According to our horse-carriage tour guide Cathedral San Francisco is the oldest church in Nicaragua. It might possibly be the oldest in Central America, but I had a hard time dealing with those long numbers in Spanish. This structure as it stands today came to existence after several devastating fires. Apparently an evil American who became the president in Nicaragua for a short time burned it down once. I have not independently verified this information, but this is what I heard.
We did not go in, but the convent nearby has a museum and there is a small entrance fee.
