“Great European cuisine in Newport News”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 November 2012

99 Main, in Newport News, is my favorite restaurant in the Hampton Roads, Virginia, area. It is a non-assuming smallish bistro style place with understated elegance just off Warwick Blvd. The emphasis is French and always great. They have an oyster appetizer ("99 style") that will knock your socks off, a superb shank of veal and a wonderful beef tenderloin with a choice of sauces. The service is excellent and the staff is very knowledgable about both their dishes and their wines. The price is moderately expensive, but I have eaten in more expensive places with less class and worse food. It is a place to take your best gal or guy for a wonderful evening.

“Good local dining”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 September 2012

There are two good restuarants in Newport News and this is one of them. It has a bistro style with a continental focus. Good wine choices.

“Sunday nIght dinner”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 September 2012 via mobile

Found 99 Main while looking for a place to have a last dinner with son who is attending local university. Our table had ceasar salad, two fish entrea (tuna and salmon) as well as the veal scallopinni which was the evening special. The ceasar salad was great, coming with freah fremch baguette croutons. At our waitress' suggestion, we ordered the fish with all 3 sauce selections on the side. This was great becaise if I had needed to choose, I would not have ordered my preferred red pepper chutney sauce. Maybe it the fact that it was labor day weekend & the place was 'dead', but the veal was a bit rubbery which was a disappointment.

“Great food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2012

Awesome food. The service was a touch slow but the food made up for it. This restaurant is a little on the costly side if you are dining with your family. Dinners run around $23 each, salads are separate. The eggplant spinach salad was awesome. The bring in fresh fish daily. The roasted chicken breast was excellent. My teenager at it all and he is fussy. This place would be awesome for a date night. They also have a full range of wines an whiskeys- I am not a drinker but there were pages listed of alcohol. We thoroughly enjoyed all the food.

“Yummy!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 July 2012

This past weekend I visited 99 Main, taking several family members that were in town. I ordered the Osso Bucco and others ordered the Steak and Whole Baked Fish. All of the entrees were fabulous! My Veal was done perfectly and they even gave me a small fork for the marrow, which was appreciated. The sauce was thick and flavorful and the meat just fell off the bone. The steaks were ordered rare and the chef didn't disappoint. This is possibly the only restaurant in the 7 Cities that I have visited that understands and is able to execute a Rare steak. It was perfectly seared, cold in the center, and the rub on the outside was absolutely delicious. The portions exceeded my expectations and the plating was traditional but with a modern twist and appetizing. I will be bringing friends and family back to 99 Main.
