If your preference goes towards old-fashioned simplicity and closeness to nature--albeit with decent and clean facilities--this is a great choice. You won't find TVs or pinball machines or much of that sort of thing, but both the tent and RV campsites are nicely spread out both along the small lake and in the immediate woods behind them. The price differential is not large, so one can take a RV site by the lake for tent camping if one wishes.
Montebello Camping and Fishing Resort is 2-3 miles off of the Blue Ridge Parkway and is close to some of the best hiking trails in the area, including Spy Rock, The Priest, and Crabtree Falls. There is a pretty well-stocked camp store, and if you're there during peach season, they have the best peaches you'll ever eat from Saunders Farm down Rt. 56.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this quiet, lovely place. We don't tend to go out of our way to meet fellow campers, but we nonetheless struck up interesting relations with a VA soil conservation expert, an AT end-to-ender, and a couple from a neighboring town in New Jersey!More
