“Just 1 Night But Great”
Reviewed 18 March 2009

We only stayed here for a night but were very impressed and I highly recommend it. $75 plus tax for a double room on the second floor with breakfast.

Very efficient reception (Lauren, who once lived in California) made a Leon hotel booking for us without a bother. She was pleasant.
The breakfast was perhaps the best we had in the few cities we stayed in. Everything: eggs, pancakes, fruit, good coffee.

Room was a little tight, but roomy enough for a queen size bed, and with a low ceiling. TV was decent sized. Shower strength was okay but tricky to navigate between hot and cold. No view from the room other than interior courtyard.

Located on side street right by the central park and Hotel Alhambra. Attractive blue façade to building. Nicely planted interior, very nice looking pool that you actually could swim in. And a swim up to bar if that interests you. Only one internet station so I had to wait a little, no bother. I like this hotel. It costs less than the others.

Overall Score: A.

My wife and I stayed in 4 hotels in Nicaragua, and this was our favorite. The room was huge and clean, and the bathroom had HOT water. (Seriously, you need to be careful you don't burn yourself.) The rooms overlook a quiet courtyard with a swimming pool. Breakfast was great--some of the best gallo pinto we had in Nicaragua. The service was great, and there are a couple of computers in the lobby to check e-mail. I would highly recommend this hotel if you're going to Granada.

Everything was great. We arrived in Managua and the hotel had someone waiting to pick us up. We had two rooms on the second floor. Both were clean, well decorated and sunny (request the second floor!). They only serve breakfast but it was great (don't believe they offer complimentary breakfast with the room anymore but if you do negotiate that make sure you keep the email confirmation saying breakfast is included). The pool was nice (we spent several hours each day enjoying the sun around the pool). The location is wonderful. The main park is on the corner, the bank on the other corner, and an internet cafe is right across the street where you can make cheap international calls. Right next door is a blind massage place that you must check out (real cheap too). The hotel provided two computers to access the internet. The staff at the desk spoke english well. All in all we were very pleased with our experience at the Colonial and have already recommended it to others.

Checked in here on our last night, to find the biggest bed I have ever seen in a hotel. And what comfort. An amazing room, right opposite the bar, all very clean, and the perfect place to spend the last night. The whole place is a colonial gem, as is the town itself, the location could not have been better, just off the main piazza, and we just wished we'd stayed longer. Alas, it was not posible. During the night, there was a big leak, some of the water coming into our room, but by the next morning, it was as if nothing had happened. The town itself experienced a power cut that night, so we ended up having a beer by candlelight. These things should not deter the reasonable traveller from coming here, and you would have to be really out of sync with the place to see it as anything but a minor drawback. Wonderful.

Have been staying at this Hotel for years, and in terms of charm and consistency it is the best. There are some newcomers - but this hotel delivers every time.

We read the other reviews of this hotel before having our travel agent book it as part of our package. As you can imagine, we were surprised that our experience was vastly different from others who have stayed here, but we urge you to consider our experience.

1. First room choice had one tiny one window the size of an air conditioning vent at the top of the room making it dark and dingy. We asked for an alternate room, which the hotel staff immediately honored.

2. Unfortunately, it was only during the next day that we were impacted by a far greater problem with the second room. Directly across the street is a merchant who plays VERY LOUD music from opening until closing. While on vacation, we were forced to wake up earlier than desired and unable to relax in the room at any point during the day. The Colonial staff said they've had many guest complaints and asked us to write a letter that the management would take to the local governmental office, but there was nothing they could do about it at the moment.

3. The toilet had a noticeable build-up of dust and dirt along the edges. One day, a table in the hallway across from our room had dirty plates sitting on it the entire day.

4. The hotel referred us to their travel agent who we found provided us with information that disagreed with what we read in our travel guide or what we learned from other travel agents in town. For example, he said that we could only go to the Masaya Volcano with 8 people, but other travel agents were comfortable with 5 (as mentioned in our guide book). Also, he said we would not find a local taxi to take us to the Masaya market and would have to book through him. Again, we found plenty of taxis who would take us.

Due to the number of positive reviews, perhaps we caught the hotel during a bad moment, but all of the above problems would not lead us to recommending it to anyone especially with so many other hotel options in the immediate area.

  • Liked — Hotel staff was generally friendly; location
  • Disliked — VERY loud, dirty, and disappointing

We go to Nica every year on a mission trip. We work in several locations but we ALWAYS stay at Hotel Colonial. The staff is extremely accommodating to our needs and goes out of their way to assist us on every front. They are one of the most wonderful things about Nicaragua. Even the year that they were doing construction they reduced our rates. It is a wonderful price, a central location and lovely as well. Go, enjoy and you'll write a great review too.

  • Liked — A very positive experience all around - staff is awesome
  • Disliked — The blackouts from the city electrical supply. I think the hotel is now on its own generator when this happens.
