“Wonderful apartment!”
Reviewed 13 March 2014 for a stay in February 2014

There is everything you need for a good vacation. The apartment is well located and we liked the cleanliness of it. The master bedroom was spacious and very nice. The kitchen was well equipped and the grill was excellent to have! The garden around the pool area was nice and clean. We thank Agnes for spectacular service!

“Well worth staying here - we had a great time in Mauritius”

We have just completed 6 nights at Olana. Thank you to Agnes and Ken for a lovely relaxing time.
Having spent several weeks visiting family and rushing around South Africa, it was really good to stay at Olana on the way back to Australia.

The highlights of our stay:
- spacious apartment where we had more than enough room for 5 of us, and our teenage children could enjoy it as much as we did.
- being able to lie on the pool loungers first thing in the morning and watch the sun light up the mountains opposite the bay.
- the infinity pool that faces onto the beach, lined with palm trees,
-crisp clean white cotton sheets every 2 days,
- walking to dinner at the Bay Hotel and watching the sunset.
- the colours of the sunset from the edge of the property. Loved that i could relax, the boys could fish, the girls could swim - each doing our own thing, together.
- snorkelling at Le Morne beach and seeing the bright fish in the corals, all within 100 m of the pristine beach.

I think this apartment is equally suited to young and old, those wanting to relax and those wanting an active holiday. Boats are prepared to pick you up from your front yard.

Thank you to Fidou for making us a Mauritian Curry for dinner. (Hint for future guests, agree on the time that it will take and a price, so you know what you're going to be paying)

Pastries from Food Lovers (2 minute drive) were very much enjoyed - from Croissants at 18 Rupee each (even chocolate Croissants) to the Bagettes at 5 MUR - all nice and fresh and hot from the oven.

In terms of food, everything you need is very close by. We opted not to have a car for the first day, and it was still easy to get what we needed. We did enjoy having a car from then on.

Best beaches nearby: Flic en Flac and Le Morne. Both clear water and excellent snorkelling.

We also organised our car rental with Sayaad from Pinguin Car hire, I would highly recommend their services too. They collected us from the airport in a van, delivered a car to us at our accomodation and ensured our safe return to the airport. Pinguin Car hire was also very accomodating when we extended the car hire for another day. Very pleasant to deal with and I believe the cheapest car hire on the island.

Last but not least, we very much appreciated Agnes' flexibility around late checkout. Our flight was only at night, so we only left the apartment at 5:30pm. Some venues would charge an extra day or insist on 10am checkout, but they were quite happy for us to continue using the apartment till we needed to leave. A real bonus when you have 6 large bags for the family!

Kitchen fully equipped. Pictures very accurate. I would definitely recommend this if you would like to do self-catering.

Liked best: Sunsets from the edge of the property.
Liked least: Murky water in the near vicinity, so snorkelling wasn't really an option without driving to another beach.

“Excellent Apartment and Owners”

We spent a week at one of the apartments with family including a 3-year old. A very well built and furnished apartment with a great pool area that included a baby pool. The facilities were first rate and the apartment is very well maintained.

The owner, Agnes, was great and available at the end of the phone to arrange interesting trips including boat rentals and recommended sight seeing.

If you are visiting Mauritius then would recommend considering this apartment.

“Great apartment in quiet, scenic location.”

The apartment is in a quiet location and has everything needed for 6 people including maid, gardener and security. The owner is very helpful and full of useful information. There are good local restaurants in the shopping centre across the road. Casela park is a few kilometres away and has lots of attractions including walking with lions and Segways, but be aware you have to pay to enter the park each time you go, so fit all your activities into one visit.
There are good local beaches and dolphin spotting near by. Lots of other attractions are available within an hours drive. Many people use local taxis to get to these attractions and they are reasonably priced. As there were 5 of us we chose to hire a car. Driving in Mauritius is not a speedy affair so give yourself plenty of time if your are driving. If you are hiring a car plan to land and get to your destination in daylight as road signs are not great.
We had a great time including a helicopter ride. The only thing we found that was poor value for money was the submarine trip.

