The hotel is in a great location right next to the central park and close to the restaurants and the lake. The staff was very welcoming, especially the doormen. The only problem we encountered was that there was a significant hole in the ceiling above my bed and when it rained the two nights we stayed there, the water would drip down on my bed. It looked like the hole had been patched up before, and they were very gracious about fixing the problem in the future, but you might try to avoid room #25 anyways. Dispite the minor upkeep error, the value was good for the price.

Attractive hotel just off the main square with lots of cafes and restaurants nearby. We had a large, beautifully decorated room and also enjoyed the pool area. Reception staff were helpful and although there was only one computer available for internet use, it was never a problem getting to use it. We'd definitely stay here again.

Stayed 3 nights in April 2008. Very nice hotel with about 35 rooms. Well maintained, quiet, and two small but nice pools. Rooms are good with large bed - ask to see the rooms as some have windows and allow more light during the day (I had room # 8 on second floor towards the rear). Really like the property but found the staff to be not so friendly but efficient.

We are a family of five and we really enjoyed the Hotel Colonial. The atmosphere is fabulous, and our kids (ages 7,10 and 12) loved both pools. One pool is by the bar, and we could easily get cocktails while the kids swam. We were hungry one afternoon, and the restaurant was closed-they ordered a pizza for us from down the street and had it delivered to the pool! We've read about power and water failures, but we had none of those troubles while we were there. We had a two level family room with a large bathroom and a small fridge. There is free WiFi, but also free computers in the lobby with fast internet access. We used Amigo tours for a trip to Masaya volcano and around the Isletas. Elvis was our tour guide and he was terrific with the kids! Amigo tours is next to the Hotel's lobby. The hotel location is perfect, 1/2 block from the Park Central, so the noise was never a problem for sleeping. Overall great experience!

This is just a phenomenal hotel in an amazing town. Colonial is a peaceful respite from the bustle of Granada. We loved sitting by the pool, and the rooms, pool, breakfast room and lobby all have intense character and charm that is distinctly Nicaraguan.
We were traveling as a group of grad students on spring break, about 11 of us altogether. Some of us were used to 5 star royal treatment and willing to spend the big bucks, some of us still consider ourselves backpackers through and through. But we were all extremely fond of this hotel. The bartenders make some of the best mojitos and pina coladas weve had, and were quick to serve us at the small swim up bar. We made friends with much of the staff here and so it seemed had many of the other guests.
My girlfriend and I travel frequently, and stay in a variety of different types of hotels, and we were in firm agreement that hotel colonial is a very special property.

My husband and I came back to visit Granada after 17 years. Many things have changed for the better,a bigger choice of restaurants, cafes, hotel and hostels, and Granada is now an up and coming city attracting tourists from all over the worldl. This time we travelled with our three daughters, couldn't stay in the cheap hostels, but had to look for something decent. Found "El Hotel Colonial "on the internet, faxed and e-mailed hotel manager, who was very helpful.
Was grateful for smooth reception with booking or reservation, was shown to our rooms, a suite, with an attic with two double beds and a kingsize on the bottom floor, spacious, clean and well-kept. Stairs very wide and steep, not recommended for younger children. Our five year-old slipped once going to the toilet at night on the lower floor.
Breakfast was a big disappointment, overpriced and just created problems when my kids wanted things from different menus. Would suggest to hotel to serve breakfast buffee, and charge a flatrate. Chatted with a German couple who we had seen in Montelimar just a few days before and their breakfast was included in roomprice, but ours wasn't. Not happy with inconsistence. Our daughters used the pool in Hotel nearly everyday, but I never saw anyone clean it, so was a bit sceptic.

It didn't matter, we only used the hotel as our base, and as there's
such a variety of places to go out and dine etc, no problem. We warmly recommend La Gran Francia, although it charges western prices, its gourmet nica-french inspired fusion cuisine is delicate, service and the 150 year-old setting is admirable, impeccable and exclusive. Another restaurant worth a visit is El Zaguan, a typical Nicaraguan restaurant, with troubadours playing Nicaraguan and Mexican boleros and music at request. Atmosphere, food and service is the envy of Granada. It's the third of the price of La Gran Francia! Then there's El Dario, also in the style of La Gran Francia..Granada has such a potential...
My heart goes out to Nicaragua, admire how the are coping with the electricity power and water supply black-outs, but it puts a strain
on you while your supposed to be on holidays. Toilets are not available for hours at times.
Thankfully El Hotel Colonial and other good hotels had their own generators and electricity and water was up and running within minutes, but please be sure to phone reception if you need the water to come back on.
We also used the hotels coach service for outings and transfer to airport. We found that service overpriced and driver not overly friendly. He, a young Frenchman was quite concerned about the time not to be overdrawn outside our agreement, even by minutes. This is an attitude not common for Nicaragua, where locals have a very relaxed attitude and always give a little extra charm and personal touch to their service.
Don't forget to pay a visit to the Masaya Volcano and artesan market.
Every tourist brings a hammock home from that market.

we stayed at the Colonial from Nov. 21 to Nov. 24, 2006

GRANADA: I am really glad you booked us into the "Hotel Colonial" and not the Hotel La Grand Francia. We checked it out and saw, that the Pool is not in an open area, it has a cover and no sunshine would come in. The Pool at the Colonial is in an open courtyard without a roof and the sun comes in, so one really can relax. The room at the Colonial was in tip top condition and everything worked, and the mattress is really good. Breakfast was excellent too. We had our evening meals at the Hotel Alhambra located on Parque Central, it worked out great. One evening meal we had at the fancy La Gran Francia, it did not live up to it's billing and we paid double the price than at Alhambra. The only thing which really needs to be being taken care of is the cleanliness of the Parque Central, where all the Tourist congregate. It is full of garbage, and does not leave a good impression. Funny though, just a few streets away we saw government employees cleaning streets and park areas on a daily basis.
