The clerk at this desk told us this museum was better than the Civil War Museum down the road and we would have lots of surprises inside. We sure did! The museum starts with Greek and Roman exhibits and goes all the way to Desert Storm. It is very disorganized in it's exhibit timeline. There are also exhibits of toy guns, dolls and movie posters. The civil war parts of the exhibit were good, but it should advertise itself not as a museum of this particular Civil War battle but as a military museum period.

The museum itself contains hundreds of fascinating historical items and might be worth the entrance fee. The staff admitted upfront that this was not the Virginia Museum of the Civil War, but did not make it clear that it was a private collection. Be warned, only half of the collection is related to the Civil War; about 1/3 is old cap guns and the rest from other wars or Native American relics.

A number of things rubbed me the wrong way, not least of which was the borderline apologetic tone the museum has for the Confederacy. A few things added up to make me question the underlying beliefs of the collection's owner: (1) the overuse of the term "negro", (2) the focus on the negatives of Lincoln and the Federalist (which are admittedly whitewashed in school and many people believe misconceptions, but the tone went beyond correcting these misconceptions), (3) a display with a ranting letter about how the Rebel flag isn't racist (while complete ignoring its current use, which groups use it, and the whole slavery issue of the Civil War), (4) the large amount of Nazi paraphernalia, and (5) the Nazi paraphernalia for sale in the lobby. The Nazi stuff, though interesting, seemed superfluous at best. The accompanying text did not attempt to glorify the Nazis, but the large amount of items compared to other wars and the general lack of discussion of the evils of the Nazis was disconcerting. There was also an odd display of a Japanese man living in America who joined the Ally campaign in Italy whose mom gave him a pillow with the Nazi emblem on it...

In sum, the Nazi items (both on display and for sale), rant that the Rebel flag is not racist, and the general pro-Confederate tone makes me question the stance of the collection owner.

This museum contains too many exhibits that are connected neither to the Battle of New Market nor to the Civil War in general. If you're interested in seeing a hodge podge, go here, but if you're interested in the Battle of New Market bypass this place and proceed straight ahead on the same road to the New Market Battlefield State Historic Park where you'll find the Hall of Valor Civil War Museum.
