“EXCELLENT HOTEL”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 March 2014

We just returned from a 20 day trip to Nicaragua where we spent a week at the Hotel Plaza Colon. The hotel exceeded all expectations. It is a beautiful colonial hotel in what has to be the best location in Granada. We enjoyed countless hours watching the local scenery and people from our balcony overlooking the plaza - and in very comfortable rocking chairs. The room was tastefully furnished and very clean. Service was exceptional. All the staff were helpful and friendly. Prior to arriving, the hotel even made our car arrangements for us when I could not get responses from other transportation sources advertising on the internet. The breakfast was delicious and served in a stunning court yard setting. The hotel is a great place from which to explore local tourist destinations and is within walking distance of very good restaurants. We will return.

"The place " to stay in Granada ! So very comfortable and way above the other hotels in this beautiful city . So professional !!
At the reception Victor , Joanny and Mureil were exceptionally helpful . Bedrooms were luxurious and you could even get BBC World News ! Try to avoid rooms close to the breakfasting area unless you are an early riser . Only fall in service was at breakfast where one f they male staff ( Juan?) was rather too brusque. Could do with a gentler disposition. It wasn't a good idea either when breakfast was finished emptying containers of water into the drains beside the swimming pool right in front of us ! Very off putting whilst guests are still eating .
Overall though , we felt this hotel was wonderful !

Dear Thomas,

I appreciate you taking the time to write about your experience with us! Thank you for your kind comments and very valuable feedback.

I apologize that Juan was not as his best last week when you stayed with us; when I read your comments in our service survey (the sheet you filled when you checked out), I sat down with him and explained to him that his challenge was to provide fast and effective service WHILE being gracious and friendly; which he is most of the time, but even the best of us sometimes 'drop the ball'. He received this constructive criticism very well (as he has for the past 4 years) and I trust he will keep it in mind from now on.

In the service industry there is always tweaking and adjustments that need to be made... it is challenging, but never boring!! And now, after 8 years, I can say that the 29 Nicaraguans that make up the Plaza Colon team, sure love a challenge!

As for the water being drained by the swimming pool... I totally agree!!! It is a terrible idea and not something I would want to see while I am having breakfast, I will make sure it never happens again. SO SO SORRY FOR THAT!

I hope we get to host you again in Granada and am very glad to hear that you loved your experience with us.

Warm regards,

Maria Isabel Canton

This is an amazing place to stay. We ensured that we had a room with a balcony which was well worth the extra money (maybe about $20 extra). We enjoyed our amazing view of the plaza from the balcony. The staff is friendly and extremely helpful. They provided us with a map of the area so we could navigate our way to dinner. The hotel is a close to Calzada. Calzada is a street lined with shops and restaurants. The hotel also has a really nice complimentary breakfast every morning. Lastly, the property also has Wifi, a pool, and rooms with TVs (about 100 stations). This is the place to stay if you are looking to experience Granada.

Room Tip: Ensure that you get a room with a balcony. It is only a few dollars more, but well worth the money.

Can't praise this place enough. We had a front room with balcony overlooking the square. All it needed was a hammock and I could have lived out there! The square is endlessly fascinating - Nicaraguan life going by your eyes, so much more entertaining than any movie. The room was large and the bed was comfortable. Service was great and unobtrusive. Breakfast was delicious. The pool is small but very clean and private - a perfect retreat. The value is incredible.

Room Tip: I would definitely pay the little bit extra to get a balcony at the front overlooking the square. T...

The hotel is as awesome as it gets in Nicaragua -- (Mukul awesome) but for different reasons. The staff take the time to know you; they anticipate your needs before you know you need something; always a smile; a joke or some personal anecdote that makes you feel part of the family and not a guest. The hotel itself has steady and speedy internet, a pool, best breakfast in town, can't be better located across from El Parque Centrale and is affordable for all (unless you are looking for a hostel). Highly recommended

Room Tip: Go for on the 107-108-109 side for a quieter sleep (it is off the street and the park); and the firs...

Two lovely nights at the Plaza Colon with great Spanish colonial hacienda feel. Rooms are large and bathrooms and showers ample. Buffet breakfast at poolside in the rear courtyard was excellent. Staff very attentive. The hotel fronts on the Plaza Colon across from the main cathedral. We were there at the end of the 2014 International Poets Festival. Our room at the rest of the rear courtyard was quiet even with the music in the plaza and a wedding at the hotel next door. Enjoyed our stay and did not want to leave on the rainy morning when sitting with that extra cup of coffee and the newspaper would have been preferable to the drive to the airport!
