“Surprising cafe with great food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 June 2013

We had lunch at this intriguing cafe on the port at Ars. The tomato mozzarella was better than I've ever tasted and came with a sorbet. Very efficient service in a pretty setting.

“Great restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 April 2013

This restaurant is right near the center of town across from the harbor. The service was good, the menu extensive, and the location charming.

“The kind of place that gives France a bad reputation”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 September 2012

What a dreadful place. The food that ranges from tex mex to "crepes" and the lengthy/ "international" menu already gives a hint of the quality of the food and the kind of mass produced dishes you are going to be served. The food is bad, supermarket fare. We even doubted that the crepes were truly freshly made. When they get that cardboard effect in a few minutes of arriving on the table, one has the right to be doubtful. The service was appalling and not even making a attempt at pretending to care. Our waiter got the order wrong, forgot a main dish and complained that the children were only ordering "crepes". Were we just unlucky? We spoke to a few people and got very much similar views. So yes, a few socialites like to have their "campari orange" to be seen there but that does not justify high price and very bad food?

“Beware: low-flying plates and glasses.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 August 2012

Any establishment can get people to try them once, and I suspect that the Cafe du Commerce know this. A great location in Ars-en-Re meant that on the August 2012 evening that we dropped in, it was heaving. We could only have a table inside, which is a quirky mix of history and general cosiness.

There were 4 of us, of which two ordered moules marinieres. As we waited for the order to be brought, the staff were rushing about, taking and delvering orders; they kept crossing over each other, and eventually the inevitable happened and a waiter managed to drop a dirty plate on a diner, leaving someone else's sauce down her back. Yuk!

Two of our meals were brought to us, leaving those who ordered moules mariniere to wait. After far too long, they were brought, with apologies. Regrettably, I don't think that what had been cooked was moules marinieres, as no cream or sauce was evident at all. However by this time we had lost interested in having a nice evening. During our remaining time there, another waiter rushing past the same couple who had a dirty plate dropped on them, dropped a heavy glass right next to their table, leaving shards and chunks of glass all around. This wouldn't happen if there were enough staff.

I wouldn't recommend the Cafe du Commerce, and I suspect the woman with the dry-cleaning bill wouldn't either.
