We have travelled to Thailand three times during the past four years. It was our first time on Koh Chang and at Amber Sands. Julian and Cheryl went out of their way to make our stay extra special. We were greeted warmly on arrival late at night and the kitchen was kept open specially for us after a long travel from South Africa. The food from the kitchen was some of the best on the island and the owners' hospitality was undoubtedly the best we have experienced after having travelled extensively in Thailand. Coupled with spacious, clean rooms (for the price), beautiful views from all the chalets, a well manicured garden, a swimming pool with a view, a massage lady on standby, and very friendly and helpful staff, this felt more like staying at a boutique hotel rather than a seaside resort.
Whilst on the quieter side of the island this is the perfect spot for getting away from the maddening crowds and just soaking in the sun and sea. We noticed how the owners went out of their way to accommodate a young traveller from the UK and a young couple from Germany who ended up extending their stay. We will definitely return to Amber Sands; it is a great value for money option!!

We spent two nights at Amber Sands, and it was wonderful. The resort is located on the east side of the island meaning it is less populated and busy, and about a kilometer from the Centre Point ferry station. Great for relaxing and unwinding which is exactly what we wanted. The owners Julian and Cheryl will help sign you up for any kind of tour you would like. We rented a scooter for a day and drove around looking at things on our own pace. The private cabana was wonderful as well. If we ever make it back to Ko Change we will stay at Amber Sands. The restaurant there is pretty tasty as well serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I would have like a little seafood on the menu, but that is the only negative (and a small one at that) I can think of.

Thank you for your review Sn0wSkier. We appreciate the time and trouble. We’re very pleased to hear that you’ll come back to stay with us if you get back to Koh Chang. Great!

Thank you also for your comment about having some seafood on the menu. We agree and think this is a good idea. The trouble with seafood is that it needs to be fresh, not frozen, and being a small resort, we don’t have the demand to warrant buying fresh fish every day on the chance that guests will order it.

But, what we have done for many guests in the past, is to buy fresh fish when we go shopping each day if they request it. To communicate that to all guests though, we’ll add a comment on our menu to inform guests that fresh fish is available on request. The only trouble is that there will be a slight lead time, but we believe that this approach will work for us and more importantly, for our guests.

Thank you for the suggestion.

We stayed at Amber Sands for a few nights in November 2009 on the back of the reviews written on trip advisor. First impressions were disappointing as the resort is located close to the main road. We quickly discovered the resort is on the wrong side of the Island as the beach is poor and the water is marred with diesel fuel from the nearby ferries.
The family atmosphere may suit some travellers, but we found it claustrophic and not suited to a young couple. They undoubtly go out of their way to welcome families however if you don't fulfil this criteria there are far better options. In fact we felt that Koh Chang has been spoilt by over development, making the effort to travel to Koh Mak or Koh Kood is a much better option as you will get a true Thai Island experience.

We are really disappointed that we received such a poor review and rating from Saltravelled, our very first bad review, and would like to make a few comments.

Firstly, let us say that we appreciate the time and trouble that any guest goes to when they submit a review to Tripadvisor. Tripadvisor provides a valuable service in helping travelers look behind the PR and marketing glossies to get to the real truth and narrow down the huge choice we face when researching how to spend our valuable holiday time.

We agree with Saltravelled that Amber Sands is on the “wrong” side of the island. The quiet undeveloped side of Koh Chang is what 99% of our guests are looking for. Most of our guests return from their first visit to the more developed west coast of Koh Chang and tell us that they’re so glad that they chose this side of the island.

The comment that we go out of our way to cater for families isn’t backed up by the Tripadvisor statistics when you consider that the profiles of the current reviewers show that almost 75% of them are couples, friends or solo travelers. We can assure travelers that we give all our guests the same high standards of service and hospitality.

We really don’t feel that it would be dignified for us to defend each of the ratings or comments, but if any prospective guest would like more information, then we’ll be happy to explain.

However, we cannot let one of Saltravelled’s factually incorrect comments remain unchallenged. She comments that the water is marred with diesel fuel from the nearby ferries. This is factually not possible. The ferries that are 1 kilometre away from Amber Sands at their very closest point operate on LPG, and don’t use diesel. It is possible that at the time that Saltravelled visited, there were some small crushed leaves from the nearby mangroves that had washed up onto the beach, but this is entirely natural and happens all over the island, not only on the east coast.

For our part, we urge travelers who use this excellent web site to do their research. Don’t necessarily select the high ranking resorts because they are highly ranked. That ranking is subjective, based on those reviewers’ likes, dislikes, preferences and tastes; which may not be the same as yours.

We are proud of our resort and our product, we work hard and go out of our way to provide great service and hospitality, and will always listen to our guests’ suggestions and recommendations with the aim of continually improving.

We are genuinely sorry that Saltravelled did not enjoy her stay. Reading the review it appears that they were looking for something else for their holiday as most of her criticisms, like the over development of Koh Chang, are beyond our control. We sincerely hope that you will make up your own mind.

I visited with my girlfriend and stayed in one of the 8 (I think) huts - very pleasant and comfortable, and extremely clean. The pool is beautiful and well-maintained. Although on the less popular side of the island (so the quality of the beach isn't amazing) the lovely host family make it very welcoming and personal. As a small, family-run resort it's perfect for family guests - some friends of ours were staying with three children and thought it was the best place they stayed in Thailand.

The only minor downside is that it's on the 'other' side of the island to the bigger towns (but that be a plus if you want peace and quiet!) so the selection of restaurants isn't great (although the cooking at the resort is great).

Finally, if you want to do activities on the island the owners will happily arrange it for you - we did a cookery course (THB 1200 per person) and an elephant trek (THB 1000 per person) which were both awesome.

This is a small resort with about 7 huts overlooking the beach and swimming pool. It is on the quiet side of Ko Chang and provides a calm, quiet relaxed atmosphere. The resort is run by a family who provide unbeatable service. The food is great and the staff couldn't be more helpful.

Thanks for a great stay

Jilly and Jane

We have stayed in many areas of Thailand and in many places over the last 9 years. This is the only accommodation that actually is better than it looks on the web. The gardens and views are beautiful, there is a great deal of attention to detail and a lot of hard work goes into making the gardens lovely and this attracts some of the most beautiful and big butterflies. Our accommodation was beautifully clean and very spacious and the only place we have stayed with really good sized wardrobes and coat hangers!!! (not something we have had at other places)

The whole family made us feel so welcome that we left feeling we really had made some great friends and if we lived closer would definately see them more often.

With having two young children , a husband with a bad back and quite a bit of heavy luggage we were worried about the transfer from the plane, ferry and by taxi to the resort. This was so easy though, we were met from the plane and we and our luggage were taken straight to the ferry a short drive away, our luggage was lifted into a taxi at the other end and after 5 minutes we arrived at Amber Sands.

We were also worried about how the children would cope with it being more of a quieter holiday than usual and they said it was the best holiday they ever had. Our 10 year old son really loved swimming in the day and playing games at night that were available - the things we often don't have time to do at home.

We stayed on this side of the island for 12 days and wish we had stayed longer. We hired a car and went on some lovely trips.

We stayed in Bangkok on the way but would recommend spending a few days in Bangkok on the way home where you can shop at some great places for example MBK where there is 5 floors of stalls where you can get some great gifts, clothes or games for the children.

We highly recommend this resort.
Thank you so much Julian, Cheryl, Kerry, Dion & Amber and can't wait to see you again.
