The islets have many types of birds and monkeys. Kayak if you can, as you get a better feel for the islands and you can get closer to the banks to see wildlife. There is also a bar on one of the islands- la pirata- that's fun to paddle to and grab a toña!

365 Islets created after the last erruption for Mombacho volcano?
Breathtaking sight from every angle and beautidul view of the volcano on the background :)
Most of the tours are reasonably priced ($20-40) per boat... not per person
Make sure you visit the island with the monkeys... you can feed them!!!
There are great restaurants on site.. the best is the last one to your left (big green cone roof)

We took about an hour trip on the lake and toured around the islet of Granada. 10 people per boat and the tour lasted about an hour. It was relaxing and cooler than walking on the city streets. We booked this through princess cruise lines as part of a larger tour. How to arrange this on your own - sorry I can't be helpful.

The tour company used (I believe it was Leo Tours) was terrible. They took us to a family owned island that was just a landfill. The homes on some of the islands were stunning and if you went at twilight, the sunset was beautiful. Other than that, I was kinda bored. The monkey island was cool but we couldn't get anywhere near it so I was hugely disappointed.

The Isletas on Lake Nicaragua are just so beautiful. Filled with all kinds of fowl and other animal life, including howler monkeys. You can experience itin two main ways, either in kayaks you paddle or motorized tour boats. Tours are two and four hours, if I understand right. I kayaked two hours twice. Peaceful, fun, fascinating scenery and a very good cardio and upper body workout. $20 a person, including guide.
Getting to the kayak launch area is fun too, a four mile or so bike ride along the lake front, past cows and steers and one of the coolest public park areas I've ever seen.
Use caution and lots of strong sun screen. It's easy enough to get sunburned anywhere in Granada. On the water you can get a burn in just 20 or 30 minutes. It's hard to imagine just how intense the sun is there. Bring plenty of water.
Our guides brought us to an island restaurant a couple miles out into the islets, where we had a beer and decent BBQ.
I used Leo tours on the Calle Calzada both times, and was happy with the guides. They're one of several good and reputable outfits offering various tour and guide packages. DO NOT use anyone who doesn't have a business office as a tour guide. There are scammers working the area.
