Hostal San Angel

The room was small, kind of dirty but ok for the money. Only paid $ 12 for the night and for one night it was ok. Moved out next day to find a better place. Location is great but it lacks of all amenities. Shared my bed with a cat which was ok by me.

I stayed at this hostel in August 2010 with a group of 13 people. We were charged $15usd a night, which was pretty cheap. The hostel itself was alright- for a hostel. The rooms slept 2-3 to a room. They were not in great condition. The bathroom which every room had their own, was very sketchy and there was no hot/warm water. The bed was extremely hard and old and the pillows were basically non-existent. The sheets were not clean and I did not get a good sleep here because I found dead ants under the mattress which freaked me out. The benefits to staying here are the price, location, and the owners who are great and helpful. Your stay here includes breakfast which consisted of juice, coffee, fruit and bread. It was alright but I preferred to eat elsewhere. Their was a computer available for internet that was free, but the internet was super slow and everyone wanted to get on it. Overall I would stay here again, but only if I was strapped for cash.

Very central location and cheap - especially since it includes breakfast.
The rooms are basic and are a little run down with no natural light, but are clean and have a fan.
The family is very friendly and helpful - happy to provide advice on where to go.
Not many other solo travellers though, I moved so that I could meet more people.
And they have a really cute cat

We arrived at the hostel much later than we thought after a very long day of travel. In the evening light it seemed ok, we were only paying $25 for a private room. The mattress was rock hard and we did not sleep very well as i felt the room was a bit on the gross side. When we woke we got to really see how dirty the room was, the bathroom was not clean there was toothpaste spittle all over the mirror, there was dirt and pubic hair on the shower floor. We went and had breakfast of inedible fruit and stale bread. My husband and I are not high need travelers but this place was gross and before we even were going to ask to check out they asked us to leave as they had a large party coming and needed the room. We went to Hotel oasis and for the same amount of money got a clean room a little pool and clean bed.

Have stayed in hostal san angel on three different occasions, usually for a month or longer. Price is very reasonable, breakfast very good, location is excellent, right in the centre of town, close to the open air market, but still in a quiet street. Orlando the owner and his good lady are friendly and helpfull and sylvia the house keeper is a real gem. Rooms are clean and fresh, there is a communal tv area with tables and chairs for guests .All in all excellent value for money.
