Owner description: Marqueyssac is one of the most beautiful romantic gardens of France and today the most visited garden in Perigord. Listed as a national historical monument thanks to its 54 acres park, Marqueyssac's gardens offer more than 6 kilometres of shaded paths in a maze of 150 000 hand-pruned boxwoods. From the belvedere, at 130 meters above the Dordogne river, you will see the most spectacular panorama in Perigord. This is the testimony of a rich bygone history and a gorgeous natural heritage. It's also an exceptionnal Dordogne valley point of view, you will see its most beautiful villages : Domme, Castelnaud, Beynac, Fayrac, La Roque-Gageac and its castles.

“Beautful gardens - great views”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

The gardens reminded me of Versailles - very structured all green. There is no color other than the very manicure shrubs. The views on a clear day are breath taking.

“Nice views but no colour. Should be called box-land.”
Reviewed 27 June 2014

Nice views indeed, and the initial topiary is impressive, but after that it's box, box, box. Several km of box. A nice walk but for 8.50 euros a head, if you are not into box, it's a little dissapointing. It's the same price as the gardens of Versailles but not quite the same :-).

I was hoping for colour, ie flowers. Perhaps I should have researched more so I won't give it a bad score, but neither a great one.

“Breathtaking views of La Dordogne”
Reviewed 27 June 2014

The gardens are situated on top of a cliff overlooking the valley - parking takes you a good part of the way so not too much of a climb. The box sculptured hedging is quite amazing both for style and quantity, but for us the delight was in walking the kilometre or so along the top with remarkable views all around. It's shaped like a ship and at the "aft" you can turn and see Beynac, La Roque Gageac and Castlenaud la Chapelle pretty much at the same time. If you enjoy the valley then this is a great way to cement it in place in the memory bank.

“Slightly disappointing”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

This curious garden is marketed as being a paradise of box trees high above the Dordogne with an amazing restaurant and views. Its actually a mixed woodland and part structured garden, with one or two interesting viewpoints and a rather poor cafe. It's quite a nice pace for a walk on a hot day but not terribly interesting and the cafe is best avoided. It's an easy walk, you don;t need to take the buggy along the main path!

“Really worth visiting”
Reviewed 25 June 2014

This was a definite on our itinerary before we left the UK. The original gardens designed in the 17th century fell into disrepair until the 1990’s when it was renovated. It’s beautiful with its clipped boxwoods, shady avenues and fantastic vistas. Definitely worth a visit and fantastic value at 7.20 Euros.
