Aureum Resort at Governor's House
Reviewed 26 May 2012

Huge elegant bungalows set in large grounds. One of the biggest hotel rooms I have ever stayed in. Nice furniture but a very hard bed. Didn't eat at the restaurant but the breakfast was just OK.

Room Tip: Get a bungalow away from the main road which runs in front of the hotel.

The resorts are great~! Specially the Governor house at hill top~ a great refurbish and classic historical house. Recommend visit to Pyin Oo Lwin garden. Great scene~!
Hotel staff are friendly and speak well English. Serving great dish of local and western food. It's enjoyable to have a cup of wine, with fire stove outdoor and enjoying the chilling fresh air in the evening.
Don't forget to visit the heaven like waterfall~!

Room Tip: If affordable, take the Governor house at hill top. You will get total different feeling of staying...

We stayed one night in Room 202 -a bungalow in the grounds of the Hotel. The room was spacious, comfortable and well furnished (although ours had a knee-wrecking bed end, a loose toilet and a death trap step that ran right across the bedroom to catch the unwary night traveller). Dinner, in a pleasant and well laid out dining room, was disappointing. A passable starter preceded mushroom soup that avoided the taste of mushroom. The main course (which arrived on a stone-cold plate) consisted of cold, almost raw potatoes and vegetables surrounding tepid, going on cold, chicken slices. Complaints received little reaction. When the waiter asked, "Have you finished", my reply had to be, "I couldn't even start it". This was a dire course. Deaaert was a standard plate of fruit. The buffet breakfast was reasonable enough.
Before leaving, we visited what used to be the Governor's House which is now part of the hotel. It’s a renovated old colonial property with a lovely wooden staircase and elegant panelling, and many original fittings and fixtures. There are interesting pictures and photos of the place’s glory days and an unusual feature is the swimming pool which is part of the Dining Room! From the balcony extending round the house at bedroom level are expansive views over the forests and hills. The Governor must have felt like God up here!
To summarise, accommodation and the staff are well up to scratch but the food was routine going on poor. It may be that the chef was out of his comfort zone with non-Asian dishes - if so, it's a lame excuse. But if he could, or does, markedly improve the standard of our (admittedly only one) dinner, then I'd have no hesitation in staying here again.

Room Tip: Consider how far your room is from the Reception Block & Dining Room

I spent four nights in this property, and was very satisfied with the rooms. Even though I took the cheapest room, it was still in a semi-detached bungalow, and of very generous size. It featured a large bathroom with bath and separate rain shower, and the room itself was very comfortable, with a sofa and winged arm chair, and plenty of windows. It was a lovely room to spend time reading and relaxing in; not merely somewhere to just sleep. Everything was clean, comfortable, and quite modern (this is a newly built property, not colonial-era). The location was good - about 10mins walk from the centre of town, where there is a nice cafe and bakery (The Golden Triangle). The breakfast was pretty poor, and after the first morning I skipped it and instead went to the aforementioned bakery in town. But staff were nice, and the room-service meals I had were adequate. As 'Coylum' mentioned in an earlier review, the lobby needs some renovating - it's cold and unwelcoming, quite unlike the rooms. Rooms have heaters and plenty of hotwater, which is necessary as it gets cold.

Room Tip: The cheaper rooms ironically have the best location - set back from the road, which can be noisey. T...

The actual Governor's residence is a replica of the original that was destroyed in the war. They have a few dressed figures in the costumes of the original protagonists in the entrance hall. There are 5 rooms in that building, which a very pricey.

The rest of the hotel, where we stayed, is semi-detached chalets of generous size. Big bathrooms and elevated beds. We actual needed to have the highly efficient air-conditioning unit on heat! It worked really well.

The owner (Who owns Yangon airways), should hire a decent interior designer for the reception and restaurant area. Austere colonial club could be a description of the dining room. It could really do with much better lighting and a few good paintings, which are really easy to find in Myanmar.

The restaurant people are great, but the food is average.