“A perfect vacation”
Reviewed 28 August 2013 for a stay in August 2013

My extended family (five adults and a five-year-old) stayed at Olana for ten days around mid August. The apartment complex is located off the main road in a quiet bay. Although all the beaches in Mauritius are public, the location of Olana gives you the sense that the stretch of beach in the backyard belongs only to you.

Every single detail at Olana was taken good care of by Agnes and Ken. For example, the property was regularly sprayed so that there was essentially no mosquitos in and around Olana. Hedley, the friendly and responsible security guard, patrolled Olana and several other properties in this quiet and peaceful neighborhood. In fact, staying at Olana, you rarely see strangers, even in the backyard. Fidou, our maid, came in every day Mon-Fri to thoroughly clean the apartment. Because of her, we always had clean sheets and floors etc. We also learned how to work several appliances from her! In addition, the swimming pool, the deck and the yard (including the stretch of sandy shore adjacent the pool) were also cleaned once or twice a week. (I tend to be picky about cleanliness, but it's no exaggeration to say that Olana is cleaner than my own apartment!)

The apt we stayed in is thoughtfully designed, offering convenience and aesthetics at the same time. Each of the three bedrooms has its own spacious bathroom (toilet and shower; the master bathroom is further equipped with a deep bath, which I enjoyed immensely). There is also a guest bathroom (toilet only) next to the dining/living room. The decor is modern and, fortunately, not postmodern; I like the art works around the apt very much.

The spacious kitchen has all the modern appliances and necessary cookware, which made cooking fun. As a result, we cooked most of our meals, instead of dining out. The apt also has a >30 sq m veranda, well furnished and facing the yard, the pool, the calm bay and the mountains in the distance. My family spent quite a lot of time there, having breakfast, chatting, watching others playing in and around the pool, and even taking naps.

Olana's location cannot be better. It seems that everything is within walking distance: a post office (1 min), a business complex (private clinics, Barclays office; 1-2 min), a shopping complex Ruisseau Creole (across the main road; 1-2 min), the London Supermarket with a pharmacy and a restaurant next door (10 min), a community hospital (10-15 min), and even the port where the tourist catamarans leave (15-20 min). (Of course, Mauritious could do a better job making the roads more friendly to pedestrians…)

And where else could we find better hosts than Agnes and Ken? They not only came to the apt everyday to make sure that all our needs were met, but also gave us very detailed info on where to go and what to do. Because of them, we took the unforgettable trip to Blue Bay (on the east coast) for the glass-bottom boat. Agnes also arranged for us another even more impressive day on a catamaran sailing up and down the west coast, looking for dolphins (and we did see them!), swimming and snorkeling in the ocean, and relaxing on the beautiful small island Ile aux Bénitiers.

After learning that I was intrigued by scuba diving but didn't feel entirely comfortable in open water, Ken, who is in fact a diving master, gave me a private diving lesson in the swimming pool, with his endless patience! I just couldn't believe that I actually got into the water with all the gears on; it had been a dream (mixed with fear) for me for several years! Unfortunately it was near the end of my trip and the weather and the ocean turned rough the following day. The trial dive, which Ken and Agnes had arranged for me, had to be called off. But it only means that I need to go back there soon!

On our departure day, our flight was in the evening. Agnes kindly allowed us to stay in the apt beyond the check-out time, so that my parents could take a nap there. Ken did us a big favor again by driving us in the morning to the Gorges (20 min drive) to see the waterfalls, the seven colored earths and even the tortoises. Not only the views were fascinating, but I felt very lucky to have Ken behind the wheel. The drive up and down the mountains may be done by a tourist in a rented car, but with the narrow and winding roads, I wouldn't have stayed calm the whole time (in fact, I'm not sure that we could even find the way if we went ourselves)!

Agnes introduced us to Kishan, an outstanding taxi driver. I hadn't expected the difficulty in finding taxis on the spot in Mauritius. Nearly all the taxi services asked for at least a two-hour advance notice. Kishan was more flexible with time and always asked for a reasonable price.

Last but not least, we had plans to move to a villa on the east coast for our last few days in Mauritius. Kishan drove us all the way there. Unfortunately, the conditions at that villa were not good; no hot water or the internet. We missed Olana and decided to move back the next day. Again, Kishan drove across the island to pick us up. It was great to see Agnes and Ken again. It felt like coming back home!
