“Horrible hotel if cheap and a roof over your head is all you need”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 March 2014

A very low range hotel that is recommended in the Morocco guidebooks by Lonely Planet and Rough Guides.

The price is 60dh per person so 120dh for a double.

The room (room 8) consisted of a double bed and a mini table. Extra comforters are provided and they were needed (windows were open and it is an exterior wall so it was very cold). To give you an idea, for mid march I slept under 3 blankets while wearing jogging pants, thick socks, a long sleeve thermal and a sweater.

Our room was on the third floor with a steep and narrow staircase so be prepared to climb stairs. Our room was on the same floor as the toilet which is not a flush toilet it is one with the hole in the ground. The sink was located just outside our door.

Also above all the room doors (and the wc) there are openings so ALL noises and voices are heard as well as additional light comes in.

There was parking available on the street outside.

There is no wifi at this hotel. We did not have time to compare to other hotels in the area but in comparison to the 50dh/person we paid in Marrakech this is much less quality.

Also word will get around that you are staying there... The carpet shop owner beside the hotel saw us in the restaurant and started the promotion for his shop and asking us to come visit for free the next morning.. We left early enough to not be bothered by him any longer.

Been there on the way to Merzouga, we reserved a room to find out, arrived in the evening, that someone else took our place!
The second options was dirty, without toilette and bedsheets, while the staff mood was sort of "Take it or leave it"!!!
Obviously we left..
Be aware of a small shop next to the Hotel, the guy will drive you crazy to sell you a carpet!!!!!c

This hotel is very ordinary and not recommended. The room was tiny and outdated, the TV had only one blurry channel and the place was filthy. The wall decorations held a thick layer of dust and the bathroom was creepy. The pink toilet paper even made the water... pink. The breakfast, included in the not-so-cheap price was instant coffee or Lipton tea and a roll of bread with no jam or butter. It was served in what seemed to be the owner's living quarters.

The strange thing is that this hotel is mentioned in several guides, with positive reviews. I even did a double-take to make sure we were at the same address the Lonely Planet gave...

Midelt is a very useful stop-off between Merzouga and Fes, and we spent one night at the Atlas Hotel in April 2007. Both the Rough Guide and Lonely Planet described it as being friendly, Berber run and offering outstanding cleanliness and value. I can't really argue about this (our room was 6 Euros) - however what they didn't mention was the interesting nature of the "hospitality"

After choosing our room, we were invited for a cup of tea. We were taken three doors up the street by the friendly and welcoming host, and shown into a room with a few carpets, and a visitor's book. The book should have given us a clue what was about to happen, as other people made similar comments to what was about to happen to us.

Friendly host introduced us to his cousin, then disappeared. Friendly-at-first Cousin then asked if we wanted to see " a short presentation" given by his uncle. Perhaps we should have declined, but we had enjoyed wonderful hospitality from everywhere else we stayed in Morocco, so we agreed.

Uncle appears, and before we know it, 20 or 30 carpets are on the floor and we are invited to indicate the ones we like. We don't really need a carpet, but know this is a game that needs to be played. There is one Berber rug we quite like, and eventually Cousin gives us his opening price - £425 ($850)!

We start bargaining, and his mood changes dramatically. We decide £30 would be a fair price so offer £10. Ho looks at me with contempt, not the mock shock/horror we've seen on the face of every other trader we've bargained with, but with a sneer. He starts talking to his assistant in Arabic, with the occasional laugh in our direction.

We just want out now, and after offering £30, Cousin throws his hands in the air, give the rug to his assistant for wrapping and storms out without a word. We pay, and assistant vanishes too. We are left to find our own way out. So much for hospitality. We have our rug, he has a fair price, but any pretence of welcome or friendship is long gone.

Perhaps we were fools - we could have declined the hospitality, or we could have walked out when we realised what was going on. However, we were their guests and would have found this difficult.

The room was OK, if a little cold at night. The water in the shower was just a little above cold. So if you are looking for somewhere cheap and clean in Midelt then stay here, but be prepared to decline the "hospitality"!
