The Alhambra is right on the plaza in Granada. Staff is excellent. By Nicaraguan standards, it is luxury. It is not luxurious. But this is Nicaragua, and if you wanted luxury, why did you go to Nicaragua? If you want to meet wonderful, kind, open, people, then Nicaragua is the country and the Alhambra is the place. Air con works sometimes, but the electricity in all Nicaraguan cities, including Granada, is shut off for hours each day. Sheets, amenities, pool, beds? Better than elsewhere in Granada and don't be so fussy. At the Alhambra, you can sit in rockers and people watch, or eat and drink at what may be the single best location in the country. Food is very good too. The beer and rum is even better. We paid under $40/night. Granada is small and isn't elegant colonial town like you'll find in Mexico. It is poor and the roads in and out are full of oxen and horses, etc. If you want luxury, Nicaragua isn't for you. Go to Miami. But if you like or love Central and South America, and if you like people who still take the time to visit one another, this is the place. You'll meet lots of people. Nicaraguans smile at you, and they mean it. When I first got to the Hotel Alhambra, I wondered why it got such good reviews. Three days there and now I know. The first day away and we missed it already. Still do.

For Nicaragua this is an expensive hotel. However when compared to hotels in the UK (especially) and the US, then $60 a night for a spacious and comfortable triple room with cable tv, large bathroom, all in a smart and very well presented hotel represents (to me) value for money.
All the staff were friendly and helpful, and the food was more than reasonable, although (again) expensive for Nicaragua.
It is in the heart of this interesting and beautifully located (sandwiched between a volcano and Lake Nicargua)city, and made a comfortable change from the more basic (due to the nature of the trip) accomodation we had experienced further North.

We spent 2 nights at the Hotel Alhambra in Granada. It's one of 3 recommended tourist hotels in the city and is well situated on the city square, pretty much walking or quick cab ride to major sites.

The hotel is a rennovated, very old colonal building which gives you a genuine feel for the culture city. The lobby is the most recently rennovated part and is amazing--lush tropical plants, antique furniture (love the rocking chairs!), candles at night and a small swimming pool. The restaurant food is fairly good although we only had the included breakfast there as there are several very good dinner spots right around the city. The rooms, however, are nothing special and should be the target for some sort of rennovation in a few years if Granada is to be a "tourist" destination. Our room was plain white had two rather uncomfortable double beds (as is typical in central/south america). Slightly threadbare sheets and towels and a noisy airconditioner, which thankfully, did keep the room cold. The bathroom is large with a huge walk in shower and we did have hot water the entire time we were there. They also have cable TV with a few US channels.

For our purposes the hotel was fine since we were touring the city and the lake most of the daytime and then really only using the room to sleep. I think the rate was $60-80 per night although we booked through a tour operator. If you want a little more luxury I think the Hotel Colonial (right around the corner) is the next step up and then San Frisco (???) which is more in the $120+ US price range is purported to be the best in town.

As a note, Granada is a fantastic little city. I encourage all to try to see the church and enjoy walking along the central area looking at all the houses. The streets behind the hotel are host to several hopping night clubs and the area behind the church (opposite side of the square) boasts several wonderful and reasonably priced restaurants--a full dinner for two including wine, two aps, two entrees and dessert was only $35 with tax and tip at one of the best spots in town.

Enjoy!!
