Bit of a delay in writing this!
We spent a wk at the hotel in Feb-the last wk of our honeymoon and it was just what we needed after traveling about Thailand and Cambodia.
Its a boutique hotel with around 25 cottages-we had one of the beach ones which was lovely with our own decked area and loungers.
Its a great mix of classic Thai and contemporary and has a a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere without being intrusive.
The rooms are great with large comfy beds, big tubs and wet rooms, tv, dvd (lots to borrow from reception) and nice areas to sit outside.
The beach is right there but it isn't your beautiful stretch of sand like Krabi or Phi Phi but still they make the most of it with hammocks and loungers.

With this being a small boutique it is exactly that with a lovely outdoor restaurant serving great food-the buffet breakfast is excellent-evening meals amazing-I'm vegetarian and the chef was more than happy to experiment so don't assume whats on the menu is all you can have.

Service at this hotel is fantastic and we could not have asked for better. The staff went out off their way for you and were so lovely. The double checked our flights for departure too make sure they were on time-thankfully as our flight was canceled! and they organized for us to get on a different flight.

Location wise the hotel is pretty much in the middle of Koh Chang. We hired a moped think it was 400Bht for a couple of days to get around or you can flag down the jeep bus.
There's not much of a pace on the island but that's what we wanted, there are some great little restaurants outside- the O2 being one and enough to keep you amused but very chilled out.
There's also a great spa just up the road called Bodiworks ( I went every day)which is a real spa experience instead of the usual walk in massage places. Around 800Bht so yes more expensive but with a definite hotel spa level of service.
We couldn't decide between this and The Dewa and but glad we went here. We went to The Dewa for lunch and its lovely also but on a much bigger scale than this. If you want something intimate then this is definitely a great choice.
We were hoping to get back for our 1st anniversary but with baby on the way its not possible but we will be back next year!

My partner and I stayed here for 3 nights at the end of April 2009. We had just come back to Koh Chang after spending a few days on the smaller islands of Koh Mak & Koh Rayang and were after a little bit of luxury! We had a 'Garden' room - the other (more expensive) options are 'Jacuzzi' rooms, 'Beach Front' rooms and the private villas with pools.

We really liked our room - the bed was extremely comfortable & spacious (king size +), the air con was great, there's a TV + CD/DVD player (there's a good DVD library at reception), nice robes & slippers, safe, complientary mini-bar which was re-stocked every day (this was a really nice touch actually), umbrellas (we did get a big thunderstorm during our stay & needed to get to breakfast!), and both the room & bathroom (with walk-in shower & large bath) are a good size.

The breakfast buffet (included) was lovely - really good coffee, and they will make you fresh eggs anyway you like to go with the other items on offer (fruit, cereal, juices, pastries, toast, rice dishes, french toast, bacon, sausages etc). We did not eat at the pool bar or at the hotel in the evening. The prices are much higher than outside the resort, and the main area of Kai Bae is right on the doorstep. We preferred to walk down to a beachfront restaurant in the evenings.

Pool area was very quiet and relaxing - towels are provided and the sun loungers are very comfortable.

The only real downside at the Gajapuri is it's position on a very rocky stretch of beach - the rocks go quite far out, and they are exposed most of the day. You need water shoes to go in here if you don't want to hurt yourself! The main beach of Kai Bae is a ten minute walk along the shore. The resort does have a kayak you can borrow, but it's very tricky to get out to clear water (we tried it!).

Overall I would recommend the Gajapuri as we had a great few days there. It is more expensive than alot of Thailand accomodation (we paid 4000 baht per night), but still more reasonable than accomodation of this standard would be in Europe or elsewhere.

I stayed recently in this beautiful villa resort direct at the beach in Koh Chang. The resort is new and has 25 wooden villas some of them with their own pool. The location is perfect as it is direct at the beach but you only walk 5 minutes to the center of kai Bae Beach. The villas are equipped with TV and DVD and have a large bathroom. The mini bar is for free and they have a rich buffet breakfast. The staff was very friendly and helpful and it was a pleasure to stay there for a few nights and we will definitely come back.
