“Stopovers prior to Ferry sailing”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

We have owned a house in France for 5 years and usually have a stopover the night prior to the ferry sailing. We have used Formule 1 hotels for nearly 30 years, initially because we would drive from Berkshire to Spain with 3 children, and would break the journey 2, 3 or 4 times. The kids loved the fact they had their own room next to ours, and sleeping 3, worked perfectly. This hotel is relatively new (we have probably stayed at 60 different Formule 1's over the years...including one in Liverpool). This is in a much quieter more pleasant area than most, with a couple of other hotels, and very near a hypermarket, a small collection of stores including a Majestic Wine store. Have stayed twice in the last month at this specific hotel, once during the weekend when France had a countrywide music festival. The hotel was full of kids, but was delightfully quiet after 10.30. It depends what you are looking for in a hotel. We find the standard is usually the same throughout France. Twice we have had problems with Formule 1s, but generally they are standard and do us fine for a quick overnight stop. They are always near a Buffalo Grill or similar for a pleasant meal. I was a bit put out this time as Formule 1 are cutting back on breakfast choices. Until recently there has been fruit compote and cereal, this last time there was non. I am not a great bread eater and not at breakfast...I asked for the compote and cereal and was told it was a cheap breakfast so they have cut the frills. Maybe after nearly 30 years its time to bring down the curtain on cheap hotels and actually find something more accommodating! For all that, its cheap and does what it says on the tin.

Room Tip: When staying at any Formule 1, always ask for a room at the back of the hotel and never on the groun...

We stayed at the Formule 1 hotel for two nights in total to split apart a very long drive from the North of England to the centre of France. On arrival (Providing you arrive before 9PM) we were greeted and given the code to our rooms. I must admit, being used to slightly more upmarket hotels I was shocked at this and not having a key card.

The room itself is basic, which consisted of a double bed and a signle bunk bed (ideal for a teenager!), TV, and washbasin.

The toilets and showers are separate from your rooms, but all seemed to be a very short walk (three or four rooms away at the most) from the room. They were clean, but the feeling of having to walk out and not having a hand wash for the toilets was disappointing. I'd suggest taking your own alcohol hand wash with you.

Also remember to take towels with you as the hand towels they provide will not suit for a shower.

The main plus is that this is outside of Calais and in a quiet area. There are a couple of decent restaurants nearby and the place is secure with a fenced parking area that is shut at night (you can enter and exit if you have your room code)

I know it was cheap, just a bed for a night in Calais but I would have expected towels, the room was unappealing, half the tv channels were unavailable, there were ants crawling over everything and the heater fell off the wall.

The toilets were not clean and perhaps it was as well that there were no towels as the showers didn't look too clean.

The breakfast was nice and as described and the chap in charge was very pleasant. Next time we will spend the extra 5 euros or so and get something better

An interesting collection of reviews on this place so far, so I thought I would add mine.

This is a Formule 1. It is the same as all the other Formule 1's in that is is cheap. When there is cheap accommodation, expect it to be used by people who haven't got much money or are working locally and don't want to spend their wages on posh hotels.

Yes, it smells sometimes. Yes the communal showers and toilets will get used by others and some of them are not going to leave it as meticulously clean as you would like. Yes, some people smoke it the rooms and sometimes it will be noisy. Some of the rooms are used by workmen who are working shifts and as one lot leave, their colleagues on the previous shift come back and take the rooms over. Its happening all over France in Formule 1's. Its what they are like.

Just like all the other Formule 1's and some Ibis Budget's this one is manned during the morning and again in the evening. Any other time of the day and it is self service. It keeps the running costs down. The locations of Formule 1's will always be "on the edge". You're not going to find them on prime real estate. Why would a business buy an expensive, desirable plot of land and then build a low budget hotel?

Formule 1's are a means to an end. Nothing more, nothing less.

This one is cleaner than most. It has secure free parking. Breakfast is a basic continental offering and is adequate. The showers are hot. The toilet has paper and flushes. One vending machine serves coffee and you can buy a cold drink or snacks in the other. If you want anything more than that, it would be better go up the road to the Ibis Budget, Ibis or Novotel and pay whatever you fancy.

For smells, you can open a window.
For noise, you can sleep with ear plugs.
For showers, you can either not have one or put something on your feet.
For a decent breakfast you can go to Auchen 300 yards away.
For an evening meal you can go to Buffalo Grill also 300 yards away.

I have also arrived here during the day when rooms, showers, toilets etc have just been cleaned and hardly anyone else is checked in. It does happen. For cheap, basic, roof over your head, bed and very basic facilities, it is absolutely spot on.

Finally, I have never paid more than the princely sum of £26 regardless of time of year and I don't stay more than one night at a time because I only use it for Chunnel convenience.

Room Tip: Pot luck but when you're riding a motorbike in the pouring rain and soaked to the skin any of th...

Good value for money for those who need time to wait for the Eurotunnel the next day, or for those who just cross it and will not go traveling in the same day. Standard breakfast for travelers. There are no restaurants or coffee shops nearby.

Stayed here for one night stop over on the way to disneyland paris. The rooms smelt of smoke and the motel was full of builders which made us feel a little wary of allowing the children to walk around the corridors on their own. I think next time I would pay a tiny bit more and have a room that was clean and had an en suite.
