I know many people who live there. Great fishing, boating, skiing, sailing. Several state records for fish are from this lake, especially fresh water stripers. It's a hydroelectric lake with pump back system. It's the second largest lake in Virginia with over 500 miles of shoreline. The state park is a great vacation destination with cabins and camp sites available. The Blue Ridge Parkway is only a half hour away.

... and maybe in the country. I travelled here in 1986 and immediately fell in love with the fresh air, and the clean and clear water. I have owned a house on the lake since 1988 which I just substantially renovated. You can rent a house (but not mine!), stay at a hotel, motel, campground, houseboat or bed and breakfast. And if you are a pilot there is a 3000' strip close to the lake and to the state park. Great fishing, sailing, water skiing, wake boarding, tubing or just sight seeing. The state park has a beach. But most just swim from their boat or the shore by their house.

It can get a bit congested on weekends in the summer time (Memorial Day through Labor Day.) That's when you take your boat to a quiet cove and avoid the main channel. The weekdays are quiet -- except for the week of July 4. Perhaps the best time to visit is September and October Great weather and much less road and lake traffic.

Activity is just starting to pick up now after a long cold winter. The lake temp usually gets to 80 by Memorial Day and peaks in August at 85 or more.

I you are a Laker... this place cannot be beat!

Plenty to do if you like water sports and fun times. Lake is large, and it takes time to get from place to place, but it offers both great fishing and fun recreational boating. Excellent place to take a vacation with or without the children, and a very affordable and terrific place to live and/or retire.

Smith Mountain Lake is a beautifully clean, man-made lake with 500 miles of shoreline. It is wonderful for any water sport. Smith Mountain Lake Park has cabins than can be rented and several public sandy beaches. We loved it so much that we moved from Iowa and live here permanently. Here you get the best of the south and the best of the north and you will never want to leave!

Smith Mountain Lake in Central Virginia (Bedford / & Franklin Counties is an absolutely beautiful destination.
All water sports are available with numerous marinas & 2 Virginia State Parks.
Check out the SML Chamber of Commerce site for a variety of area interests & activities. (Also ...Bedford Chamber of Commerce)
Our favorite times are Fall (during Autumn Foliage display) & Spring awakening at the Lake. Summer...the lake gets busier!
Rentals overlooking the serene water are available ... we use "By The Lake Rentals", Moneta, VA.
The area is very close to the Bkue Ridge Parkway & numerous historic daytrips (D Day Memorial, Appomattox National Historical Park where the Nation was reunited after the Civil War, Booker T Washington birthplace, Poplar Forest which was Thomas Jefferson's "getaway" from his Monticello homeplace).
Numerous local wineries, potteries, galleries and orchards open their doors to visitors.
It is a beautiful area .. don't miss a trip to Smith Mountain Lake. Relax & soak in the tranquility. ♡♥♡
