Le Cep en Sancerrois

We stayed one night recently in this remarkable chambre d'hote. Gisele and Philip Fromont were wonderful hosts, the rooms were spacious and tastefully decorated, the breakfast sumptuous. We only wish we could have stayed longer, as the Sancerre area is one of our favorite in France (as are its wines!). A thoroughly delightful experience.

I have mixed feelings about writing this review as I can't really decide how to rate it. I have gone for "Average" as it didn't really live up to my expectations (from photos and reviews) and was not up to the standard of the other two B&Bs that we stayed in on the same trip, both of which are worth a 5* rating in comparison.

Firstly some positives:
- The hosts are delightful people; very friendly, helpful and, as a bonus, multi-lingual.
- The table d'hote served in the garden was good value for money and we did have a very enjoyable evening.
- The location is right in the town and in easy walking distance of the main square
- The room itself was reasonably spacious and very clean

So why only 3*:
- "Strian's" review (posted after we had left the UK) describes the very odd approach to the rooms. What he doesn't say is that this approach is very dusty. To my mind it went beyond quirky to off-putting and I nearly made our excuses and left before we even reached the room!
- The only storage in the room consisted of a few coat hooks; there was a small coffee table but nothing in the way of a cupboard or drawers or dressing table. I am someone who always unpacks even for one night, but there was nowhere to unpack too.
- The bed was a bit too low for me (arthritic knees and hips), and the towels provided were rather small and thin.
- Whilst most French chambre d'hotes do not generally provide much in the way of toilettries, most of those that we have stayed in in recent years do at least provide some hand soap for the basin. It is only a small thing, but it is nice after a long journey to be able to go to the loo and wash your hands before having to unpack.
- Parking is a bit of a nightmare (there is not much they can do about this though :) )

Would I recommend this B&B to anyone? Well it would very much depend on the person:
- to my son & his girl friend - yes - the dusty approach wouldn't bother them and they tend to travel light
- to my parents/parents-in-law - no
- to a business associate - no - too risky
- to a friend - maybe, if they particularly wanted to stay in Sancerre, but with warnings and caveats

We stayed here for 3 nights on our way back to the UK after a family reunion in the landed region. We have stayed in Sancerre before and we love the area.
This is a very good B&B, and although there are a couple of things I will comment on later, we would still recommend it. Do go there, you will have made a good choice.
The rooms are all on the first and second floors above the ground floor used by the family. The entrance to the upper floors is unusual to say the least. You go through what looks and feels like a old second-hand bookshop (Phillipe says he is going to red them all when he retires!), up an old corkscrewing staircase, back along a hallway packed with ten years worth of children's toys on one side, and finally you are in the completely renovated B&B part of the house! The rooms are lovely with beautiful oak parquet flooring (laid by Phillipe himself). However the oak, scandinavian-style bed bases (again made by Phillipe) are only about 8 ins off the floor - so that the top of the mattress is barely 15 ins above ground level. This will be fine for most people - but uncomfortably low for anyone with knee, hip or back problems. For a B&B, it would have been better to make the beds a more conventional height. The only other comment is that in our room, there was absolutely no drawer, wardrobe or cupboard space - although this was not for want of space. Again not a problem for most people who will be staying for only a short time, but given the size of the room, I would have expected at least some clothes storage facility.
Phillipe and Giselle are charming hosts, and we did regret not booking in with them for dinner - it looked great.
This is a quirky B&B, but overall, there is much more to commend it than to criticise.
If you are staying in Sancerre for few days, do go to La Pomme d'Or restaurant. It is delightful. And if you want to experience a reasonably priced Michelin-star restaurant, try La Tour on the edge of the main square - but you will have to book. (I mean it is "reasonably priced" for a Michelin restaurant - it is not cheap)

I stayed in this wonderful B&B in August 2013. Wonderful people, wonderful location. I spent some time in the host family's company. We shared stories and experiences, over some lovely Sancerre of course!!
Highly recommended!

We stayed 3 nights at Le Cep en Sancerre and we definitely chose the right location and the right Bed and Breakfast. The rooms are very spacious and it even had a living room where our 23 month slept. The breakfast were delicious every morning in a beautiful wooden table with different types of bread and pastries, orange juice, fresh tea and coffee, muesli and yogurts. There is also a terrace/garden where our son played and they hosted wonderful "al fresco"dinners with the other guests. They are wonderful hosts and the dinners were exquisite from bbq, to apple tarts, cheeses, mousse au salmon...and wine to pair the meal at a very accessible price. Also we didn't even need to take our toys out as they had a hall full of toys for children of all ages. We are coming back!

Room Tip: All of the rooms are very spacious, clean and new.

We stayed here just for one night on our way back from the west coast on route to Disney!
Phillipe and Gisele were perfect hosts advising us where to go in Sancerre and arranging breakfast at the crack of dawn so we could leave early for Disney. Such a friendly couple, very entertaining sociable evenings with the other guests.
Sancerre is a beautiful place to stay and Le Cep is a perfect base to investigate it.

Phillipe and Giselle go above and beyond what is expected of B&B owners. Their place in Sancerre is in an incredible location, the room was beautiful if not a little rustic is places. Philippe sat down with us upon arrival and offered such amazingly helpful and on point recommendations for restaurants, domaines, sites, dairy farms and everything in between. If you are in Sancerre Le Cep is the way to go.
