“Peaceful and nature !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2013

We spent one week in February 2013. It is certainly the best place to stay in Koh Chang if you like nature, peaceful and quiet place, and simple and tasty facilities. Everything is nice and well done. Staff very gentle and smily. Food is wonderful.
It is one of the best place I stayed in Thailand. You feel close to the nature in a beautiful environment.

The bungalow are in front of sea in the middle of the jungle, everything in wood, simple with a nice and natural decoration. You can not close the door (they give you a lock for the cabinet). The bathroom is very nice too, there is no hot water, but water is never cold.

It is only 10 min walk to the best village for drinks and parties. It is front of a small and sandy beach. Best location closed to Lonely beach.

I really loved this place!

If you dream of a quiet, rustic and natural get-a-way but want to avoid the low-scale tackiness so prevalent on the island, The Mangrove is the place for you. As mentioned, it's easy to miss and doesn't attract much foot traffic. You'll enter the property via a gentle downward sloping jungle path with little indication of what lies just a short distance ahead. Here you'll find a well-thought-out design that puts you steps away from an unspoiled private lagoon but also provides a wonderfully large thatched open air bar, restaurant and lounging areas.

The main wooden structure is circular with a very high impressive thatched roof and a beautiful wood center bar with stools and the perimeter of the room has benched seating scattered with big colorful pillows. Tables and chairs are arranged along the benches far enough apart to allow for relaxed gatherings. There are two large wooden decks off of the main area with low tables and more big pillows where guests can read, play games or just hang out. All this is surrounded by unspoiled jungle that's kept just tidy enough to allow for the great sea and sunset views and easy beach access.

The atmosphere changes depending on the guests and what they're into so sometimes it's just you and the sound of the waves and sometimes it's more festive with some great down tempo music on a pretty respectable (but never loud) sound system. Ying, the Thai owner, speaks English fluently, has a great selection of music and makes a terrific martini! Ask ahead and she'll be happy to stock some nice wines for you as well.

The food is really some of the best authentic home-style Thai cooking you'll encounter anywhere in Thailand. The cook has been with the family for more than 12 years and everything we were served was just fantastic. During our week there we finally just allowed the staff to choose what we had and were never disappointed. The restaurant is open to the public but it has got to be the best kept secret on the island. It's a good idea to call ahead or let the cook know when you'd like to eat so she can prepare and you can be sure to be served at that time. There's a skeleton crew on duty at times and you may not find set schedules always adhered to here, but then that's all just part of the charm. That being said, we found every effort was always cheerfully made to meet our requests.

Most of the bungalows are raised so expect to climb a small ladder to get in and out and as mentioned by others, water is heated naturally so take your shower before sunset if you like it on the warmer side. The ceiling fans do an adequate job of keeping things comfortable on most days, particularly in season and we never missed having air conditioning and were in fact happy to be away from it being that the whole place is such a natural paradise it would have seemed an intrusion. The beds are comfy and linens were always clean, as was the resort in general.

Do bear in mind that The Mangrove is a laid-back place so you won't be surrounded by people tending to your every need and occasionally something may take a bit longer than expected. Just let the place work its chilled out magic on you, leave the fussiness at home and enjoy! It may take a little more effort to get your reservation and you may in fact be turned away if you show up without one even if there are rooms available. The management doesn't appreciate the type of guests that appear might be prone to excessive rowdiness and disrupt the atmosphere. They are also a bit reluctant to allow very young children as a couple of big gorgeous but protective dogs patrol the property at all times that are friendly enough under normal circumstances but might not appreciate being interrupted during feeding time by curious toddlers.

I live in Thailand and have stayed on many of the islands and in many higher-end types of accommodations and, for me, this is my favorite place to unwind. Special places like this are few and far between and in my opinion, any trip to Koh Chang, even if it's just to stay at The Mangrove would be well worth it!

If you are seeking quietness and relaxation "The Mangrove" is definitely among the best low budget choices on Koh Chang. Sadly, it seems as if the island has seen its best days already - tourism now got it all. Well, nearly.

After spending one night at Klong Phrao Beach we moved closer to Bailan Beach and found our getaway: "The Mangrove". It is a little resort located in the middle of the jungle. Everything seems pretty simple, but is beautifully arranged. The bungalows are all different and come along with a kind of puristic (note: there are no windows), but lovely interior that is very well arranged. There is no hot water and no air con - but due to the temperatures on Koh Chang we were happy to use the cold shower. During the nights the fan cooled down the hut.

The complex is located in the jungle, but right at the beach. It consists of ten bungalows - some of them have sea view. There is a wide common area with comfy chairs (picture) and right next to it the restaurant with its pretty bar in the centre.

Surprisingly, during our stay there was just one other guest staying at "The Mangrove". One reason might be that their small sign at the street is hard to see. Also the complex is integrated so well with the surrounding jungle that at first sight we thought it to be closed.
Actually, we had to be quite persistent to be able to stay at "The Mangrove", because they did not answer our reservation request via e-mail. Still, once we arrived the really friendly staff made our stay a real pleasure.

We enjoyed this place very much, a very tasty breafast. The staff is very helpful and open. The place was very quite and we most of the time were the only guests, which we liked very much. The rooms don't have aircone and hot water, which makes it super natural getaway. The sea is right there! Special thanks to Christine for wonderful talks and the Love Cake recipe ;)

Room Tip: All the rooms are great
