“Beautiful grounds and nice amenities”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 January 2014 via mobile

I enjoyed my one night stay here. It's conveniently located by main road. It doesn't have best view of scenery or anything. The service staff were friendly and accommodating, even if they are not right on the dot with everything, but you have to give them kudos for trying to be responsive. It's not this hotel per se but I think just in general all of Myanmar staffing just needs some help in learning customer service and efficiency in organizational skills. It's what one expects in a country that is just opening up to developing world. So from that perspective, I'm amazed at how beautiful the resort is and nice roomy space, clean and quiet. Breakfast buffet was great. Dinner was okay but the server was attentive. Wi Fi is sooooooo slow but again, that's anywhere in Myanmar.

Well I have mixed thoughts after this stay. This place is hardly royal and there is certainly no hint of any “resort”. We made a booking via Agoda, (no problems with Agoda I use them a lot). We booked the ‘deluxe’ room not the ‘superior’ room as advertised on the booking page. The room description and photos clearly displayed a rather good room with 3 beds. We chose the 3 bed option and paid. On arrival there was one person who walked out to the taxi and gestured that the driver leave the bags in the taxi, we explained who we were and that we had booked via Agoda. It was here the chaos started, they had not looked at their e mail, and hence were not prepared for our arrival. Their english was so poor, and we were met by a staff member with numerous keys who escorted us minus the luggage to a room some distance from reception, whilst we were still explaining we had a booking. It was a superior room that we were shown, she still had no understanding we had a booking and the booking was according to Agoda a deluxe with 3 beds. We went back to reception, hot and flustered. We explained again about the booking and the booking details were shown and 3 girls still could not understand or sort it out. A welcome drink was advertised and after a long hot taxi drive we had to ask could we have a drink while they sorted things out. We were still not offered what we paid for and eventually a man arrives (manager???) he spoke some english and told us that the room with the 3 beds was their “family” room and we had to pay extra for it. We showed him the booking and photos supplied by the hotel to Agoda and he eventually agreed to give us the room we had booked. The superior rooms were rather dismal and small and not worth the money. The room we had booked was completely different to the superior room. The hotel has two types of rooms and clearly there must be mix ups with everyones bookings. IF the hotel provide photos to Agoda and a room description to match then they need to honor these bookings, not tell people that they have to pay extra for this room. IF the room is called a ‘family’ room then advertise it as ‘family’ on Agoda, not a ‘deluxe’.
There was still confusion at reception, no information about breakfast, the local area, no maps, no offers to help with transport or anything else. We were shown to our room which was finally the one pictured. It was upstairs, very large, much better appointed than the superior, and yes it included the 3 beds we had paid for. There is a reasonable sized patio but when it rained it leaked, making the floor tiles like an ice skating rink and unusable. The shampoo and shower gel was empty but there was a fridge, mini bar, kettle and tea & coffee. Towels were white, very small though. The beds were hard and linen somewhat worn. Hard beds seem to be rather ‘normal’ for Myanmar. However these beds were the worst we had experienced. In fact we have never slept in beds so hard. Getting a good nights sleep was impossible due to the discomfort. No matter which way you moved you felt terribly uncomfortable. Perhaps the other rooms have better mattresses???....
Grounds were kept reasonably nice but there is no pool which a resort has, there was a small room with gym equipment but also mosquitoes. The spa was closed, no sign of anyone in there.
We attempted to eat lunch at the restaurant and when we walked in the staff walked off. Eventually one came over with a menu and we nodded and said that we wanted to order and he walked away with the menu and never came back. Still we waited and it was obvious we were not going to be offered any food so we walked to a nearby place to eat. I went to reception to collect our passports that were supposed to be delivered to our room and were not, when I went in the girl was looking at herself in a mirror.
There is very little customer service in this place, except for some assistance at breakfast. It is the quiet season but that is no excuse and with so many staff lurking around surely someone should speak and offer some assistance. The gardener seemed to be doing some work. The fountains in the gardens were not operating either until just as we were checking out. Breakfast was just average. There were some baskets containing, bread, cake, cold spring rolls, juice, a small amount of paw paw and melon, tea & coffee. We were offered rice or noodles with an egg. The rice was just warm. The second morning there was a small buffet set up.
The power went out which you know happens in Myanmar, but we had to ring up reception after some time and ask them to please use the generator. It seems that they were happy not to use it and wait until the power finally came back on.
We have stayed at a few hotels in Myanmar and numerous others in various parts of the world but this would have to go down as the lowest standard of service.... completely lacking.
I wonder if it is any better in the busier season?
IF the hotel has given wrong room descriptions to Agoda then they need to work this out, they also need to check e mails and prepare rooms for their guests. This hotel was not cheap, in general rooms in Myanmar are over priced for what you get.
The hotel provide the following information on Agoda.

