This is a revue on the bar/restaurant not the hotel , but if the lack of service in either the bar ( day and night ) is to go by then the hotel can not be much better .
We booked for what was meant to be a special celebration dinner for 12 adults . The bar staff downstairs were just hopeless , it took 15 minutes for just 4 beers to arrive and as soon as we started to order drinks for the rest of the group they went into meltdown . The ladies in the group chose 3 x different bottles of white wine , none of which they had in stock , before they settled on one that was available . This turned out to be luke warm ......not out of the chiller cabinet .
Assuming it was just the downstairs staff that could not cope we went up to the restaurant , things did not improve . We were lucky to be given comfortable chairs but beware in the middle of the dining room are 2 x long bench tables and the benches have no cushions at all and judging by the fidgeting of those sitting on them they were not at all comfortable .
So the saga of ordering more wine continued , the blokes opted for red , and again we found our 1st 3 x choices were not available , we then found a decent bottle and once that had been drunk asked for a 2nd , that was no longer available . The woman had all but given up on finding a nice chilled cold dry white wine . Is it too much to ask that a supposed 4/5 star restaurant has at least some of the wine that is on their wine list .
The staff whilst trying to be helpful were hapless . They leant across people , forgot to bring dishes , could not answer some questions about the dishes we chose , clearly not trained to the level of a top restaurant.
When we quizzed the restaurant manager why he had so few wines , he explained his manager was trying to run down stocks , to his credit he did bring a free bottle of red wine to the table which was nice and he did not charge for the lukewarm wine , so he tried his best .
If the wine experience was not good the food was a disaster , starters were all OK nothing to make note of really , but the main course was just cold . We had opted for the fillet of beef and vegetables , the chef put on a grand show of carving the meat “ a table “ little did we expect the vegetables to be straight forward broccoli and jacket potato , even then how difficult can it be to bring out broccoli and for it to be warm , the jacket potatoes although wrapped in foil ( which you would have thought would keep it warm ) could not even melt the butter that was put on them .The meat was fantastic , but when you are paying £50 a head for a meal you do not expect the meat to be the only tasty part of the evening .
The evening was a total disaster from a food and wine perspective , they even lost my wife’s scarf from the cloakroom and instead of trying to apologise or find it just shrugged their shoulders .
During the day , getting coffee in the downstairs bar was just as bad , with a simple round of 5 coffees taking forever and 2 were bought out 8 minutes before the remaining 3 .
Although the decor and location would suggest this was a real luxurious place , and from the outside it looks great , carry on walking , the service was appalling and my advice is to stay clear and find somewhere else to eat/drink .
