We spent our 4th of July at the fascinating Wayside Inn, located in Middletown, VA. This bed and breakfast is an amazing historical treasure! We found out it is the oldest continuously running inn in the United States. It really tells a story of glorious bygone days.
We arrived in the early afternoon and were greeted warmly in the lobby. When it wasn't busy, we were taken on a tour to see everything, including any rooms that were available! All the rooms we saw are furnished with antiques and ooze with charm. There is something interesting to see in every corner! There are 22 rooms and each one has a private bath and television. There are suites and regular rooms, as well as some rooms that connect. It was fun to see how each room has it’s own character! The inn also has an attached tavern, originally built in 1742, that serves lunch, dinner, or just drinks. You can really soak up history in this place! The whole inn and property goes on and on! It would be a great spot for family reunions, weddings, bridal showers, business lunches, etc. The opportunity to have a fun event here is unlimited!
We came to Middletown to enjoy the small town holiday atmosphere and we weren’t disappointed. We sat comfortably on the long front porch enjoying their delicious strawberry shortcake as the 4th of July parade went right by the Wayside. If this wasn’t enough, there was also complimentary popcorn and a hot dog buffet with all the fixings! It was so entertaining watching the antique cars and fire trucks go by. There were horses to see, beauty queens, war veterans honored and floats that were made by local businesses, including the Wayside Inn.
Later, we had a great time watching fireworks! The Wayside has a newly renovated patio out back that is the perfect viewing spot for the impressive local fireworks. There is also comfortable seating out on the spacious patio. While we waited for the fireworks to start, we had a chance to visit with the new owners, George and Becky Reeves. These folks are wonderful! We just had the best 4th of July here! I think the enjoyment we had this trip would translate well to any occasion. I loved every minute of our visit! Thanks for keeping history alive at the Wayside Inn! We look forward to coming back!
