“Xanadu - The Place To Stay In Granada”
Reviewed 31 May 2013

Can't say enough about Xanadu - house itself is beautiful, with all the amenities; location is great; owner Doug and support staff Maria wonderful to deal with. Gave us great tips on restaurants and places to visit, and even called on our behalf which ensured great service (Doug and Xanadu are well-respected in the Granada community). When I return to Granada Xanadu is where I'll be staying.

It was a privilege to stay in such colonial house breathing in passed times with a flair of modern time. For one time it makes you feel the owner of such spectacular property since it has only three rooms, so much of the time you are on your own. The housekeeper, a very nice sweet lady, takes care of your needs.
As for the interior, I would describe it as beautiful ethno-tropical style, all different styles coming together in nice balance. There is an interior swimming pool though with a look at the stars above...in the rooms all fine materials, bed linen and great soft beds, mmmm. What you waiting for??!!

We found this perfect place to stay via our relative now living in Nicaragua. Situated in the heart of Granada city, the colonial style old capital by Lake Nicaragua. A perfect base for experiencing Ganada and its surroundings. And what a base! The host, Douglass Hughes, welcomed us and gave an introduction of the newly opened "hotel". (We felt more like we had borrowed Douglass' house, and were his guests.) Everything was thouroghly restored in a pleasant colonial style.Cool atmosphere, fans and air condition secure agreeable climate for everybody. Nice big swimmingpool and outside/inside relaxation areas.
Maria, the cook and housekeeper is very nice and helpful perparing breakfast and assisting in shopping.
Douglass also took us for an adventurous sightseeing in Granada and on the lake. We also visited his development project "Valle Escondido Granada" - what potencial this place has, with a faboulous location overlooking the city and the lake.
Thank you!

My relatives from Norway and I staid at Casa Xanadu and we were delighted. I've lived in Nicaragua for almost eight years and have never had a more pleasant surprise. Located in the heart of Granada across the street from the San Francisco Convent and up the street from the popular Third Eye, kiddy corner to Kathy's Waffle House, Xanadau is a recently remodeled wealthy family's classic Hacienda. The gates open to a beautiful long typical Granada garden with waterfalls and exotic plants. Three giant staterooms with high ceilings, flat screen TV, personal phone and Jacuzzi tubs are hard to chose from. Each has its own exotic decor. The host and owner Douglass Hughes is there to greet and help.Maria is there to cook breakfast and tend to every need of the guest. The gorgeous swimming pool wraps around a covered bar and dining area. The beds are wonderfully comfortable!

Room Tip: All three room are magnificent. The middle room has its own sitting room. The walls must be three or...

We are world travelers and although I often use trip advisor I have never authored a review until now. This amazing villa cannot go without comment on my part. I found its appearance exceeded the professional photos available on the website. Granada is an incredible vacation destination that is poised to further explode with globetrotters within a couple of years, and this place will easily be able to command three times the current price. Casa Xanadu is a destination unto itself. We stayed seven days and often just wanted to relax in the luxurious trappings of this updated Colonial era villa. Casa Xanadu has expansive gardens, a salt water pool, incredibly high ceilings and is adorned with works of art from the owner’s world travels. It merits a feature in a travel Magazine. The housekeeper, Maria, is more like a guest relations manager. She assisted us with shopping on our first day, prepared meals and made a cappuccino that any barista in a five star hotel would be proud to serve. This a large place, with three large master bedroom suites, flat screens, Jacuzzi tubs, ample indoor and outdoor seating areas, a barbeque, gourmet kitchen and steps away from many shops and the restaurant district. We have many friends who rely on our recommendations before making their travel plans as they know how picky we are. This place exceeded every expectation. Casa Xanadu set the bar very high for our next vacation. We may even break tradition and return next year.

This is a beautiful old colonial house restored by the owner as a vacation rental house or (very) small hotel - in other words you can rent the whole place or just a "suite". We took the whole house just for two of us and had the best time - it would work really well for a family or group of friends, too. It's beautifully and very comfortably decorated with a reasonable-size pool in the little back garden, a full well-equipped kitchen, bbq, a/c in the bedrooms, cable tv, and housekeeper, all in a great central location in the historic center of Granada, but peaceful and quiet. A real oasis. Granada makes a great base from which to enjoy this part of Nicaragua, while having the convenience and amenities of this very tourist-friendly historic city. The owner is really going out of his way to accommodate his guests and provide a wonderful stay. It's totally different than staying in a bigger hotel and that's its charm. You have to want to be a little bit independent (no room service!), but that's the point. I highly recommend this place and look forward to going back.

This is an old home turned into a lovely hotel. There is a beautiful interior courtyard. The owner is friendly, the rooms clean and spacious, lots of space for sitting and reading. There are very few rooms, so it is a quiet, secluded atmosphere only 2 blocks from the town centre.
