“Finally a spacious, modern top quality hotel in Meribel.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 May 2010

We have been going to Meribel for many years for it's wonderful mix of fantastic skiing and scenery and its charming village atmosphere and architecture. But one thing has always been missing: a top quality, spacious, modern hotel with great interior design. Previously we had the choice between staying at Le Grand Coeur or renting a chalet.

Le Grand Coeur has wonderful service and a great location, but the rooms are small and old fashioned and the views from most of the rooms are average. And reservations during holiday periods are something that seem to be handed down from generation to generation! (You need to go every year at the risk of losing your place in the queue!) Their are some amazing catered chalet rentals in Meribel but it isn't always easy to line up logistics with friends and family to rent an entire chalet (sharing with strangers doesn't really appeal to us) and well sometimes you just want the hotel experience.

And so we were quite excited when we heard about L'Helios. The location is amazing - absolutely perfect: within walking (or sledding!) distance of the town centre and ski-in/ski-out right at the heart of the resort. And the rooms are wonderful - spacious, flexible (we asked and were allowed to visit some of the larger multi-room/connecting suites - with beautiful interior design that would not be out of place in a boutique hotel in London or New York but adapted to the alpine setting. As far as we could tell every room has a stunning view of the valley and it was magical to gaze up the valley at the lights of Mottaret and the moonlit Mont Vallon in the evening on our balcony after dinner. The larger suites would be ideal for a family (even a large one) and would be like having a chalet experience but in an hotel.

This is the hotel's first season and this showed through from time to time, some details were missing and the service wasn't always as seamless as one would perhaps expect from a hotel of this size and standing. However, this was always acknowledged in a friendly and courteous manner and the owners and staff always did their best to smooth over any of these minor hiccups. Clearly these will have to be corrected and improved upon, but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and expect they will be loyal to their early customers when the time inevitably comes in a year or two when their 18 rooms are booked up solid on a quasi-permanent basis.

We stayed for 2 nights in a standard room at this little gem of a hotel. The rooms are beautifully designed and high end materials are used throughout: the towels and sheets are luxury quality, bathrooms are tiled with slate and the decor is elegant. The views of the valley of Meribel are gorgeous (we had a view from the bed). The owners went out of their way to makes us comfortable, including offering a complimentary massage and spa (also very nicely designed) session as a welcome gift. The clincher for this hotel is the fact that you have ski rental in house run by an extremely helpful and knowledgeable man who puts your skis out into the snow so all you need to do is stroll down, step on and go (ski in - ski out) Highly recommended!

-After accepting to pay € 900.-for the room (they call it a suite, but it is a rather spacious double room . We had a very good view on the village and the valley with a nice balcony) , I asked the reception to buy for us the ski passes. They told me that they could not yet organize this as they were a new hotel (Hotels which are half of this rate arrange ski passes without any question).
- As this is a new and small hotel with just 18 rooms the receptionist is at the same time the telephone operator, thus more often than not I was kept waiting on the phone for 1-2 minutes or more before they could reply.
-One can see in some parts of the hotel stll the chips and shives from the contruction ,ie you cannot compare the cleanliness to another establlishment of such a high price!
-There were no kleenex boxes, neither water bottles in the room (standard practice in any hotel which pretends to be one of the most luxurious hotels of the region)
-We could control with the remote control only 6 french TV stations of which one was Canal + and coded,ie not open for viewing. We were informed only when checking out that they had indeed another 15 channels via satellite, but one had to press some other bottons at the remote control . There was not TV-guide/instructions anywhere which explained this!
-The rooms did not have "do not disturb" signs and one late afternoon our room was opened announced just when I was coming out of the shower. When we complained about this fact we were told that they were soryy , but had not yet received those signs!
-When I ordered a drink at the bar, it came withut any chips/nuts,etc. They had not yet time or think about ordering such hors d'oeuvres for the bar.
-When I wanted to use their steam room(around 6 pm) after my massage, I found out that it was cold and dark(no lights to be seen anywhere),ie not ready to be used after a long day of skiing.
-In order to pass to the swimming pool/steam room area one has to walk throough ice-cold water!!

A hotel which is lacking so many of standard "luxury" hotel amenities cannot ask € 900.-/night for a double room, the highest rate of any hotel for a similar room in Meribel!
When I complained about all of above, the management told me that they would make a " commercial gesture" whih turned out to be that they cancelled 3 nights '(which we stayed) parking of our car in their closed garage for which they have the cheek to charfe another € 20.-/night!!! This really was insult upon injury!
