We had no idea weather the Amber Sands would be the tranquility that we were looking for. We took a chance and made the reservation just by reading Tripadvicer. And what did we found - well - we found a piece of paradise! The best stay ever in Thailand, and we have been there a few times! The owners - Julian and Cheryl - absolutely wonderful couple! They helped us with everything, diving courses, boattrips, scooters, transportation to/from BKK airport, telephone cards .....you name it - and always with a smile!
The garden is absolutetly wonderful, it´s a joy to just walk around on you own and enjoy! The food served at the restaurant - one of the best in Koh Chang - and still at moderate rates.
We loved our stay here and we miss it. Julian, Cheryl, Debby and the rest of the crew have created something outstanding! // Claes, Marina, Ludwig and Oscar

Room Tip: Beach house - we recommend it!

My fiance and I just returned from our 2 week holiday in Thailand. We traveled with our friends who live in Bangkok and drove down to Koh Chang for a few days. This was my 2nd trip and I was very relieved that Amber Sands was on the left side of the island and much more serene than the white sands area where I stayed last time. Julian was very responsive and helpful in the planning amd booking of our stay as well as very attentive to our needs while at the resort. The staff are all very kind and helpful. The feel of the place is very relaxing and probably the least "stuffy" resort I've ever been to. Nothing is forced upon you, and they really just want you to enjoy your stay and leave loving amber sands as much as they do. Julian had motor bikes delivered for us within 30 mins or so of our arrival which was very convenient. The property is great, the pool is nice, breakfast and dinner were always fantastic, coffee is great, friendly vibes, very comfortable beach hut style rooms. We stayed in a delux room and loved it. Waking up to the waves crashing feet away was so soothing. I had coffee and read my book on the beach swing every morning. We also took the kayak provided on site out for a little work out one morning. I highly recommend a stay at Amber Sands. Get on a motor bike and travel all the way down the left side of the island from the ferry and try the seafood restaurant at the very end for lunch one day, excellent! Also, ask about the secluded beaches on that side of the island. Its a mission trekking through the hills to get there, but it's WELL worth it.

Many other guests have reported about the objective qualities of this resort, that it is beautiful, cozy, tasteful, friendly, great quality for the price and all that. Totally accurate, every word of it. Let me add a few details.
Food is always important; who likes to stay in a place where you HAVE to leave for each meal because otherwise you suffer? Here, you don't want to eat elsewhere. Great Thai dishes, some Western style ones, flexible in spiciness and imaginative in the recipes. Great à la carte breakfast, you get exactly what you want, and the portions are well shaped (no heaps thrown at you, no tiny nouvelle cuisine pralinés either). So that's a big plus to be underlined.
When you look into the small bay, you just see a few traditional Thai wooden houses on stilts among palm and other trees; there is one small resort next door, but that's it; on the other side, you look into a natural bit of palm tree forest, right from your restaurant table, plus a few mangroves in the water, on the opposite side of the road, the jungle goes up the hill, so, unlike many many other places on Ko Chang, you feel quite close to nature. The view towards mainland Thailand changes every day, sometimes it seems very far away in the mist, sometimes you can see the Cambodian mountains, and it is all beautiful and peaceful.
Peaceful: when there is music, it is not loud, it is pleasant ambiance music, but unlike so many other places, you are not aggressed with loud samples of whatever the management thinks appealing to their audience. This is about relaxing and peace. If there is a family with kids who play in the pool, you hear the sound of happy playing (mostly), so it's no Magic Mountain here, but if you are looking for entertainment, buzz, party, this is the wrong place for you.
The amount of bungalows, just eight, allows Cheryl and Julian to be real hosts. They come to chat occasionally, they ask if you're alright with the bed, the food, the pool chairs, whatever, they give you advice or point out things to do, but they also leave you be if that is what you seem to prefer. You don't have to tell them, they know because they are attentive. So is the friendly staff. You rather feel at a friend's house who happens to have space and personnel, and before you leave, you help some with the running costs, that's how personal and lovely it is.
Hard to describe how someone creates an atmosphere, it needs a certain kind of spirit, and here it is. We (three well-traveled people from Berlin) have been travelling since 2006 once a year all over South East Asia, looking for nice, charming, well-kept beach resorts to spend the last 10 of always 30 days of travelling, we have looked in Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar for the right place -- and this for the 8th time in a row now, each December. Amber Sands is it, that's our bottom line. Julian and Cheryl have made their dream come true, and so successfully that their guests' dreams come true as well. Thank you!!

