My wife and I had the great luck to visit the De Dolle Brouwery last Sunday while touring Belgium. The experience was without doubt the highlight of the trip. We have long been fans of the "Mad Brewer's" exceptional hand crafter beers and it was a real joy to be guided around this tiny, artisinal brewery by the brewer himself (than poured beers by his wife!!). The tour was lively with great information. The admission (I belive it was all of 9 euros for my wife and I) is capped by a beer. Can't recomend this enough. And if you can't make it to the brewery do seek out his beers, they're exceptional.

The brewery is one of the very few left which follows a completely artisanal produce. The tour is lively and educational, a beer sample is included at the end. Sunday tours are in English. Highly recommended

With a group of friends I took the train from Bruges on a Sunday afternoon to visit the 'Mad Brewers' at De Dolle. We were met by the brewers mother, a sprightly 95 year old, who gave us the most entertaining brewery tour we've had in a long time. She regaled us with some wonderful stories about the family's takeover of the brewery in 1980 and their passionate devotion to the production of top quality beers. Visit ends with a tasting and the chance to buy more in the company of local villagers. Tour starts every sunday at 2pm. Worth the 30 min walk from Diksmuide to Esen.

Humor and Beer are far from an impossible marriage. That was what I was thinking about, when following the tour in this family brewery. The brewery is rather small but the jokes were good and fired at a high rate by the guide. Besides of that, he gave a lot of relevant information about the brewery process. Their beer names also belong to the funniest I know, but I won't give away here their meanings ;-)
