“Wonderful Getaway!”

My wife and I spent 4 fantastic days here. The food is excellent and the scenery is breathtaking. Picturesque mountains and one of the nation's cleanest river makes for a relaxing time. Enjoy a book by the Cowpasture River or bring your fishing gear and catch some rainbow trout. We stayed in one of the cabins. A great place and hard to beat anywhere.

Two generous, home-cooked meals each day, a gorgeous setting, tastefully decorated rooms . . . perfect place to unwind. Several different room types to choose from. Went there for birthday celebration with husband. Highly recommend.

Room Tip: Second floor of the lodge is quieter. Cabins are great if you can spend the extra $$. Don't miss...

The grounds and the accommodations were immaculate. We stayed three nights and are completely recharged. It was a perfect mountain getaway. The drive alone was beautiful. It's also close to biking (Greenbrier River Trail) and world-class golf at the Homestead. Hiking trails on the property with no one around but wildlife. The hosts were gracias and the food was like a holiday meal. Everything was homemade and fresh. We highly recommend for a peaceful, quiet getaway. We played ping-pong, pool, outdoor fire - lots of laughter together and private. We were not able to use all the amenities on property for relaxation - hammocks, canoes, kayaks, hot tub. We ran out of time. We will catch them next time!

We just returned from a night at Ft Lewis Lodge where we stayed in the John Lewis cabin. What a peaceful setting with a porch swing on the back porch and a personal view of beautiful mountains. The cabin was very well appointed with a tv and small kitchen area. Breakfast and dinner are both included in the nightly rate. The inn is quite far away from any town of any size (thus making it attractive to us) and we were grateful not to have to drive somewhere for dinner. The food is fantastic!!! The cow pasture river runs by the lodge and has a large swimming hole. We had cloud cover and were disappointed we could not see the stars without light pollution. Innkeepers are very helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: Wi-fi is available in the main lodge. Don't choose a cabin if using a wheelchair. Lodge rooms ar...

July 4th weekend was our latest stay at the Fort Lewis Lodge. As usual, there were plenty of activities to choose from: hiking, biking, swimming, spending time in the hot tub, or just lounging around. The food, especially the dinner side dishes, is always excellent. Both breakfast and dinner are included in the cost of your stay and you can generally eat your share and then some. Although John and Caryl obviously put a lot of effort and work into running the lodge, everything runs seamlessly. We have stayed at the Fort Lewis Lodge during weather ranging from cold and rainy in the spring to sizzling hot in August to the perfect weather of this past stay and have always found our stays quite relaxing.

Room Tip: Consider renting a cabin for a bit more privacy and control over your own AC temp.

I hate to write a review for Fort Lewis Lodge because I'm afraid that even more people will find this gem and ruin it for those of us who love it. However, I love Caryl and John too much not to give them the glowing 5 star review they deserve. Situated in the gorgeous mountains of Virginia near Millboro Springs, Fort Lewis Lodge is truly a place to escape life's hectic pace. My family has been vacationing at Fort Lewis for over 10 years now and it seems to just get better every time. The crystal clear Cowpasture River flows through the property and allows for decent fishing as well as a comfortable place to cool off in the summer. We stay at the Riverside House which has no cell phone service or internet and makes escaping quite easy. Have no fear though, the Lodge itself does have great cell reception as well as Wifi, and so you can still be connected to the world if you choose. Caryl's food is something we talk about throughout the year, her baked goods and fresh vegetable preparations are nothing short of amazing. John's winning smile and friendly nature have us looking forward to a dinner chat or a trip to Buck's Bar to discuss the day's events. Buck's Bar is attached to the mill and serves frosty mugs of Dominion (Virginia brewery) beer and several kinds of wine by the glass an hour before dinner service. Fort Lewis allows each member of my family to enjoy their own personal time during the day, come together to laugh and talk during dinner and then enjoy a board game or several games of ping pong to round out the evening. It's not for everyone, but if your idea of a vacation is to fish a gorgeous river, sit by the water and read a book, hike or bike the numerous trails that surround the property, or just sit on a grassy hill and soak up the sun without distraction I highly recommend Fort Lewis Lodge. If you need to be entertained constantly come to New Orleans

Room Tip: Stay at the Riverside House to be close with family and away from others (and technology).

My family and I enjoy coming to the Fort Lewis Lodge. It is obviously a labor of love for the proprietors, John and Caryl. We have been coming for a number of years and every visit there is at least one new detail that we notice. They say "little things take care of the big things". Here are a few examples that I noticed this year:

1. A few years ago a pavilion was added on the property to accommodate weddings and special events. It has a beautiful fireplace. Nights in the mountains can sometimes get a little chilly. During our visit earlier this month I noticed there were also blankets provided for guests to snuggle up in if they got too cold. Way to think outside the box!

2. Caryl and the kitchen staff produce some of the most delicious breakfasts & dinners I have
ever tasted. OK- so the muffins are always great....what made them even better one morning ? A surprise of delicious raspberry jam in the middle.

3. My nephew came with us this year. He is 19 and was worried that "there would be nothing to do". ( Tip- if you / your friends / your kids want to be connected 24/7 this is not the place for you). He loves to fish. In addition to the canoe and tire floats left by the beautiful cow pasture river there were also 3 fishing rods (new this year?). YAY! Between hiking, mountain biking (mountain bikes are provided by the lodge), fishing, star gazing, canoeing, swimming, reconnecting with family and making new friends he had plenty to do.LOL

The way the Fort Lewis Lodge is managed is the definition of "attention to detail" !

Room Tip: There is wifi in the lodge area. All the rooms are great.
