To stage the morbid Retro Charm is a good idea. But it was poorly implemented in my opinion. The restaurant and bar area, the mood is very good, with panoramic windows to Bad Gastein. Unfortunately, the seats are uncomfortable. The food is very good. Service quality volatile. The bathrooms are not retro but simply defective, no vanity, just a bowl and a cake stand, a shaky uncomfortable toilet seat, rather uncomfortable beds, manghalhaft gloomy lighting.

I stayed with my wife at The Regina for a couple of days in march 2013. The hotel is situated in Bad Gasteins lower area, with a great view of the Graukogel side of the Gastein valley, and the ski area is easily accessible by a bus that stops fairly close to the hotel. If you want you can deposit the skis at the lift and stroll down the hill to the hotel, passing a couple of water holes (apres ski - Silver Bullet) on the way. The hotel has a fairly good restaurant with either a set menu or a la carte. The food and service were ok but the ambiance was excellent. If you are looking for a nearby alternative, there is the Lutter & Wegner (a bit posh but regarded as probably the best in Bad Gastein) down the street or the Amici, which is a bit simple but decent italian restaurant. The rooms are old school (especially the bathroom), but with a few designed touches. We stayed in 106, which had a large terrace. Great breakfast but the could jack up the service a bit more.

Ok hotel, rooms are standard size for the alps, that is small. Beds are way too soft to sleep on after a long day on the slopes.
Breakfast starts strict at 8am which is too late if you want to catch the best morning runs, the lifts starts running at 8.30am.
The hotel restaurant is also at best ok, no culinary experiences to be expected but taste is fine.
Distance to the lifts isn’t far but it is all uphill so you’ll need to take a bus, should be noted!!
Positive is that the rooms are well decorated and spotlessly clean, the communal spa with two saunas etc is also very nice.

We stayed for 5 days as a party of nine at this hotel. The manager and the head barman were both excellent, and made us feel very welcome. One of our party broke a key in the lock of their room, so the manager broke the door down and had their things moved to an alternative room while we had dinner. The next day, the lock and door were replaced and our friends were offered the choice of retruning to their original room , or staying where they were.
Some reviews note that the hotel has been patched up in places, and this is true, but its a 3 star hotel, not 5 star, and nothing was dirty, or unsafe. I suspect the upgrading of the hotel is ongoing.

The spa area is nice - nicer than it looks in the pictures, and for a ski resort, it was good quality. There were fresh jugs of water on offer, and plenty of warm towels.

We ate out each night so cant comment on dinner, but breakfast was good - and they made coffees as you wanted them ( Cappucinno's etc. ) which was a nice touch.

Super friendly and charming hotel - a real gem! Retro-charme interior with great sense and love for detail. It's not perfect, but made us always feel at ease - especially in the beautiful and well-lit dining area. Best selection of magazines ever seen in a hotel.
Staff was friendly and always helpful.
We will definitely come again and again and...

We stayed on January 2012 for one week in the hotel. Pros: cleanliness, very friendly hotel staff, a warm place for snow boards (though a bit small) and snow board shoes had a room to hang them to dry, excellent food, very cozy atmosphere, free Sauna (steam and regular).
Cons: the long walk uphill if you want to go to Stubnerkogel (though a free ski buss stop wasn't very far down hill, and you could rent a place for your boards or skis from the Stubnerkogel). The room didn't have a lot of space for clothes (didn't bother us but someone might be irritated). We'll stay there again if we come again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The sophisticated, slightly fusty imperial and royal charm that pervades the air at the former imperial spa of Bad Gastein in Austria, ends abruptly as you cross the threshold of the Regina. Its youthful manager, Olaf Krohne, a Bad Gastein-enthusiast for many years, has awoken the hotel from what had been a seemingly eternal slumber. The design mixes furnishings reminiscent of the old Baroque with a spark or two of irony. Special Features: This hotel is perfectly suited to young and young-at-heart individualists with or without children. Dogs are welcome. It is the ideal base for winter sports. A wonderful base from which to experience the mountains, whether you enjoy walking or any other kind of mountain sport. ... more   less
