“Excellent place to stay - Highly Recommended”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 September 2013

We are a couple, late 50s, North American's living 20 years in Europe; on this trip, we were accompanied by an elderly North American couple.

All of us enjoyed our stay at La Victorine b&b immensely.

Based on our personal priorities, we would share the following comments on La Victorine (LV) b&b:

Location:
LV is well-placed in the center of a circle bounded by Bonnieux, Roussillon, Goult & Lacoste – each of which are an easy 10 minute drive from LV. We found it an excellent location for touring the Luberon as well as accessing a good variety of local restaurants in the evening. We would choose this location over a center like Bonnieux with its congested streets, tourist activities & the like.

Cleanliness:
LV was immaculately clean throughout, including our rooms (we occupied the two ground floor bedrooms), the common areas in the house & around the garden. Our rooms were tidied each morning, which we would not normally expect with b&b accommodation.

Shower/bathroom:
The bedroom beside the stairs has a very spacious walk in shower, while the second bedroom has a wall-attached shower head over a bath tub. The water pressure, as well as the temperature & availability of hot water, was excellent in both bathrooms. Shelf space for toiletry bags, etc. was sufficient-to-good. One bathroom (the one with the walk-in shower) would benefit from hooks to hang clothing, etc, which were provided in the other bathroom.

Noise Level:
Both rooms were very quiet, even with the window/garden door open at night for ventilation. We could hear an occasional muffled sound from the adjacent room (our traveling companions) but nothing from the bedrooms occupied above us. LV bedrooms do not have tv's & we heard no sounds from the common areas just down the hallway from our bedrooms. Similarly, there was no traffic noise from the D road a few hundred meters to the south of the b&b.

Bed/bedroom:
The bedrooms were quite spacious (at a guess, 25sq m.) with very good, comfortable beds – firm but not hard. The beds are low, which was a little bit challenging for one member of our party who is less agile. There was more than ample access around both sides of the bed/beds, where bedside tables & reading lamps are provided. Both rooms had glass doors leading to vine-shaded, personal-use patios, through which the garden/pool area located to the rear of the b&b could be accessed directly.

Value for money:
Excellent value for money.

Wi-Fi:
Wi-Fi was good & consistently available in the common areas. Access was not available in our bedrooms due to the thickness of the walls.

Miscellaneous/Unexpected:
We found the LV to be tastefully designed throughout, with creative attention to detail. There are many attractive features in a décor which we would describe as Mediterranean with a modern twist. A large kitchen is provided for guest use, with a full-sized refrigerator in which we stored picnic supplies & ice packs. The kitchen is very well supplied & a family/group could easily prepare an evening meal here. The kitchen adjoins a large open plan sitting/dining room & then separately a comfortable tv room (French-only tv stations). Outside, we enjoyed an aperitif under the large shading trees in the LV's very agreeable & inviting garden, with it's views to the distant chateau in Lacoste. Next to the garden is a decent sized, modern & very clean pool, which appeared suitable for families. Breakfast was served outside in the walled inner courtyard, which is at the rear of the b&b, next to the garden. Breakfast was fresh, the traditional croissant & baguette, plus yogurt, fresh juice & delicious home-made jams. The coffee was excellent. Additional coffee & baguette was offered without our asking. Our hosts, Helene & Patrick, were personable & engaging, including with the members of our group who spoke no French. They willingly offered helpful advice on local markets, restaurants, the best sights & local specialities.

Restaurant recommendations:
We had excellent dinners at two moderately-priced brasseries in Bonnieux, the Un P'tit Coin du Cuisine, & Le St. Andre. At both restaurants we had delicious meals, friendly service & outside terrace dining.

Wheelchair access (not a consideration for our group but important for some friends):
The two bedrooms on the ground floor are wheelchair accessible. The doorways into the bedrooms & into the bathrooms might be a squeeze for a wheelchair but are manoeuvrable. The same applies to the toilets & the walk-in shower. The main floor common area (kitchen & sitting/dining room) is flat, with no steps. There is a step up to the tv room. Breakfast would be taken in the common area dining room as the outside garden terrace is made of loose gravel & is a step down from the main house. It might be possible to take breakfast in the garden area which is accessible from the car parking lot.

