“Paradise retreat”
Reviewed 10 December 2013 via mobile

We stayed at the Mercure after arriving 5 days earlier than originally planned due to bad weather in Samui and we spontaneously booked 1 night online on the same day we were due to arrive. For a random last minute booking we could not have been happier with the service when we arrived off the last ferry from Trat, the facilities and our room. We felt as though we had landed in paradise! The reception staff were incredibly helpful booking taxis for us and providing first aid when my partner cut his foot (outside of the hotel) and we're always smiling.

We only wished that we could have stayed longer but the hotel was fully booked and so we were forced to move on. However we did stay elsewhere for a few nights and then we checked back into the hotel when a room became available! We got upgraded upon arrival to a private pool villa and we're amazed at how luxurious it was! We feel very lucky to have found this gem on Koh Chang.

In terms of location, it is a bit cut off from the island but it really depends on what you are looking for and for us we were looking for a quiet retreat away from the tourist hotspots. The surrounding town is peaceful and quiet with a few restaurants and the hotel provides an awesome retreat with a private beach, stunning pool and scenery and the best service we have had in Thailand. Would recommend this to everyone!

Taxi to Lonely Beach (nearest main town) was 30bt pp so very convenient.

Lovely hotel, amazing staff and a little piece of paradise!

My partner and I stayed at Mercure 4 night, and overall really enjoyed our stay - the room was lovely (deluxe ocean view) with the terrace and direct access to the pool and beach, location quiet, especially at night when you find yourself alone on the beach with no background noise or blasting party music from surrounding resorts. Despite the beach being artificially created, we did not experience any discomfort, maybe because the tide was fairly high during the most of our stay. The only downer was service. As we were moving from Amari Emerald cove hotel where we spent our first 3 nights, we asked Mercure to arrange a pick up of our luggage as we thought of coming on a motorbike. We we're told it would cost a ludicrous 1000 baht, for what is a max 10 minute drive and with a taxi would not cost more than 300. Of course we declined and tranfsferred comfortably in a public taxi arranged by amari for exactly 300 baht. On departure, we asked again if we could get a transfer to Trat airport, when we were told the hotel can only arrange a private Mercure car for 2500 baht...hotel staff claimed they were not allowed to book us on a shuttle and sent us to a private vendor. For a hotel that claims to compete with Amari cove which was flawless throughout our stay, it was a very disappointing and frustrating experience. Other than service, the hotel is great if you are looking to get away from it all and enjoy the idyll of koh Chang.

After visiting many places in Thailand I can definitely say that Mercure Hideaway is #1 for me.
This time I was staying in Pool Villa for the first time.
What can I say. Perfect accommodation with high privacy.
You have your own place with great shower, personal pool with some features and jacuzzi.
Everything is surrounded with pretty high walls, so you are not disturbed by other guests.
Room was clean and not very old.
Minibar provides wide choice of wine and snacks.
As I always use rental car, it's an important question to have safe parking. Mercure parking is huge and has a security.
For my stay in Thailand I will choose this hotel for sure.

Room Tip: Pool villas are excellent and not very expensive.

I have been coming to Thailand for about eight years now and although other areas of Thailand have recently been transformed into ugly lumps of concrete Koh Chang is still generally nice and green. The Mecure Hideaway itself is located on a nice stretch of beach that mingles in well with a stunning jungle backdrop. For the adventurous there is a great adventure park hidden in the canopy. The surrounds of the hotel are very well laid out and won't disappoint. The rooms themselves are comfy but shabby, however this won't impinge on your stay when paradise is on your doorstep. Initially stayed in a pool access room that did have a serious drainage issue, but was moved to a pool Villa that more than made up for any inconvenience caused. Ate breakfast for eight days of our stay and feel they could have been a bit more inventive. At least a coffee machine and fruit blender appeared during our stay which was a welcome addition. Did not eat dinner or drink at the hotel due to some very extortionate prices and the lack of takers even during happy hour shows their price structure seriously needs addressing. Special thank you to housekeeping who kept our rooms nice and clean during our stay and suggest any shabbiness complaints are more directed towards the ferry company who are the owners of this hotel and responsible for the general overall up keep. If eating outside the hotel you will find the Happy Turtle, the chief's cooking is not only absolutely sublime, but probably some of the best Thai food I have ever tasted. One other suggestion I would make is when booking a room on Accor website the hotel should give their members the ability to book a beach view that is not currently the case.

Room Tip: Pick a pool villa, won't disappoint

We stayed three nights here in the Mercure and it was my first stay. First of all the Location is quiet nice and the entrance hall is open and good designed. We booked via Agoda and got a very good rate there which at the end was maybe the best on this whole stay. Unfortunately we didn't realized that we booked two different room classes for the 3 nights - so first of all we had one with a direct pool access and the second was a standard room. On a total the pool access room is much nicer and has two chairs outside. But the pool is very in the back of the ground and a bit far from everything. I would say it is ok to book this room, but is not spectacular at all like the JW Marriot in Kao Lak e.g. with the direct pool access. The second room - the standard was a mess - in the last corner of the whole compound, very dirty toilet and incredible dirty windows in the back. The room layout is horrible and what is ridiculous - no outdoor furniture like in the other room.

So all in all it was not really understandable, the we couldn't stay in one room for the whole 3 days because the hotel was maybe booked 50-70% occupancy - so they were just inflexible here and we were told, that they have no GM at the moment. You can feel this everywhere in details. For a Thai hotel its a quite bad service attitude and the rooms and the whole hotel is much more a classical 4 star than a 5 star hotel. Do not expect too much here if you book. And if you go there, check that you not pay more that 3500THB. Its not worth it!

We planned to stay 4 nights in a Pool Villa, and stayed 8! We were not disappointed. The villas don't have a sea view, but they have a walled compound with your own pool, spa and garden. The restaurant was ok, the staff are so nice and eager to please (I couldn't get a nicely poached egg to save a life - big disappointment). We were there the last weeks of low season, so the resort was quiet, with a few families around but that was about it. Definitely try the lamb shoulder curry, even though the lamb was dry, the sauce was AMAZING (but very hot and spicy). We stayed on my birthday, and (spoiler alert) THEY BRING YOU CAKE!!! We were out for dinner, but were pleasantly surprised when we returned to find the tray with a surprise mud cake on it. Was a nice touch. The hotel is located near two very nice small towns, Bang Bao and Lonely Beach. The spa is also unreal, we had a few treatments, which were exceptional. A few translation problems with some staff, but it never caused too much upset, and any problems we had were fixed right away. I loved my stay, highly recommend this place!

Room Tip: We stayed in the top spec room, which in low season averaged $150 per night. Excellent
