“Colonial Nicaragua...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 March 2010

Hotel Plaza Colon is a an English-friendly colonial hotel with service and attention that is excellent but not excessive. Upon entering from the street, the hotel faces the central plaza of Granada, and lest you miss your cozy little neighborhood, the entrance is flanked by a wine bar on the right and an espresso bar on the left...la gente y los servicios son hermosas y del hotel al lago es una pequena viaje por taxi...the hotel sits a short distance from the lovely slumbering Mombacho (not extinct...those fumeroles are active and steaming!) and the markets of Masaya. The courtyard & pool are separated from the reception area, creating a sweet little spot to read and catch the sun within the hotel. A beautiful little hotel!

I feel I am echoing everyone else. I went to the PC because of the reviews on TA. They are right on.

The hotel is beautiful. We had the corner balcony room and spent many many hours just watching the square. You simply cannot be in a better location within the city. I am a very picky eater and the breakfasts included in the rate were very good. I was glad they served it late - I am on vacation, so I eat breakfast at 1030AM!

The staff are amazing - Oscar -arranged for our afternoon day boat trip on the lake - beautiful.

Its really is the ONLY place to stay in Granada.

great value. beautiful building in great location on the main square. great staff and very clean. A/C worked well. beds very comfortable. we stayed 10 nights and used Granada as a base for visiting other areas in Nica. this strategy worked well.
booked this hotel based on NYTimes travel article on Granada that included a favorable review. they were right on the mark-Granada is fantastic if you like culture, history and ambience. and the hotel is a very handsome refurbishment in an old building on the main square. breakfast is included.
apparently this is the first hotel attempt by the Nicaraguan business group that owns it. they have really done a great job.
there are many interesting buildings, culture spots, restaurants within a block or two

I stayed two nights at Plaza Colon with a small tour group of 8 people. We were all very pleased with our stay. Perfect location right on the main plaza across from the cathedral. The Enoteca wine bar and the coffee shop both adjacent to the hotel were good places to sit and enjoy the pace of the town. Huge rooms had free internet (both wired and wireless). No restaurant per se, but many eating places nearby. Included breakfast had limited selection but was adequate, served in the inner courtyard around the pool. The front desk staff and bellboys were fantastic - friendly, helpful, good English. Would definitely stay here again.

Located right on the town square, this hotel had it all - location, incredible staff and service, superb value. Only disappointment was the complimentary breakfast, but there is a cafe in the hotel which served good food, so overall not a big deal.
Would definitely stay here again.

My new husband and I stayed at the Plaza Colon for a week as part of our honeymoon, and we loved it. You couldn’t not beat its location – right on the main square. The bell boys were friendly and helpful (the receptionist staff less so). The room was amazing, from this site we knew to ask for a balcony room, and we did not regret it – it was wonderful sitting out there and watching the hustle and bustle. The swimming pool is beautiful, and most of the time no-one else used it.

Granada is a wonderful place to spend time, we were there a week and could have spent longer – there is the beach, the museums, the churches, La Isletas, nearby volcanoes, the market, and it is a wonderful place to sit and watch the world go by.

I agree about the previous comments about the showers, but it is a small negative point when there are so many other reasons to recommend it.

We were there over Christmas and it was a wonderful experience – the local celebrations as well as the fantastic concert the hotel put on for guests. I felt very grateful to be part of something so special.

Go to Granada, and stay at Plaza Colon – you won’t regret either decision!

As far as Granada's high-end hotels go, this is the best. Given the choice between the Plaza Colon and the Dario, the Plaza Colon is tops in most categories, particularly for the romantic quality of the hotel and its outstanding staff, such as the bell-boy, Nelson. A balcony room is a must. The balcony, shared or private, overlooking the square "makes" this hotel. The courtyard and pool are beautiful and the breakfasts are as good as one would expect from any 5 star hotel. And despite the power outages, which are frequent in Granada, this hotel is the first place in town to have its own back-up power running.

If there is room for improvement for the Plaza Colon, it begins with the lack of hot water in the showers regardless of time of day. The front desk should also be able to change large Cordoba notes into small bills and provide currency exchange services at the same rates as those provided by licensed exchange agents on the street (better than the banks or ATMs). It would also be helpful for the hotel to provide arriving guests with a guide to the better restaurants and bars in town and where to find the best local vendor foods such as vigaron, nacatamales and cosquillos. A hotel of this level shouldn't lack hot water or an active, rather than passive, concierge service.