“At Royal Reward Resort, the excellent service and superior facilities make for an unforgettable stay. Family room, restaurant, coffee shop, room service, tours are just a few of the facilities that set Royal Reward Resort apart from other hotels in the city.
Step into one of 23 inviting rooms and escape the stresses of the day with a wide range of amenities such as satellite/cable TV, internet access – wireless, extra long beds (> 2 meters), in room safe, daily newspaper. Throughout the day you can enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of the massage, garden, fitness center. Enjoy unparalleled services and a truly prestigious address at the Royal Reward Resort.”

We did not have an in room safe, and no offer of a security box at reception, and no newspaper. It is such a shame as this hotel has the potential to do much better.

Room Tip: Book with Agoda and show them photos on the Agoda web site if necessary to ensure you get the room y...

I booked this for my last 2 nights in Myanmar as was having trouble finding a decent price in Mandalay and thought I might want some peach and quiet and better air by that time anyway.

Yes the air is better up in Pyin Oo Lwin and yes its much quieter. If your a walker you can walk south to the Botanical Gardens (admission 5000 Kyat foreigner, 1000 Myanmar. You can also veer left and walk to the Shan Market. Botannical is about 35 min, market about 20 min.

The room was large and there were probably only about 4 or 5 units occupied when I was there so it was very quiet. Staff helpful--as I found they are everywhere in Myanmar. Room
had microwave and everything we needed. I paid $90 for two on Agoda. More than I would normally pay but I wanted to assure a decent place at end of trip.

The breakfast doesn't start until 7am. Its fair. You can walk out and turn right and one minute away is Woodland Restaurant. Its a modern establishment with a large menu and music some nights. Keep walking another minute a Chinese place on the corner. Keep walking south and then make a right to Feel Lakefront Restaurant. BEWARE-there are 2 FEEL restaurants in town.
You can easily get confused. One on a lake front and one not. The one not you probably will pass on the way to this hotel. It is about 1000 feet NW of the one on the lake but on different roads with different access and it appeared to me from being at both they are not connected
but it might just be a language problem. Both are large restaurants. Both say FEEL outfront.

As with every hotel in Myanmar currently, the internet never works all the time and power outages do occur.

My room had a floor above it, yet many were individual cottage type rooms. I don't know the pricing, as I chose on Agoda and sometimes you just take a category! I would stay here again.

I decided to walk the botanical gardens. The price offered for the horse cart was too high and really most everything there is walkable. The walk to the Botanical might be too much for some though. Its at least a mile.

I ordered a special car/taxi from hotel front desk to the airport. . Paid them the cash first, they found the driver for the next day. Driver arrived on time, got us to Mandalay airport on time.
Car was rather old and beat up, but it worked out fine.

Room Tip: Try for your own cottage type room. If people are above the ones with a floor above it can get noisy...

Picturesque hotel set in a beautiful town of MayMyo ( Pyin Oo Lwin). Friendly and helpful staff. Great value for money. My family and I enjoyed the scenic view from the balcony of our room on top floor of one of the individually built bungalows. Breakfast is of medium standard and often some items ran out if you are late. Don't try laundry service. It's sub-standard. Overall, we had a great time.
