Aureum Resort at Governor's House
Reviewed 23 March 2013

We had a very short stay at this hotel, arriving early evening and leaving the next morning. The grounds are well maintained. The bungalow was spacious but poorly designed with the bed on a platform with steps down leading to the bathroom - dangerous for anyone with mobility problems and for anyone else needing to use the facilities during the night who was not very cautious. There was a back veranda which did not have any seating and no view and the front veranda looked out over the very pretty grounds and other bungalows, although there was only one comfortable chair provided outside for a double room! The breakfast was ok, but more limited than all the other hotels we stayed at and there was no bar facilities open when we returned from dinner before 10pm! We walked up to the old govenors house in the morning which is being restored which is interesting and the gardens surrounding it were worth a look. We didnt come across many staff during our stay so unable to comment on them, but the porters were helpful with the bags although this took some time as the two golf carts normally used to transport luggage were both broken. We took a horse carriage to the local botanical gardens which are relatively close and definately worth a visit - beautifully maintained and huge - allow plenty of time.

We found the restoration of the main building to be really very special although the indoor pool looked as if it needed a clean. We had a bungalow in the grounds which was very spacious although the internal step up to sleeping area and down to bathroom could catch out the unwary. But some work was being done near to reception and there was lots of banging and noise of electrical tools. We enquired at reception when this would be finished and were told 7pm - at 9pm when it was still happening I had to complain to reception which did stop it. As the resort seemed very empty we couldn't understand why we hadn't been put further away?

The staff were very friendly but at dinner there were only two other couples eating and we just felt the place was coasting backwards. It needs an international on site manager with experience of working elsewhere to give the whole place a shake and inject some vibrancy.

There were a number of people at breakfast but the choice was very limited and looking around it seemed as if the main client group was Myanmar citizens with money.

As our luggage was carried out of the door staff were heading in to strip the bed etc!

I would seriously consider if this meets your needs.

Room Tip: Not near reception

The bungalow I stayed in was very pleasant, but this hotel is quite a long way away from the botanic gardens, so if you are coming here to see the gardens there are better options to choose from which are much nearer. Also the swimming pools on the site are reserved for guests of the main residence, not guests in the bungalows, which is a real pity. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Food OK but not many diners in the evening.

Whilst staying at the hotel Pyin Oo Lwin we visited the Aureum for lunch and brunch. This was based on an excellent experience at the Aureum Bagan. The food was reasonably good on the two occasions that we visited - on each we were the only diners! The wine was also maderised on both occasions, though if you imagine it's port rather than wine it's perfectly drinkable! Whilst the main house was 'locked away' the bungalows looked good value at US$ 75 versus the US$ 125 asked for at our hotel nearby. Would be tempted to stay here on our next visit. It's also only a 10 minute walk into town.

We were given a large bungalow with plenty of potential and a good bathroom. The hotel seemed fairly empty and although our accommodation had all the inclusions we needed, it lacked character. We stayed only one night, so hard to judge. We had an O.K. dinner in the near empty restaurant and the hotel kindly packed us a very acceptable picnic breakfast for our early morning start.

The hotel is well situated in nice grounds. Our room was large and very stylish. As we were there for only one night,we did not have time to appreciated the comfortable looking seating area. We did find the room cold and the high single beds were very hard. The beds were on a raised platform so getting to the bathroom involved two steep steps. Not easy in the night! The bathroom was quite luxuriously appointed but the smelliest bathroom we experienced out of 6 hotels in Burma.
It was also hard to find appropriate electric sockets for the kettle and other equipment.
The dinner and breakfast was average but drinks were expensive.
The Botanical gardens are beautiful and if we had had the time, we could easily have spent a whole day there. We didn't like the caves with all the Buddhas.

Rooms are very nice and very peaceful resort

The town isn't too far but down an unlit main road and with kids felt a bit dodgy. Despite seeming to have twice the number of staff to guests " the guy who drives the bus " had gone home so walking was the only option

Ate there once and only once. The staff try their best but you felt a bit crowded and our steaks were stone cold!

Myanmar is still learning about tourism so need to consider this. Pyin and Aureaum are nice but 1 or 2 days is plenty then things start to get a little boring
