Reviewed 16 February 2013

This was our second trip to Ko Chang and stayed at Kai Bae beach both times as it seems quieter than beaches closer to the ferry landing. This trip, needing two rooms, we looked for less expensive accommodations. We preferred bungalows but at Mam Kai Bae they were booked so we stayed in the "VIP" rooms on the second floor of the hotel.

My first impression was relief that we hadn't booked one of the bungalows between the registration building and the hotel as vans were parked 3 deep immediately in front of them in the sandy parking lot. We did not look closely at the other bungalows so I can't comment on them.

Our hotel rooms were clean and spacious, a fact accentuated by the lack of furniture. There was space for a second, king-sized bed but the only furniture beside one bed and the usual built-in vanity and shelves was limited to a small table and 2 stools which we used for bedside tables. There was a very small safe, not large enough for an iPad. The bathroom was also quite spacious but sparsely appointed. The bath tub had a sprayer but no shower curtain, minimal water pressure, only tepid water from the on-demand water heater, and no electrical outlets. The balcony presented a nice view of the beach but overlooked picnic tables, beach chairs, and a sandy road leading to more bungalows, Apparently the tables were well used every night as they were covered with paper plates and beer bottles every morning. Any partying was quiet - we never heard any noise from that direction.

The breakfast buffet was quite limited - no cereal or yogurt, no multigrain bread, no real fruit juice, no brewed coffee...

The second night, our water heater gave out and the staff removed one from an unoccupied room to replace it. Our second room lost power when we plugged in a dual voltage hair dryer. Again, the staff responded quickly and restored power. This could have been remedied even more quickly if there were telephones in the room we could have used to contact the staff. It only took a few minutes to walk to the registration building but for a hotel of this size to not have telephones is a basic safety issue in an emergency situation.

The beach was nice - clear, calm water, a few patch reefs not far offshore. Kayak rentals are available a very short distance away. The swimming pool, located on the 4th floor seemed small for a hotel of that size and was only open from 11:00 to 20:00.

For the price, Mam Kai Bae isn't bad but it could be much better.

We arrived in low season with nowhere per booked to stay and were recommended this place by a friend.
Turned out definitely the right choice.
We had looked at a couple of places online before getting the ferry over, but one we drove up to and just left as it was tatty and looked awful.
Another we looked around and while a nice resort, was deserted this time of year and still pricey.
These beach bungalows however were excellent.
A great price for a modern, clean, air conditioned room, with a fridge/mini bar, free wifi and breakfast included. Beds are really comfy too.
The first night we were in the slightly newer and more spacious ones just behind the beach ones (complete with terrace on the roof). We then were moved to one right on the beach. Albeit a little smaller and older, it had the wonderful views and from the terrace you are literally on the beach. Stunning and the beach was practically deserted.
Would definitely return without hesitation. Everyone is very friendly and the elephant towels with flowers a really nice touch.

We walked the length of the Kai Bae beach and decided on this place. The Burmese manageress was charming and speaks very good English, which helps at times. Though it was low season, most places on Koh Chang, including here, were unwilling to negotiate below a certain rate, even though they were mostly empty or near to it......quite exxy we thought. Mam Kai Bae had some redeeming features. Our beach front bungalow was cute. It was clean; the room servicing was good. The beach front restaurant has nice basic Thai food and is charming with its outlook and sunsets; though the serving staff could do with training in table service, clearing and wiping down. The owner is pleasant. They allowed me to use their computer and internet. As a whole, the island though has a tired and jaded feel with no one prepared to go the extra mile or even do anything unless they can get something from you. Trying to get laundry done is impossible.

Room Tip: My main advice would be not to go to this island when there are so many others to choose from with b...

Being our first trip to Koh Chang we decided on staying in the Beachfront Bungalow. Great rooms for a couple or even you don't mind being in same room as kids. The view was a great and location even better. The bar and lunch/dinner area was only 15mts away and the beach another 5mts more. A short walk from the room was the main road which also helps with lower traffic noise one would think.Staff were always helpful, booking day trips and airport transfers and the rooms were cleaned very well everyday. We will be back one day.

Room Tip: Leave the cleaners up to 50 Baht as a small thank you.

Stayed for 4 nights at Mam Kai Bae Resort in April 2012 in the VIP suite. Room was big and comfortable and fantastic view from the balcony of the beach and ocean. Is about 10 minute walk from the main road were all the shops and restaurants are but not too bad of a walk. Would not bother paying extra for breakfast as was very ordinary and eggs and stuff were cold. Pool is on top floor and is quite safe watch coming down as if wet stairs can be a bit slippery. Hotel is in quiet location and is very family friendly. Is some nice snorkelling right out the front of the hotel with heaps of fish. If you are looking for somewhere that is quiet and relaxing this is the place. Staff were helpful and friendly. Would stay here again.

We stayed in a beach bungalow for a short stay with the family.
Outstanding value for money, located on a quiet beach, close enough to good dining experiences, far enough from the main road to be quiet.
Breakfast is a bit limited but good and honest value for money.
I recommend to get a room on the beach - certainly worth the extra money when the sun is going down and the spectacle starts.
Tip : rent a scooter and discover the island.

Room Tip: Take a room on the beach - well worth the extra money.
