We thoroughly enjoyed this place. It was nice to hear and see so much history that happened in such a small area. None of us had heard about this place until we came across it while driving. It has been well maintained and is hard to believe that everything was in such good condition and you were able to tour the house as well. This was one of the highlights of our trip.

With great exhibits, restorations and informative 45 minute movie, the director, Major Marshall, and his staff have done an excellent job of portraying the VMI Keydets contribution to the battle at New Market. Don't miss the Field of Shoes...hear it might become a movie. Can't wait to attend the re-enactment of the battle.

Whenever I travel I like to see civil war battlefields. I've been to some of the best. New Market is one of those places that is not well-known but should be. The museum is very good and the movie informative. What impressed me was that the homestead/farm was intact and all the outbuildings were there and in place. It really gives you a sense of of 19th century Virginia farm. This is unique for most of the battlefields I've been to may have a house, a barn, a smoke house or a few of these but not upwards of 8 outbuildings. These buildings are not only in tact but in good shape. It was also nice to be able to go through them.

The battlefield is right off I-81, 5 minutes off the exit. Well worth the visit. Good 45 minute movie that explains the battle very well. The displays in the museum are just OK, nothing spectacular. But take the time to do the 1 mile or so battlefield walk. You walk right through the 'Field of Shoes' (explained in the movie) and up to the hill the Union troops were on. You get a great feel for the battle by doing the walk. And don't miss the scenic overlook on the way back down that is marked on the map. Great view of the Shenandoah river from way up high. Great hour or so break off I-81.
