The service at the restaurant was just perfect, Pox,the waiter was very kind and useful. I highly recommend you this hotel. Thank you so much for making our day Tamarin Hotel Team.

The hotel is located across the street from the public beach. I loved my stay there. Small hotel with a nice atmosphere. The rooms are filled with vibrant colours. The food was nice. Oh and for an additional charge you get to go on a speedboat to watch the dolphins in the lagoon. Price is value for money.

Having read about the Tamarin we decided to visit and have a sundowner or three in the outdoor bar (where the musicians play). It's quite an experience if you like lots and lots of primary colours; walls, chairs, pretty well everything is bright and buzzy, even the cocktails match the decor! Do go and see it, plus the view from the beach of the Mauritius Matterhorn, Rempart.

We liked this place. Yes, it's a bit rough around the edges, but it's good value, unpretentious, friendly and we enjoyed our stay. The 70's decor is great, there is live jazz in the evenings, and dolphin trips leave from outside the front entrance, which is directly opposite tamarin beach. The food isn't brilliant but the drinks are good value and it has a relaxed atmosphere in the evening at dinner. We stayed here following a night at a 5* in morne and although it was a completely different experience we felt happier at tamarin, which had a better atmosphere and was a fraction of the price.

I stayed here for three nights on business. The hotel was excellent and had very comfortable beds and the staff friendly. The food was also extremely good. The location is quite and very close to the beach.

We didn't stay here, but used it repeatedly for lunch during our holiday.
Very quickly the staff started to recognise us, and made us feel very welcome. They took pride in remembering what we liked to drink each day. By the end of our stay, we were welcomed like old friends; their friendliness really encouraged us to keep going there.
We had lunch in the hotel many times, the menu is small but meals were tasty and reasonably priced, although not absolute top quality (but in Mauritius that standard is extremely high).
Unlike many newer hotels, it doesn't intrude onto the beach, so doesn't spoil the beach for locals or visitors.
The restaurant is in a pleasant garden, and birds (sparrows, bulbuls, and the splendid red fody) are frequent visitors. All adds to the pleasure. On a couple of occasions flies bothered us, but they must have sprayed or something, the problem went away.
In the evenings they only do buffet meals, which we don't like. In addition, the music played in not to my taste, so we never ate here in the evening.

We just stayed there for 4 days in mid-October. Tamarin is an excellent spot to stay if you really want a quiet corner of the island. Its primarily an affluent upper-middle class residential area, and there are no neighbouring hotels, so you probably will not see a lot of tourists walking around. This "local" atmosphere also means that you won't get pestered by merchants trying to pawn of their wares. In fact, the beach out front is a popular local beach, so its very lively on the weekends. The sand, while very fine, is a bit grey, as its at the mouth of a river.

There are a couple of very modern shopping malls just south of there, which contain a varied mixture of food, fashion and nik-naks. Be forewarned that you can find a lot of fake stuff in these stores. While it is absolutely true that there are numerous locally made "luxury brands" (ie - Karl Kaiser, Hugo Boss, Abercrombie & Fitch), almost EVERYTHING else is fake and made in China. In particular, there seems to be a proliferation of fake Paul Smith attire and bags on the island. One careful look at the design, material and the craftsmanship will make you almost laugh at how bad they are.

The rooms can only be described as cheerful, quaint and cute. Try to get a room on the ground level in front of the pool, as they have a very nice front "patio" with lounge chairs. The hotel caters to a lot of the French, so the staff do not really speak English. Its half board catering, so you get breakfast and dinner buffets. Both are exceptional, with plenty of options. For breakfast, there is your usual assortment of pastries, cereal, yogurt and fruit plus a station from which to get your made to order eggs and bacon. For dinner, there is a specific theme every night of the week, ranging from Mauritian creole, Indian, Chinese and European.

At night, you can really soak in the tropical atmosphere while having drinks at the sandy bar area. The entertainment is renowned across the island for its exceptionally good jazz band. In fact, Cyril Michel, the owner of the hotel plays the sax.

If you plan to stay here, I would recommend also staying up north or out east for a few days as well. This will give you a good overall feel of what Mauritius has to offer, as each region have their own unique character.

Room Tip: Ground level, by the pool
