“Lovely little hotel with great location”
Reviewed 26 January 2014

We took a one-night tour from Costa Rica to Granada, and the tour company booked the Hotel Colonial because their first choice (The Best Western Al Mirante) was booked. We really lucked out! Everything about the Colonial is charming. It's a relatively new hotel designed in the hacienda style. New means everything works! The managers, a delightful Swiss couple, were cheerful and greeted guests. The front desk staff was gracious and efficient, and very helpful when we needed directions, maps, etc. There are two swimming pools (both deliciously warm). Breakfast in the courtyard offered several options, including waffles and a fruit plate, but we had the tipico breakfast with eggs, rice and beans. Convenient location a few steps from the central park meant lots of people watching, photography, and strolling. We'd happy stay here again.

Hi

Thank you so much for your very kind comments about our hotel. I do appreciate that and it shows me that we are doing most things correctly. Comments like yours make us happy, but not sleeping. We try all to get better in little and big things.

I hope to see you one day again in beautiful Nicaragua and would be happy if your choice would be again Hotel Colonial.

Kind regards

This is the first time I've ever felt compelled to write a review, so I'll be brief. Everything about this place is exceptional: the staff, the decor, the accomodations, the bar, the pool. All well maintained, beautiful, helpful. Just great. Only one teeny tiny downside and I'm not sure it's attributed to the hotel... we arranged to be picked up at the airport with the hotel and waited over 90 minutes for our driver who never showed up...UNTIL we were about to hop in another taxi. Probably a misunderstanding. So just get yourself there and relax and enjoy.

Room Tip: I had room 30 which was at the way end of the hotel, but there is a somewhat private pool there, our...

Hi

Thank you for your very nice comment on Tripadvisor. We are happy that you liked your stay with us and we hope that one day you will come again.
Sorry for the confusion at the airport. This was a mix up with your friends who arrived 1 ½ hours before you did.

Kind regards towards San Francisco (one of my favored places of the world - great city!)

The hotel is a little jewel with all the things needed for a relaxing and peaceful retreat. Sitting at the pool in one of the patios, listening to the sounds of water and feeling the soft breeze, creates a perfect atmosphere to read a book, write your diary or just let your thoughts wander.

From the moment I walked in the hotel, I was greeted with a warm welcome and smile by Maria Jose, who was at the front desk. After having a horrible experience at Hotel Mar Dulce where I stayed for 7 hours, Maria Jose went to get the Managers, Jacqueline and Remo Aere and also the owner of the hotel. They went out of their way to get me a room, as the hotel was completely packed. There is no doubt that this hotel is one of a kind. Hotel Colonial is truly a FIRST CLASS HOTEL. It is difficult to express how incredibly wonderful this visit was. The room was so beautiful, the king size bed was so comfortable, as I have had 3 back surgeries this is a MUST. This hotel has exceeded my expectations and the restaurant where they serve delicious breakfast and the bar are equally as impressive, but it was the people at the hotel and restaurant completed the visit. Without exception, I was treated as if I was family and I felt as if each and every member of the hotel and restaurant cared about me and making my visit a warm and positive experience. I am sorry I can not give this hotel what they deserve: 7 STARS!!!!!

Room Tip: All rooms are beautiful and the location of the hotel is perfect

What a great character this hotel has! Beautifully curated landscape inside the property and 2 pools surrounded by old world charm...inside of the rooms were decorated with vibrant and colorful furniture and inviting wall colors. Loved the warm colors of the bathroom walls, floor, and the tiles that had a Mediterranean touch. Breakfast (not included but very reasonably priced) is served around the main pool area which is next to the bar that becomes popular during evening hours. Try the 18-year old rum or caipirinha here...:-)
This ambiance is ideal to relax and strike up conversations with fellow travelers, which I did with 4-5 different groups that I got to meet and make friends with. Loved the service by the lady (Claudia ?) attending the bar. And the staff at the front desk was simply outstanding. Laura (?) went above and beyond to offer suggestions and help arrange trips - I did a fantastic kayaking trip at Lago Nicaragua (highly recommended, ditch the boats if you really want to experience the wildlife here) and also got a car service to myself ($50 total for the whole day) to tour Masaya volcano, Masaya market, Pueblos Blancos, and Catarina village (view from top is amazing, have lunch there if you do go). I discussed with Laura what I wanted to do in Granada and she was very helpful in arranging the rest. Property manager seemed to be very friendly with the guests as well and it's very clear to me that everyone here tries hard to make guests' stay truly memorable...only if wifi worked a little better inside the rooms...:-)
Nicaragua portrayed genuine warmth and a great sense of down to earth comfort that resonated through its people that I met on this trip and the places that I visited - Hotel Colonial did the best job in cementing that notion - through their smiles, positive attitude, and clean & character-rich ambiance. I felt truly happy while I was there and knew I wasn't the only one, an observation supported by a number of returning visitors. Would definitely recommend as the place to stay in this beautiful colonial town where I hope to return one day soon...

This was my second time staying at Hotel Colonial and it was just as wonderful as the first time. The hotel is gorgeous! From the sparkling blue swimming pools and lush landscaping to the clean and spacious rooms. The staff is super friendly and went out of their way to make us feel totally welcome. I could not have been happier with my stay here! Looking forward to coming back.
