“Great rooms, great staff, great location”
Reviewed 4 April 2014

We spent the first two nights of a wonderful week in Nicaragua in this lovely hotel and city. They arranged for a driver to pick us up ($45) at the airport and it was a pleasant 50m ride to the hotel. The drive spoke perfect English and was very informed about the area. On arriving at the hotel the hotel the staff was welcoming and very efficient. The hotel is in a calm, tranquil place with a warm feeling. The snacks and drinks we had were all very good and well priced. The town of Granada and the square is spread out right in front of the hotel and made for great people watching. The horse and buggy rides are also right in front and they can be persistent but took no for an answer very well. Everyone we met in Granada was very kind and welcoming.

The room we had was down by the pool and was great, wonderful big bed, very comfortable high quality bedding and spotless.
I would recommend the hotel to any one staying in Granada. We went off to Hacienda Puerta Del Cielo Eco Spa, after our two days here and had a outstanding say there. I really must say that Nicaragua offers way more then you expect and I will be back!

Room Tip: I was told that the rooms facing the square could be noisy at night, our room 107 was quite and comf...

Stayed here for 3 nights with family and greatly enjoyed trip. The location can't be beat (right on the square) and the rooms were excellent. The rooms were well appointed, comfortable and we loved the large balcony facing the parque central. Courtyard and pool are pretty and surprisingly quiet, even though its in the middle of the city. Breakfast is excellent: The food is great and the service is also top notch.

We also appreciated Virginia's (Concierge/Guest Services) help in arranging a tour of the city (and isletas), going zip lining on Mombacho as well as arranging a tour of Masaya volcano and the some of the surrounding towns (the "Classico tour"). Our tour guide for the Classico was Carlos. Carlos also picked us up at MGA on our first night......highly recommend him.

I can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the square have a huge balcony that faces the park/cathedral. It is very cool and v...

This quaint hotel has the best location in town since it is located right on the central plaza. Despite its central location, its interior courtyards and rooms and quiet and comfortable. After a day of touring, it is nice to take a dip in the small but clean pool and retreat to the comfortable hotel rooms. Everything is very clean. The rooms come with a delicious big breakfast buffet.

Room Tip: my room was on the first floor, but it was still quiet.

We chose to splurge and stay at Plaza Colon for one night while we explored Granada and renewed our Costa Rica tourist visas. The room was good sized with powerful AC, a very comfortable king bed, and a large flat screen TV. The bathroom was huge and the hot water was almost instantaneous!

Since we were in and out we didn't get a chance to enjoy the pool, which was set in a lovely garden, but the free breakfast buffet was outstanding! Service was excellent, the staff were very friendly and always eager to help, and overall we had a great experience!

If possible, try to get a room with balcony views facing the Parque Central, our room had patio doors that looked promising, but they opened up onto a sad little enclosed area. Also slightly disappointing was the wireless, our connections kept going in and out and weren't particularly strong. And while the free welcome drinks were a nice touch, they were disgusting! Unless you like Tamarind juice...

Room Tip: Try to get a room with views facing the Parque Central.

The rooms were the nicest we stayed in all week and they were very clean when we arrived. The breakfast buffet was by far the best hotel breakfast I'd ever had. The food was had a variety typical breakfast items as well as the traditional Nicaraguan items. They made your eggs according to order right in front of you and delicious seasonal juices were served. The pool was beautiful and very refreshing. The front desk service extended far beyond the expected duties and their English was excellent. We travelled with a large group which can be overwhelming for most hotels but they accommodated us with grace. I highly recommend it to all kinds of groups. By far the best hotel in Granada.

This is an excellent hotel and well worth the extra money. It's centrally located, has a lovely small pool and a very tasty breakfast. It's the service here that really sets the hotel apart - friendly and helpful. They even offer a complimentary welcome drink which is a catatonic concoction of rum mixed with some acidic bitters.

The only minor complaint that we might have occurred at check in. We arrived at 1pm and were told that our room was not ready and that check-in was at 2. This was disappointing as we'd been travelling for almost 24 hours and were exhausted. She offered to check our bags, but I said we were too tired and we'd just sit by the pool. On the way, we passed our room and noticed the door was ajar; we found that the room was ready. I returned to notify the front desk; she ran to find someone else, who said we could occupy the room. I'm not sure if this was a communication problem or if the front desk was adhering to a stringent policy. If it's the latter, this should be relaxed.

This is a beautiful historic hotel in the centre of one of the most beautiful cities in the Americas.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review! I always make sure to deliver all positive feedback to our team -as well as constructive criticism-, and will do so with your kind comments.

I apologize for the miscommunication that happened with your check-in. Conny, the housekeeper that serviced your room, forgot to notify the Front Desk when she had finished cleaning it. She has just returned after a 3 month pregnancy leave, and is still getting her rhythm back. I have already noted to her, as well as the rest of our housekeeping team, that they should always follow the procedure, which is to notify the Front Desk as soon as the room is ready to be used. I will also address this matter with the front desk team to make sure they always double check with the housekeepers whenever we have an early arrival, which they usually do, I am very sorry they did not do it this time!

Even though our check-in is at 2PM, we are always happy to accommodate our guests and check them in before that hour if their room is ready to be occupied, as there is no logical reason for us not to do that.

I hope we have the pleasure of hosting you again should you ever visit our city in the future. Please, if you do, contact me at mcanton@hotelplazacolon.com so we can make up for this inconvenience next time!

Best regards,

Maria Isabel Canton
