“Awesome private beach. Decent bungalow. Good price.”
Reviewed 18 February 2013

We started our stay on Ko Chang in a bungalow far away from the beach. It was decent, but we decided to rent a scooter on day 2 and check out some new places to stay on the beach. Most of the nice ones were too much for us; 5000-7000/night. No thanks! We found Siam Bay and right away fell in love with the private little beach. The water is super calm and great for swimming. Also it didn't seem very busy.

The Buan Yong Yuth Buri bungalows are where it's at IMO. They are the only ones right on the beach. We had #110 and it was awesome. Literally 5 metres from the beach! The regular price was 2500/night. I politely said this was too much and offered 4000 for 2 nights. They accepted

The room, much like the whole hotel, is nice but showing it's age. The free breakfeast in the morning was pretty decent. Eggs, bacon, the usual.

Only one other hotel, Sky View, shares the beach with Siam Bay. We checked out Sky View and it was in the 5000+ per night range. No thanks. We ate at the Sky View restaurant on day. It was not that good and very expensive. Plus lots of loud Europeans strutting around in thier speedos with their rockstar girlfriends close behind in high heels. No thanks. We rented a scooter from the hotel and went into town for food after that.

I should say that this hotel is a bit out of the way and IMO you need to rent a scooter to get around. Taxi's run irregualr times and are pricey.

Check out the Bang Bao fisherman's market. Very cool! Drive careful on the scooter as the roads are all over the place, but you will see so much more if you rent one.

Overall for 2000/night can't beat this place. The staff weren't overly friendly and the place was a bit dead. But a nice quiet bungalow on a beautiful beach on a busy island like Koh Chang is hard to beat!

Room Tip: Stay on the beach in the 100 # rooms. The apartment style ones up on the hills = no good

The good - the beach is quiet and secluded, they have the great swings out over the water. So relaxing to swim, take a nap, go read a good book, or get a massage right on the beach (prices are identical to those in town, about 250 baht for 60 minute Thai massage).

The ok - Rooms are just so-so. We had a villa at the very top, so the view was AMAZING. But it was 115 stairs each time to go from the beach to the room. My cousin had a villa on the beach, which was decent too (villas on the beach appear to have smaller bathrooms). Breakfast was alright. Lunch was very good, and pretty reasonably priced.

My cousin is Thai, so I did not have to do any talking to the staff, but they seemed accommodating. We had actually changed the dates of the trip, and they seemed to handle that well.

NOTE - You need your own transportation at this resort. The Koh Chang taxis are ok, but the resort is a little ways from a town in either direction, so renting a motorbike or having your own car is definitely recommended (we brought my cousin's car over on the ferry for something like $12 USD each way). But beware of the motorbikes - people are inexperienced and/or just downright stupid, and they are everywhere. Way worse than Bangkok.

Room Tip: If you're fit enough, the stairs to the top bungalows are worth the view. If you prefer a lot of...

We were a little concerned when we arrived as the resort is a big drive from the main road and the hills are very steep and winding. However there is Song Tao's to be ordered easily or if you are brave you can hire a motor bike which our friends did to get around. The closest town is Kai Bae which is quite bustling with lots of little shops, international and Thai restaurants, only 10 minutes away but would be a 30min walk.
The actual resort is definitely run down in some areas, it seems they have spent money of building a new set of bungalows and hotel but neglected the original area of the resort. However the two pools are both lovely and the restaurant reception area is nice and food good value. They sell beer, wine and soft drinks and i think Bacardi breezers but NO COCKTAILS. Really great that you can take your own drinks to the restaurant tho with no charge so we did that which made it cheap for us.
The beach is very small during the day but as the tide goes out it gets bigger and it is very picturesque with tree swings and a few benches to sit on. The water is very shallow but water is lovely and clean we found.
The new bungalows look lovely and right on the beach but quite expensive, we opted for the cheaper bungalows on the rocky beach. These were seriously basic and a little decrepit but we loved it, just perfect, private bungalow overlooking the ocean. We loved just hanging out on the balcony. Our room had no fridge or kettle same as our friends that paid a bit more for the bungalows up on the hill. It did have a TV with about 8 English speaking channels and also air con which was great!
I think we were lucky because our friends drive a car so it was easy to get around and go to lonely beach which is really nice and bigger.
I think because we were there over New year the prices were highly inflated. Our room was worth about 1500 baht a night max but we paid over 2000. The other bungalows look really nice though, i would have paid 2000 for the newer ones on the nice beach. To help you out our room was 204. Def recommend for those that are going for value.
HOWEVER. Our friends were really not happy with their rooms up on the hill, they were very basic for an apparently VIP room and they were up a steep hill. The manager was very unhelpful and rude towards them when asking for anything even when speaking in Thai. We had no problems and the other staff were really lovely and helpful.

Room Tip: Rooms on the left of the reception if looking from beach are much nicer. Ours was room 204 very chea...

We book a week here over christmas because it look so nice on internet. We get a old and very dirty bungalow. I dont think they clean it in weeks. There was bugs and ants everywhere in and around the beds. We saw some kind of bug [--] around the bungalow and bedsheets, curtins and towels was dirty. Outside have a table but no chairs... Wierd. Its a big noo noo this place. We took the fast checkout and loose the money but no way we will stay there.
We will never go near this resort again.
Its way out in nowhere.

Let's start with the downside to this hotel. We booked rooms at B600 per night, not expecting too much but the rooms we were given were awful. Sure, they were on the beach but I think they'd been put there 10 years ago and not used since. It took an upgrade to a beach villa (I think that's what it's called) at B1450 per night to get me to stay. In these rooms, there's lots of space but the bathrooms really need to be renovated. The air-con was leaking a little too. The curtains were the thing that annoyed me the most; beautiful white drapes that didn't quite fill the window and at night, allowed a great view of the people in the room when the lights were on.
There were a few little issues like the wi-fi being out for most of our stay and the breakfast being very sparse at 9.30am....
With places like this it's always good to review your thoughts after a good night's sleep and see how things look in the morning.

The sea was warm and we took a kayak out for a few hours to chill on the sea. The weather was lovely, not too hot, and lunch was served for us by the pool.
You really need some transport if you're staying here as it's 10 minutes out of KaiBae Beach along a winding, hilly road.

All in all, I have to say that once I accepted it wasn't perfect, all the bad things were cancelled out by being able to open the doors to our room and walk 10 metres into the warm sea.
A good place for families with younger kids, as long as you have some transport.

I stayed here in 2008 so my review may be a little out of date, but judging from their website they've actually improved a few areas. I loved it at siam bay we had a 3 day deal including all meals and a snorkel trip (which was excellent) and a night time canoe trip which was less exciting as the main attraction was supposed to be fireflies and glow in the dark plankton which we didn't really see. The staff on the whole were very friendly, one guy called Tat even took us to a festival and looked after us all night (he didn't want a tip or anything for it). We borrowed the canoes and paddled to the nearby island at sunset. We had a seafront modern bungalow which was gorgeous (if a little small) and I have no complaints whatsoever about my stay there. It was excellent value for money and great fun. Be warned the access road to the resort is incredibly long and steep and not suitable for people with disabilities. We didn't find it a problem as you can access the resort from a 10 minute stroll along the beach, or if you are on scooters the steep clim can actually be fun! but for some people this may be a drawback.
