“AUM NAMAH SHIVAYA”
Reviewed 24 April 2014

A very special Ashram at the Ganga. Peaceful and you can feel the power of both "The Ganga & The Shiva" .... Wow ... Wanted to sit here for a longer time than I had. It is absolutely worth of it to visit that place. Please have the time to enjoy the silence and feel the precence of Shiva in the Cave.

“Interesting Cave”
Reviewed 22 April 2014

This place has one twenty feet or so deep cave where Sage Vashistha did penance centuries back. Nice picnic spot - provided you are into quiet, eco friendly picnic and not leaving garbage behind :)

“An ancient cave”
Reviewed 15 April 2014

This ancient cave was where Sage Vashishta meditated in the millennia gone by ! It is well preserved even now and one can meditate quietly inside.

It is about 25 km from Rishikesh on the Badrinath road. We drove mostly along the River Ganga and reached the entrance of Swami Puroshottamanand Ashram. For the ashram and Vashishta cave (Gufa or Guha) there were steps which took us down, almost to the river side. A few people were there but fortunately there was no crowd, and we could meditate inside the cave in peace.

Swami Chaitanyanand who is the Head of the ashram now, told us about the difficulties they had last year when the flood waters damaged many of the roads, especially the Kedarnath road. The ashram and Gufa were covered with sand several feet high, when the flood waters receded, and a huge expense was incurred to remove the sand and debris, rebuild and repaint the affected buildings. Their efforts have paid off and now the ashram and cave are again looking good, in this scenic location by the Ganga River bank.

A historic place worth visiting.

“Profound”
Reviewed 4 April 2014

This was once a great cave (guha pronounced gufa) for meditation but I am told that because people went in and did not want to come out, the government cut off the deeper rooms to provide for more superficial meditations and more returning tourists. So be it. Also a magnificent spot on the River Ganga. When we were there there was a yagya in progress.

“Mid week is better than weekend to spend more time in cave”
Reviewed 8 March 2014

Our trip to this cave was unfortunately rushed, though well worth the trip and plan to return mid week next trip and stay at the accompanying ashram for a small and reasonable fee....very quiet place and right on the Ganga with lovely beach and nice temple...not too many person there when we visited.

Inside the cave was pitch black and could only he viewed with the help of torch or candle light...due to driver and another with us we rushed through...plan to take time and meditate in this holy cave.

There is good great info on the web about the Gufa so I would not repeat this info here...if you are spending any time at all in Rishikesh this is a great over night excursion or day trip. Very well known in certain circles...also the Neelenkant trek or taxi visit is well worth the time.

Best wishes
