“Pleasant Surprise!”
Reviewed 16 July 2013

L'Albatros is a small, very clean hotel in a quiet location with a friendly, helpful and accommodating staff. Most of the staff speaks some or fluent English so we had no problem communicating. The hotel's restaurant was excellent. Our room was on the bay side. It was small but well laid out with good storage and a comfortable shower. There was no air conditioning. The hotel was strongly recommended by a friend. We stayed for four nights and had a very pleasant experience.

Room Tip: We'd recommend a room on the ground floor, bay side. There isn't an elevator, and the bay-s...

This small hotel is located on Ile D'Oleron in France. It is situated on the bay between the island and the mainland. There is no beach for swimming right there, but you can watch people digging for shell fish, and walk along the water on a pedestrian path to a small beach. You'll need water shoes for going in the water in that area. But you can rent bikes right at the hotel and bike a couple of miles to a much larger beach on the Atlantic.

The staff at the desk speak English and are very helpful. They learn to know you immediately and anticipate your needs. Rooms are clean, and the entire hotel is immaculate. The dining rooms are lovely, and outdoor dining is beautiful. Or you can just sit out on some of the comfortable furniture and read. Truly a heavenly place to vacation.

Room Tip: The hotel is small, but rooms in the front have a nice ocean view.

You couldn't expect a better sited hotel. At the end of a residential street, outside and away from the hustle and bustle of the town/village centre, in a pretty little garden, you suddenly discover this gem of a hotel, right on the sea.

Right on it - you do wonder at breakfast if the tide will come in right over your toes!

Mind you, the rooms are a tad small and the prices a tad steep - but high season on a lovely island, it is to be expected that you are paying le prix fort.

There are walks along the sandy shore and through the forest - a real delight.

Helpful staff - thank you very much!

We travelled by car across france and came across this hotel by chance. We hadnt booked but luckily for us they had one garden room left which suited us beautifully. We hopped out of the car and into the shower, which was in a large, very clean bathroom with lovely shower products Then down to the patio, which had the sea lapping on to it to enjoy several glasses of cold wine and beers. The owner spotted us reading the menu and came down with a translation book to help us out. The food that evening was excellent, fresh seafood and a cheeseboard bought to the table. After a comfortable nights sleep and a good breakfast we were on our way to yet another destination unknown, but with a little present of french lavender products as a gift from the owners tucked in the boot of the car. This was our first holiday away together and the memory of this little hotel will stay forever.

Room Tip: an ocean view would probably be better, but we enjoyed the privacy of the garden room.

L'Albatross is first and foremost a very good seaside restaurant -- with a small hotel attached. It is an interesting location to look out at the sea as the tides are huge and you go from waves lapping the sea wall to a long look across mud flats. The hotel is centered around a very large outdoor terrace -- and with people walking by that becomes the center of attention when the weather turns nice.

The food in the restaurant is outstanding -- they really prepare a lovely 3 course dinner -- take the option of eating at the hotel -- it is a good deal and it is THE best place in the area by far.

The hotel rooms are basic -- a little small but ultra clean and updated -- chose a room with an ocean view -- much the better choice. There is some noise from the upper floor if you are on the ground floor and some people noise from outside -- but nothing bad. The bathrooms are very good with nice showers and enough space for everything. Lots of closet space too. They claimed Wifi but it is a non secure free service -- spotty at best -- used celluar 3G instead.

The staff is outstanding -- it is a small place and you get to know everyone very quickly -- everyone is nice witha good sense of humor. Does help if you speak French (as I do) but you could manage without the French too.

The breakfast is generally included and is basic -- the coffee is very good and brought to you quickly -- very nice.

The hotel is the most fun during good weather -- you see lots and lots of people walking by and the terrace becomes a very active location for food and drink. A lot more fun on a nice weekend than a cold weekday -- for sure.
