Shopped around for a long time to find a nice place to stay in Mauritius and ended up here. Run by the fantastic Angela this is a fabulous B&B sandwiched between Tamarin beach and the river. You have views of the hills from your bedroom and dinner in town is a stroll up the beach. Highly recommended.

We very much enjoyed staying at The River House. It is well positioned close to the Tamarin Beach, which is a nice sandy safe beach. The B&B is furnished to a very high standard for the price and the proprietress is extremely helpful & knowledgable about all things Mauritian. There are canoes, bodyboards and DVDs available too... We would strongly recommend this property.

We spent two nights here Aug 2012. It was a bit tricky to get to at night, but the directions we were given before arrival got us there on the first try. Print them out and take the phone number with you just in case, even if you take a taxi. The owner was away but her lovely neighbour has taken over running everything. She was an absolute sweetheart, very open and honest, and we spent a lot of time just chatting. Our room was upgraded for free. It was large and very nice, clean and comfy with AC and a fan (AC not necessary in Aug). The view over the river is really pretty and the beach is straight down the street. There is no view of it but it is only about a 3 min walk down a quiet dirt road. I had an amaaaazing massage (BOOK ONE! You won't regret it and it was about 1/3 of the price of a massage in the 5 star hotel we later stayed at in the North). Mine was a prenatal massage but the girl REALLY knows what she is doing and was super nice to chat to as well. Breakfasts were absolutely delicious with tons of fresh fruit, breads, and home made jams plus eggs cooked to order. We had a pre-packed breakfast one night because we had an early trip to visit the dolphins. We had two awesome dinners prepared as well. I highly recommend the traditional fish curry with all of the fixings. We ate sitting out on the covered veranda overlooking the calm river. There were no mosquitoes at that time of year. Overall it was a perfect B&B experience and we wish we had stayed longer.

Room Tip: We stayed in a room adjoining the office/kitchen with a door to the inside and outside. It was nice...

A lovely little B&B located in a charming wooden riverside house, just a few minutes walk from Tamarin beach. Clean bedrooms with modern bathrooms. We did not use the small pool as we preferred exploring local beaches.

Angela is as lovely and accommodating as the other reviews say. She took the time to explain the local culture/history and offer us some day trip suggestions to best discover the island. Compared to the big hotels, the River House offers a calm, intimate, local side of Mauritius. (We also did a few days at an all-inclusive luxury hotel where we lounged all day and took advantage of the amenities. It was great to experience both sides of tourism on the Island.)

Breakfast is delicious. If you like English style breakfast, Angela's is wonderful. She even made me a vegetarian version.

Bring bug spray as you'll need it for dawn & dusk anywhere in the island.

Beyond accommodations, we recommend renting a car to visit the local beaches and sites. (We used Honey and got a reasonable rate on an automatic.)

We would recommend & return to this B&B.

Beautiful location on the river, near the beach golf course, hotel and beach house. Seclusive and calm, such a relaxed atmosphere! Rooms are a bit small, the bed specially! But the place has so much to offer! We spent one night but it seemed a week. A cosy and wonderful place to visit again

Angela runs a lovely small B&B with a very special atmosphere. The location is lovely and unusual. It's right on a river, but the Tamarin Bay beach with its amazing sunsets is just 200 meters away. The house is in a safe, quiet neighborhood of a few villas nestled between a posh hotel (with a restaurant) and a golf resort, yet only a few minutes' walk away from Tamarin. The rooms are stylish with their own verandas with a view of the river. They even sport tv-sets and dvd-players. Breakfast is excellent.

The best part is Angela herself. With a few days' warning she sorted us a wedding practically singlehanded.

That is certainly the feeling you come away with having stayed at The River House. Angela the owner, is delightful and most accommodating, nothing is too much effort for her. She went to a lot of trouble to make my birthday meal very special.
The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable, decorated in a modern contemporary style. The deck overlooking the river is splendid, with the whole atmosphere being very relaxing.
Emma, the massage practitioner, that Angela recommends, gave us one of the best massages that we have ever had, she also gave us some stretching exercises that we are continuing daily.
I would defiantly recommend the River House to couples and families. The beach is only 3 minutes walk away and is one of the best on the island. It is also used by locals that are evidently having lots of fun.