La Victorine is a very special place to stay and relax in the petit Luberon. The house and rooms are gorgeous - large, beautifully decorated, very cool and with lovely views of the surrounding country side and grape vines. The position is central to all the major sites in the area such as Bonnieux, Gordes, Roussillon and Abbaye de Senanque. But most importantly the hosts are very warm and friendly people who make you feel at home, encourage you to relax and give great advice regarding restaurants and sight seeing! And there's a pool to cool off in when you have finished exploring for the day. This is our second visit to La Victorine ( we are from Australia) and won't be our last!

We stayed here for two nights in mid May, introducing two first time visitors to the charms of Southern France and the Luberon. The location of La Victorine was superb for visits to all the nearby attractive sights and towns, great walks etc. The old place has been lovingly restored; the rooms are nicely decorated, large and comfortable and the breakfast was good.

The owners, Helene and Patrick were very engaging and friendly once they determined we were pretty gregarious ourselves; yet they were also discrete when that was appropriate. It is obvious the restoration and operation of La Victorine is a labor of love for the two of them.

The only potential negative for some people may be the totally rural location, and a car is a necessity. For us, however, the peace and quiet amongst the fields and vines was yet another positive.

We stayed in La Victorine for 5 nights in September and had a really lovely time there. Helene and Patrick were so helpful and kind to us, especially my 2 year old daughter. Our room was spacious and opened onto our own private terrace. The breakfast was delicious with homemade jams and the pool was delightful. The location is excellent for touring the Luberon, and Helene had great suggestions for villages off the beaten track to visit. Overall can't recommend La Victorine highly enough!

Our 3-night stay at La Victorine could not have been more pleasant. The rooms were spacious, comfortable and stayed nice and cool in the late spring heat. The hotel -- a beautifully converted barn -- is lovely and the grounds are perfect for relaxing, either by the pool or in the shade on the patio. The breakfast consisted of bread, croissants, local honey, home-made jam, yogurt, and even freshly picked strawberries from the garden. What won us over more than anything else, though, were the hosts, Patrick and Helene. They are extremely generous with their time, their knowledge of the area, even with their rose wine. They were interested in getting to know us, but they also knew when we wanted to be on our own. It was truly like staying with friends, but without any of the potential complications. The only tip I will give is to arrive during the day, as it is a little difficult to find and the roads are not well lit. We highly recommend La Victorine!

We were lucky enough to stumble upon this delightful Chambre d'hotes in a desperate late afternoon search for accomodation while driving towards Bonnieux. We knew we wanted to stay in the Luberon, and the photos looked gorgeous ....

Initially we were were a little concerned that it was not located in Bonnieux itself, but very quickly came to realise that its position, less than 5 minutes drive from the Village was one of its many advantages. (and about 5 minutes from Apt, Roussillon and many others)

To put it simply, there is something very special about La Victorine.
We came for one night, at the end of our 6 week 'European Vacation', and ended up staying for 3 nights (next time we will stay for a week!).

Patrick and Helene are delightful hosts - very welcoming and very friendly - and have the very unique knack of making all their guests welcome and encouraging conversation between the guests, but still allowing you privacy and time to enjoy the tranquility of the beautiful courtyard and pool area.

Our room on the first floor was spacious (as a family of 2 adults of a 11 year old daughter it was the biggest room we had enjoyed in 6 weeks) and the separate modern bathroom was almost a room of its own!

Breakfast each morning was a real treat, fresh bread, croissants, a selection of homemade jams, and homemade fruit compote each morning to accompany the yoghurt. One morning Helene even made the most delicious pear clafoutis from the pears that had fallen from the trees in the garden overnight.

Again, Patrick and Helene are wonderful hosts, and are a great source of inspiration for the many different ways to spend your days in the Luberon, and full of suggestions for lovely dinners in nearby restaurants - most of our highlights in the Luberon were from their recommendations ...

If you are planning on a longer stay at La Victorine - one of the unique advantages is a beautiful lounge and dining room with a spectacular outlook over the vines, and a full kitchen solely for the use of the guests ... this is something we have not come across in our many stays in Chambre D'hotes in France. You can chose to 'eat in' and feel totally at home in this wonderful place, or enjoy a pre-dinner drink before heading out to one of the many fantastic restarants located minutes away.

Our daughter loved it (and Patrick & Helene) so much she really did not want to leave.

We cannot recommend this wonderful place highly enough - superbly located, wonderful warm hosts, and simply the best way to approach any stay in the Luberon ....