Amber Sands is truly a home away from home and beyond. My wife, I and our baby of 10 months had a chance, in November, to experience an unforgettable hospitality of Amber Sands owners, Julian and Sheryl. For us, although we are seasoned worldwide travelers, it was a first trip to Thailand, so there were lots of things to experience and questions to be answered. However, starting from the very first email exchange with Julian, and till the checkout morning, we understood how lucky we were to meet the entrepreneurs like Julian and Sherel who thrive with a genuine desire to exceed their guests expectations.
Once we landed at Bangkok, a prearranged taxi by Julian (clean, fresh minivan with a baby car seat) had already waited for us. Julian had emailed an easy and detailed instruction of where to find our driver. The whole ride to the door steps of the resort was a joy. The driver was safe and courteous, and upon request would stop for food or restroom break.
Upon arrival what we noticed right away was a beautiful and tastefully decorated landscape and an ever increasing feeling of calmness, and tranquility. The room was simple yet comfortable and, most importantly spotless clean with all the necessities that a vacationer might need, like a baby crib for example. There were no useless, unnecessary luxury items as some hotels carry, just plain simple, functional, comfortable and uniquely charming rooms.
The restaurant food is absolutely delicious, no matter what we'd ordered. When the restaurant is closed, there is an honor system setup where guests can have a snack or a drink on their own and just leave a note for the staff of things they’ve taken.
When we decided to rent out a scooter on the island, all we had to do is just talk to Julian and the scooter arrived to the resort at no time. Same experience was with arranging a Thai massage on premises. Relaxing professional and on time massage was arranged by the resort owners.
Also, upon checking out, all the charges were so well written out and documented (a discount was applied without even asking or pointing it out; all was done as advertised on the web) so that it took only a brief moment to confirm the charges.
To sum it up, Amber Sands is a great place for those who want a quiet and tranquil vacation. It all looks seamless, but I am sure there is tons of work done behind the seen to create such a great atmosphere. We told Julian and Sheryl that we almost want to be selfish about not writing a review. But in all fairness to the owners, people are ought to know about a place like Amber Sands where one gets what she/he expects and beyond. We are definitely looking forward for the next time at Amber.

My girlfriend and I stayed at Amber Sands for six days at the start of a three week trip to South East Asia. We wanted a quiet, relaxing stay on Koh Chang as a start to our holiday and that is exactly what we got. Amber Sands is in a low key spot on the East coast of the island, away from the much more developed West coast. The rooms are very comfortable with plenty of space and overlooked the beautiful gardens, the very welcoming pool and the sea.

Julian and Cheryl were fabulous hosts, taking care of us from the moment I sent an email to book through to when we arrived and throughout our stay. They obviously care a great deal about their guests and it shows. There were many options for trips and excursions but in the end we were quite happy to just to lounge around the pool and relax - we did do one trip to see (and ride) the elephants, which was a lot of fun. Julian booked for us and provided us with transport there and back.

The on site restaurant has an extensive menu choice, is very reasonably priced and most importantly, the food is delicious! We loved the Thai dishes (you can ask for them to be 'Thai spicy' but we were just fine with standard spicy!) but there are plenty of other choices if you want a change.

In summary, I would have no hesitation in recommended the Amber Sands to anyone wanting a quiet, relaxing getaway in a beautiful part of the world.

Amber Sands was an absolute oasis and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone thinking of going to Ko Chang.

The rooms were beautifully furnished and very comfortable and overlooked the sea. They were cleaned daily and had air-conditioning.

The restaurant was excellent. The food was very reasonably priced and some of the best we had during our 3 week trip in Thailand. The setting of the restaurant was also delightful with a view overlooking the sea.

The pool and beach were also lovely. They can also arrange a massage at the hotel which was superb and very reasonably priced.

It is away from the busy side of the island which we liked but if you’re after clubs and lots of bars which you can walk to, this is probably not the place for you. Having said that the island is quite small so if you wanted to venture over there it isn't very far by car/bike. If you’re after a relaxing retreat then this is definitely for you.

The owners Julian and Cheryl are fantastic. They strike the perfect balance between being very friendly and helpful but also professional and assisting with any issues in an efficient manner. They booked our taxi transfers to and from the hotel which was very helpful and saved a lot of stress. My girlfriend was also ill upon arriving at Amber Sands and they went out of their way to help her, from preparing her a special soup and buying her medication.

Thank you so much Josephine.

We are very pleased with the food from our kitchen, which many guests comment on. Thai food is just so good - the best of all the South east Asian cuisine!

Being a small resort with only 8 rooms, we have the time to spend with our guests helping them make the most of their valuable holiday time and providing some local knowledge on activities and places to see on the island.

Thank you for staying at Amber Sands.
