Pierre & Vacances Residence Premium Le Palais des Gouverneurs
Reviewed 26 November 2012

We stayed in Palais des Governeurs three years ago and we fell in love with the Island, the accommodation was reasonable but not fantastic although we had a good outside area to relax in.

...This year we paid more for a larger appartment and it was literally 'a stinker' - every day we had to leave the windows open to get some fresh air into the apartment.

I still find it hard to be negative about the accommodation - things in its favour were scale and location with two children, it meant we could easily cycle to La Flotte or stroll into St Martin de Re but at the end of the day, we paid good money for what was really, mediocre accommodation which was a disappointment, especially as we paid a supplement for a 'refurbished' apartment. Thankfully we did though as we saw a neighbours room that was not 'refurbished' and it looked appalling.

If you are thinking about staying in France and location is not a challenge, go to P&V at Antibes - another run down swimming pool but you won't care as the location is magical.

Terrible value for money. We paided over £1000 for a week and found the accommodation cramped and uncomfortable, I do not understand how this can be rated 4 star ! Also the pool was alot smaller and more dated than it appeared on the web site. The location and island were very pretty but I advise you to stay somewhere else.

My husband and I booked a three-person studio apartment a few weeks ago at this complex, our first stay with Pierre et Vacances. We knew that it would have a sofa bed and kitchenette so were not expecting luxury, but for an advertised price of around 1000 euros a week we did expect more than we found - a tiny apartment which you reached down some tatty stairs from the ground floor, with no outdoor space (not made clear on the website, which only shows pictures of apartments with balconies or patios). It was so small even the "wardrobe" wasn't big enough to fit the hangers, so we lived out of our suitcase. The windows looked out onto a car park so you had the choice of either closing the windows at night (much too hot - very inefficient air con) or leaving them open and being repeatedly woken up by noise in the car park in the early morning. The shower was a mere drip, and when we complained to reception we were told a techincal man would see to it at 9 the next morning (apparently they were already aware of the problem - so why not tell us in advance?). We waited in until 11.30 then gave up. The issue was eventually fixed. On the plus side, the location is very good - five minute walk to the harbour - and the sofa bed could have been worse. The grounds are well-maintained, the apartment was clean and the hire bikes (once we eventually managed to find them - another farce) were good value.

Room Tip: Make sure you go for a bigger apartment with outdoor space!

We booked this hotel because we have a little baby so we thought Pierre et vacances would be ideal. First the great plus for this hotel is the location, really nearby the " vieux port" and the city.
From the first day we were not able to sleep in our room due to a penetrant smell. Next day we explained this matter to the reception and we were told that they would send a technician. When we came back from a trip in our room the smell was better but changed to a unhealty chemical smell. Back to the reception when we were told that they put a product in the " siffon " and they handed me over a spray in case the smell wont go over. I never experienced this in a 4 star Hotel. They admitted also that this problems occurs sometimes. Altough they knew we have a baby never was questioned the use of this products. The island itself is really beautifull and one of the most charming villages we ever visited. But we never consider again to book with Pierre et vacances and after reading somes comments on booking.com as well the smell problem was not only observed by us. This means that this problem is not caused by a siffon and last for several years. We can not understand why the french tourism government labeled this accomodation with a 4 star.

Perhaps we were lucky, but we have no real complaints. We were two families of 3 and 4 persons respectively. The smaller group had an open plan mezzanine type room with bed upstairs and sofa bed downstairs together with balcony, near the pool. Ours was in the older building near reception and had a living room with sofa bed, 2 bathrooms and a bedroom with further single-bedded section beyond a curtain, unneeded by us for sleeping purposes. Being on the ground floor we were also lucky to have a terrace with table & chairs for al fresco breakfasts etc. My advice with P & V and similar is always book the largest accommodation you can sensibly afford - it is worth it. Swimming pool and table tennis were a hit with the youngsters. The reception staff were friendly and helpful and the great thing is that it is central, so it is only a short walk down the hill to the fabulous harbour, either for breakfast supplies or dinner. No need to drive out anywhere (the bridge toll certainly deters trips to the mainland), once you have hired your cycles, which is a must. Therein lies our only mini-gripe. Seemingly unadvertised, the place has a discount arrangement with a local bike supplier. We had pre-booked bikes before arriving, but thought we would see what was on offer via P & V. Don't bother, unless you get there early - they didn't have what we wanted and the bikes looked second rate and tired. We reverted to our pre-booked shop - YOO TOO, which was excellent and they even gave us the same discount! I would throughly recommend booking with them online before you go. Be prepared for Ile de Re prices to be at the Parisian end of things to match many of the clientele at holiday times.

We reserved for 4-5 persons although we're only 2. Bonus: 2 bathrooms! Despite adverse comments, we found the apt pleasant and comfortable (No. 17 in main bldg). The view was of a stone wall and an empty lot, but it was quiet and we didn't spend a lot of time in the rooms, although we ate breakfasts, a couple of lunches, and a couple of dinners there. Access to the port and restaurants/petites commerces was a brief, pleasant walk. Staff was pleasant, professional, and accommodating, including helping me sort out a WiFi connectivity issue (WiFi in the reception area only). Secure parking lot, pleasant-looking indoor/outdoor pool. This is the 5th or 6th P&V/Maeva we've stayed in and we've always been pleasantly surprised as many posters seem to forcus on problems rather than positives.
Personal demographics: Both in our mid-60s, experienced travellers in Europe, our 3d (my 4th) trip to France in 12 months.

From the information on the internet the complex was rated at 4 star and sounded very comfortable and it was priced accordingly. First appearance on entry was a new and neat lounge with a 2 seater settee, a single lounge chair and a small kitchenette. We looked for the bedroom and as It turned out that this was the only room and the beds were fold out. We found these to be extremely uncomfortable and as we left opened, there was little space left in the room. At the start we had to sweep the tiled floor (no carpet) as this had not been cleaned properly.
There was no service as such and even toilet rolls were not provided. Rubbish removal was DIY. No hair dryer in the room. Everything was an extra ie phone connection 5 euro, additional towels 8 euro each, communal washing machines and dryers at commercial rates.
There was no airconditioning, fan or insect screens. As the weather was hot the room was hot and Mosquitoes were a problem at night.
Apart from the swimming pool there was little in the way of communal facilities. In this respect we were fortunate to have good weather and were not stuck inside. The gym was a single rowing machine and some rubber mats and the table tennis table was a concrete slab in the courytard. The were no international stations on the TV and it was WIFI only, no computer appeared to be available
We had booked for 6 days but left a day early as we could no longer toleratate the discomfort of the beds.

Many thanks for posting your review. We have read your comments with interest. It seems that you researched our residence prior to booking with us. Many of the points in your review, including the room layout, facilities in room including hair dryers, towels and other on-site facilities that incur additional charges are listed in detail on the website and therefore, customers can estimate how much additional budget they should bring to cover these items. We do feel that this information does need to be clearer so that this situation does not arise again. Wifi has been installed at the requests of our guests who tend to bring their own personal computers to the residence. We apologise for any negative aspect your stay sincerely and are sad to learn that you left a day early. Please take some consolation in the fact that we are determined to use your comments as part as an overall review of the residence and its services. Best wishes.
