“Cool, fun place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2012

We usually go on the weekends for some drinks and to hear some live music. They've got a little stage area up front and usually have good bands playing, or karaoke. It's a pretty cool spot at night, though it can get pretty loud, so either go during the day or sit toward the back if you're not into that. They have great appetizers and drinks, and the service has always been good. Would recommend this place.

“Some Great Food Bargains, Often Slow Service, Fun Atmosphere”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 September 2011

Perhaps once a month I visit. There are great lunch specials that are tasty. Service is spotty with slow service whenever we had more than four eating together. Wait staff seemed friendly and competent. Selection was good.

“Fresh Fish and asparagus cooked perfectly - excellent meal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 June 2011

This restaurant is a bit hard to find but so worth the search. In a small office building on corner of Jefferson and Thimble Shoals facing the Mexican restaurant that fronts Thimble Shoals. ANYWAYS, we went because my mother and I both have the entertainment book and Newport News is about 1/2 way between our homes. Nevertheless, our dinners were 12.99 each and worth every bit. The guys order the tuna steaks (roughly 8 ounces each) which were perfectly cooked and served with a wasabi/cucumber ranch sauce on the side. My mother and I both ordered the grilled salmon which was also generously portioned and tasty - no bones, no skin. Included in the cost were two sides or a side and a salad for an extra 79 cents. We all ordered streamed asparagus - each of us probably got a fist full and it was cooked al dente - what a treat! Caesar salads were fresh with romaine lettuce, lots of fresh shredded parm and dripping in a delicious dressing (might want to ask for that on the side or less on the salad). Garden salad was nixed b/c we don't like "genuine" iceberg lettuce but it sounded like it had lots of veggies inc. radishes. Garlic mashed potatoes were good, not great and not piping hot. The large "breadstick" that came with each meal complemented the meal - but you'll have to ask for butter. The atmosphere is more of a bar/pub than fine dining so one might miss the delicious entrees thinking it's just a deli. Menu is extensive and everything from the Reuben ($8.99) to the Saturday night special, prime rib ($16.99) sounded yummy. There is outdoor dining shielded by umbrellas and two walls but it looked as though it was the smokers who braved the heat. Band was setting up for a 10PM show with a $5.00 cover. Would go back if I'm in that area of Newport News - and hope this restaurant comes down to the Norfolk area.

“Sandwich shop by day, local band bar by night.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2010

Manhattan's is a deli-style restaraunt that converts into a local hangout/bar at night with regional bands. For the food portion it has some great sandwiches and wraps but is fairly basic in its selection. You get a good lunch for a fair value. If you're looking for a small local bar where the music is right in your face then come after happy hour.

“Hate drunk driving? Don't come here!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 September 2009

I grew up in NN and was there Saturday night for a bridal shower and bachelorette party. Saturday night, we got nicely dressed and went out for a night on the town. Our party of 4 adult women arrived at Manhattan's around midnight, and were not allowed in because....get this....we arrived in a cab! Apparently, Hampton Roads has gotten so ghetto, that arriving to a bar in a cab means you're too intoxicated to go inside. When we asked to speak with a manager, the bouncer wouldn't even hear it. When I was able to speak with a manager by calling on my cell phone, she was rude, argumentative, and accusatory.

I have had my share of big nights out, and Saturday was not one of them. This was about as tame a bachelorette party as one could have, and we were shocked we weren't let in, especially since we saw about 5 other people on the patio who were far more intoxicated then we were accused of being.

Lesson: avoid Manhattan's if you're safety conscious and an adult. We've promised my friend a re-do party to make it up to her, in DC where taking a cab is considered intelligent, the bars are better, and adult women are welcome.
