“Peace and tranquility by the river”
Reviewed 17 September 2013

My husband and I stayed at the river house for over a week during our honeymoon in Mauritius. We decided to stay at a B&B for the middle part of our holiday with a stay at the Luxe Grande Gaube at the beginning and a few nights at The Oberoi at the end. The River House is in a beautifully tranquil setting - it was wonderful to eat breakfast on the veranda by the river each morning watching the fish jump. Angela was a fantastic host and booked an excellent swimming with dolphins trip (this is a MUST!) and she got up very early to make us breakfast before we set off! She also organised a massage for us during our stay which we had on our veranda (it was half the price of what you would pay in a hotel). We stayed in the self catering room so we had a lot of space - the bedroom and bathroom we lovely. The kitchen was limited (a microwave combi oven) but it was enough for us. Tamarin beach is a 2 minute walk and it's great for body boarding and swimming in the sea and the sunsets were fabulous! You can also walk along the beach to Tamarin where there are a few restaurants and hotels. Overall we had a wonderful stay at the river house.

We went there for my mum's birthday. The location is quite difficult to find. Angela, the owner promised to send us directions which she never did, although she was quite helpful when we called her on the way there.
She welcomed us warmly and made arrangements to accommodate our needs- we had a 6 months old baby with us.
We stayed in the suite which is lovely and luxurious, quite spacey with beautiful views over the river.
The sea is only minutes away along a private pathway.
However there is not much to do in the immediate surroundings- so you do feel quite far from civilisation. Especially at night. We went to bed at 8pm!
The breakfast in the morning is ok. My mum is vegetarian and there wasn't much choice available to her except cereals and fruits.
The service was good.
Overall quite good but not for long.

The stay in The River House was definetely the hightlight of our trip to Mauritius.

The guesthouse is so beautifully located on the calm river banks and at the same time just minutes walk from the beach, it's amazing that such corners exist somewhere in the world!

We were very satisfied with the room - spacious, well equiped and decorated with a real taste. We also enjoyed very much the breakfast.

Congratulations to Angela, the owner, who created this magical place. We will definetely come back, this time for much longer than just one night!

A totally different kind of holiday experience. 5 star service, 5 star accomodation, 45 minutes drive from the airport. Very comfortable environment, felt like having the whole place to ourselves.

The BEST thing about this entire place is probably the owner herself, Angela. Such a wonderful lady. Extremely helpful. Just send her an email on your needs and she will get them all arranged upon your arrival, eg transport, food, places u wish to visit, top restaurants around the area, a swim-with-dolphins adventure etc... We did not have to worry about a single thing, everything was in order, we just checked in and our holiday started immediately.

Rooms are spacious, just like a resort. Open up your balcony and you are just 5meters away from a calm and peaceful river. Every now and then you would see fishes jumping out of it. Interesting sight, makes you feel happy :)

A very UNIQUE experience. We started missing it the minute we left, would definately return in near future. In fact we liked this place more than the other 5 star beach resort we went to after checking out from here.

Everyone who is planning to visit Mauritius - this is a MUST-GO place. You would not regret it.

Such a special place, felt like our secret getaway. At the end of a private road, the river house looks over a small river lagoon, with jumping fish, swooping herons and lots of other wildlife. Three minutes walk down a lovely track is a virtually private beach, with proper waves (nice change from the lagoon -- tho lagoon beaches are a walk or short drive away). At one end a walk through woods to lagoon beaches, at the other a village with surf shops and small restaurants/snack takeaways (delicious Indian lunch for two = $1.50). Canoe to go out on the lagoon and up two rivers, spectacular particularly near sunset. Short drive to lots of fascinating/beautiful places like Black River park (where you can hike the highest peak on the Island), le Morne, deserted beaches along the southern side of the Island, wild cliffs at Gris Gris (and cheap lobster at Rosy's). Angela couldn't be kinder, full of advice, rustling up snacks when we arrived too late for dinner, arranging wonderful Dolphin watching and even getting up before 6 so we could have a full (delicious) breakfast before setting out. Feels like you are seeing a side of Mauritius that is usually saved for the luckiest locals. Would recommend staying with a hire car though, particularly if not on half/full board, to take advantage of all the sights, restaurants etc nearby.

Room Tip: All but the smallest rooms have verandas you can sit on to look at the river and mountain, lovely

The River House is situated on the bank of the Rivière du Rempart River and “close” to the sea. From the house, you can see the lights of the hotel Tamarin during the evening. This is to say that it is very easy to reach the “mainland” after an 8-minute walk along the beach. Either Angela or Julie will give you precise instructions.
Words that come to mind when I think of River House are peace and quiet.
Breakfast: I can only endorse what the other reviews have already mentioned. Make sure you do not miss the banana jam!
During the day, sitting on your private veranda, you will see a couple of fisher boats on the river and if you look very carefully, you will notice some deer on the other bank of the river. If you want to have a closer look, Angela will lend you either a kayak or a canoe. The fish jumping out of the river is an activity that takes place during the day and in the night as well. Do fish see in the night?
Food: In the village, there is a choice of places where you can eat during the day but the choice is restricted on a Monday night. There is a Chinese restaurant and a Pizzeria and I was informed that a little café on the way to the main road starts serving food in the evening as from November.
A place not to miss is a delightful restaurant with the name of Ti Ruben. Ask a local for directions ... from the beach road, turn right on the main road, cross over to the side of the “salt baths” and carry on until you see a massive tree on your left. Then turn left and after about 200 meters, you will see the lights of the restaurant. You can sit inside or outside. The food may take some time to arrive depending on what you have ordered. Mauritian specialties at around Rs 250
You can also eat at the hotel Tamarin even if you are not a guest.
If you are stopping at the River House, please book well in advance and ask Angela on how to get there. She promised me that she will put a name board and more lights at the entrance!

My sister and I wrapped up a magical first trip to the island by spending our last 3 nights in this charming guest house. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised at how the high expectations built up by the descriptions posted here on Trip Advisor - of the rooms, the meals as well as of Angela herself - were met if not exceeded. While I enjoyed the view of the river from the balcony, what especially charmed me was how one, upon close listening, could hear the faint roar of the waves of Tamarin Beach from the same balcony. Thanks, Angela, for your hospitality!
