“A sunset and a cocktail on stunning Klong Prao Beach”
Reviewed 16 December 2011

Great couple Mauro and Wan received us on their beach restaurant to share a drink while watching the sunset. We were staying just next door at the Blue Lagoon resort who recommended this place. We ended up coming back every night for a cocktail prepared by Wan while Mauro and his staff are preparing the beach barbecue with fresh of the day fishes from the archipelago. Definitely a good place on Earth !

“Beach bar/restaurant which looks like everywhere else but the food and drinks are excellent.”
Reviewed 15 December 2011

On the surface this looks like any other decent beach bar- cushions, a few tables and deck chairs set in a nice shady spot right on the beach.

The menu is everything you'd expect at a beach bar - Thai and western. Nothing out of the ordinary but it's prepared better than most beach bars, while the prices are about the same as the lesser restaurants on either side of it (the only good thing about one of the places next door was that while we were eating there a wild bore ran out, had a play fight with the waitresses, knocked them over, did a wee under our table and ran off. To be fair this made my night but it didn't make the food any better than average).

Anyway, back to the Pilot bar. For breakfast the muesli, fruit and yoghurt features home made natural yoghurt (I've never seen this anywhere else I've been in south east Asia) and the muesli tasted homemade too. We only meant to stay for breakfast and ended up hanging out all day.

At lunch we just went for bog-standard pad Thai noodles and they were really good. Often it's the simple dishes that separate good from bad Thai chefs and this place certainly passes that test. Other, more complicated food I saw come out of the kitchen looked great too.

For dinner we had the bbq red snapper. A beach standard but perfectly done. And great scallops too.

To drink we had smoothes, shakes and cocktails, all of which were great. The cocktails were much much better than in some of the up-market hotels on the same beach.

If you find yourself on klong prao beach you'd could do much worse than spend a day outside Pilot bar. I'd even say the Thai food is good enough for a special trip as there are some fairly ropey restaurants on koh Chiang.

“Na Ja”
Reviewed 24 October 2011

Was excited about trying the "best cocktails on the island" as proclaimed by other reviewers, and was sadly disappointed. Tried the margarita and mojito, both were too sour, and the margarita was extremely small. The location is chill, the prices were ok, and the staff was friendly enough, although they didn't seem overly familiar with the cocktails. Didn't try the food.

“Thailand at its best!”
Reviewed 27 January 2011

Extremely nice, relaxed atmosphere. Tables and chairs, thai cushions, sunbeds... it's all there and in the middle of the beach, so you have a spectactular view at sunset. Food is very good at low prices. Atmosphere reminds of the early tourist days.
Cocktails are also served... and some do have a lot more alcohol in it then you would expect. Definitely a great place to be for a relaxed, quiet dinner, drinks and just hanging around.

“Really nice and cosy restaurant and bar!”
Reviewed 15 December 2010

Strong recommendation! Outdoor restaurant and bar. Nice and cosy place, great and cheap food, good cocktails, good music (reggae or electronic music), nice people. It is a bit difficult to find. At low tide we could wade through a little river next to our resort (Tropicana), at high tide we had to cross a pontoon bridge. From the street you have to watch out for a restaurant called 'Blue Lagoon', pass it and find the pontoon bridge ...
