My partner and I both agree that our stay here was by far the worst experience during our 2 months in Thailand. The room we resided in needed quite a bit of TLC and lacked standard amenities. Beds were very hard and bathroom was quite dingy. Breakfast was standard and did not accommodate a vegetarian diet, despite multiple requests. No wifi! (Although to be fair, he did give us the option to check "only email" on his phone!) We tried to overlook these things and instead focus on enjoying the company of the host and the other guests...but unfortunately, could not do so.
The other guests of the resort were all of German descent (same as the owner) and were catered and tended to without question. We, however, were treated like second-class citizens. I wish this was an exaggeration. My partner and I are soft-spoken, mindful and respectful people and did not deserve to be ridiculed or humiliated in front of the other guests. Heiko, the owner did not know that I spoke German and made disparaging comments about our mannerisms, our "lack of intelligence" and our limited knowledge of the area (I would have imagined the latter to be quite common and even expected for those visiting the island for the first time. No?) It was mortifying to be made fun of, especially to amuse the other guests. At one point, he even referred to us as "farangs" to some locals as he rolled his eyes after we had asked him for directions. We found Heiko to be insensitive, cruel and deceitful.
Even then, we tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. We joined him, his wife and the other guests for dinner at a local restaurant. A restaurant, that he, as a local, could vouch for. Imagine my shock when I came across the restaurant on other review sites to read things like "stay away", and "disgusting". This was, unfortunately, confirmed when I received my rice with a dead fly on it and my plate of fish that seemed like it was fresh five days ago. I should have figured this when we had walked in and found the place to be COMPLETELY EMPTY. What was most interesting was the fact that Heiko, unlike the rest of us, did not pay for his dinner. Hmmm.
After continually assuring us that he had our best interests at heart, we began to trust him, attributing his behavior to miscommunication and cultural differences. Sadly, this was a mistake. He made arrangements with a local to give us the "best price" on a few services, when in reality, he conned us out of 4000 baht. I cried all the way back to Bangkok. Please spare yourself the heartache and stay away.
