Going during the first season to any hotel can give cause for apprehension. However, if there had been any gremlins, they had certainly gone when I was there from 19th March 2013, towards the end of the first season.
This is a top class hotel - very central, being on the main street in Meribel (but with perfect sound insulation for the rooms). La Kaila would certainly be my choice for Meribel next year.
The photos on the website are a fair reflection of the place: very warm and cosy – lots of wood, subdued lighting and thick carpets everywhere –exactly as one would want a ski hotel to be. The bar area with its log fire was a great place to relax after dinner – sometimes with live guitar music-being very comfortable and sophisticated.
The restaurant was delightful with a top class team with an admirable combination of professionalism and friendliness. I was really made to feel that I was appreciated rather than being regarded as a necessary evil, as one can get in some French hotels: quite the opposite, everybody here bent over backwards to be helpful. There was an excellent hot buffet in the morning and the cheeseboard at the end of the main course in the evening made me overindulge!
The ski room looked after the guests well and had everything ready for them. The hotel also has immediate access to the slopes for ski in and out.
Little touches like the canapés with the turn-down in the evening and the hot water bottles were nice extras. I would think that the higher rooms (I was on floor 2, room 23) would have a better views but on the other hand the pool is also on level 2 so this a hard choice. (Incidentally the picture of the pool’s jacuzzi area on the website – picture 1 of 9 – probably does not do it justice. It was really good to be battered by a whole variety of jets after a day on the slopes. I also spent too much in the Nuxe Spa downstairs but then it was as good as the rest of the hotel. I had no problem booking 24 hours in advance.
I went to this hotel wondering whether I had come too soon and left thinking that I wanted to put a rare review on Tripadvisor. This is a very cosy, elegant and sophisticated place.
