“The Grace of Hotel Grotta”

Anyone reading this review will also look at the other highly positive comments, so I will add another perspective when considering Hotel Grotta as a place to stay in Naxos. I came for four nights and ended up staying nine for the simple reason that this hotel (thanks to Nicoletta, Dimitris, and their staff) knows what travelers need. I chose the word "grace" for my title because it evokes "a way of moving that is smooth and attractive and that is not stiff or awkward." The staff and hotel function flawlessly, with rooms that are clean, well-designed, comfortable and quiet. Breakfasts are amazing, including home-made bread, quiches, cakes, and of course Greek yogurt, fruit and so on. Those qualities are the basics. What elevates Hotel Grotta in my mind is another meaning of the word "grace," which has a spiritual quality. Guests at the hotel have the chance to fully engage the beauty, history, and cultures of Naxos from their room's balcony or a short walk along the shoreline to town. The view (facing west and north primarily) from the hotel is sublime, with the old town of Hora to the left, a 5th century BC doorway to a temple to Apollo to the right, and the Aegean Sea to the far right. The location is about 400 meters from the port up a slight hill that drops off to the sea below. One can sleep with balcony doors open and hear little but the sound of the waves, passing breezes, an occasional ship tooting its horn, and that's about it. The combined effect of the hotel's setting, services, staff, and Nicoletta's endearing enthusiasm for helping everyone enjoy Naxos is to provide its guests with inspiration, rest, and a rejuvenation of body and soul. Hotel Grotta is without doubt among the top three hotels I stayed at during a six month sojourn through Japan, Indonesia, India, Nepal, Turkey and Greece. Why anyone would opt for accommodations in Naxos that are in densely touristed areas with compromised views is beyond my understanding. As one young visitor wrote in the book for comments at the front desk, "Hotel Grotta rocks!"

My husband and I have traveled to most of the islands in Greece and have stayed in various price ranges of hotels but this little gem in Naxos is one of the best we have ever found. They met us at the ferry, offered wine and a snack while showing us a album of beautiful sights to see while in Naxos. The hotel was spotless and beautifully decorated. Our room was very spacious. The hosts make you feel so at home but if you need another reason to make this your stop while in Greece, it's the breakfast. You have to see to believe!

My wife and I made our second visit to Naxos island in early March 2014, and we stayed for the second time at the Hotel Grotta, located in a quiet neighborhood a few minutes' walk from the harbor front, eating establishments, and shops. We returned to the Grotta because our first experience there, in March 2007, was so enjoyable that we really didn't consider any other place. Our most recent stay there was so wonderful that we an scarcely wait for our next opportunity to visit Naxos and stay there again. The Grotta is a family-owned, family-run establishment with exceptionally clean rooms that are furnished comfortably and tastefully, most of which have a sea view and a terrace or balcony. The private baths, too, are spotless. The rooms, however, are not the best part of staying at the Grotta. Our hosts, Nikoletta and Dimitris Liana, are the daughter and son of the original builders and owners, Kyrios and Kyria Liana, whom we met in 2007. As was the case with their parents, so are Nikoletta and Dimitris warm, welcoming, and helpful as hosts. We were picked up at the port (at no extra cost) and made to feel as members of the family, welcomed upon our arrival by Nikoletta and her offer of a beverage (we chose freshly squeezed orange juice). We enjoyed this in the lovely breakfast room, which has spectacular views north to Mykonos, Delos, and Syros, and west to Naxos town (Chora) and Paros, a few miles across a strait. In addition to their hospitality, the family Lianos provides information concerning island exploration by car and foot, and can make arrangements for car rental and for excursions to other islands (in season, of course). They also give guidance regarding local dining possibilities, cultural events, and the island as a whole. A stay at the Hotel Grotta is really an all-inclusive, one-stop experience that provides a wonderful foundation for a visit to Naxos--a beautiful, diverse island well worth the time to explore. I cannot say enough about how much staying there added to our most recent exploration of that beautiful place.

A wonderful find! Welcomed by Nicolette as part of the family - the absolutely scrumptious breakfasts, enough variety and more than generous! - the hospitality and room was amazing - the hot tub welcome at the end of the day - the location perfect - walk to shops, restaurants, waterfront, and great advise on what to see and where to go. Stayed longer than we planned!

Enjoyed painting the view of the sea, the Gate of Apollo and another island in the distance. Also an easy walk to Naxos town center to stroll through the ancient winding streets or walk along the harbor lined with restaurants. The breakfast room has painted decorations on the ceiling, curtains billowing with the breeze from open doors and a terrace to enjoy at any time of day. A bar lines one wall of the same room. We stayed in a room on a courtyard which had lounge chairs to read or sun in and a small recessed pool where you could swim or cool off if you didn't want to take the longer ride to the beach. Breakfast good. My only complaint--the shower in our room had a low lip that seemed to direct water all over the bathroom floor no matter what we did.

Located in a commanding position overlooking Naxos city, Hotel Grotta is ideally situated a short walk from the bustle of the town, on a hill that overlooks the sea and the famous Gate of Apollo. It was great to be picked up from the ferry and we were welcomed with a drink on the terrace.
It is an easy walk down the rough path into town, but returning be aware that the last 50 metres is steep and it is dark at night, you might need a torch. You can also walk around the long way up the road which is not that much further and a little kinder to your feet.
The hotel itself is comfortable and friendly with obliging staff and a "family feel". Bright and cheery Nicoletta always found time to talk and give advice on places to go. Rooms with a balcony are great, the view is amazing, especially the sunsets - we started marking them out of 10!
The small indoor pool and spa was refreshing at the end of a hot day.
The breakfast buffet provided so many choices of homemade specialties it was hard to choose but everyday there was something else special to try. The rice puddings were delicious!
There are many hotels in Naxos town itself but Grotta is in such a good position we were glad to be a little out of town.
We visited in late September 2013 when the season was winding down a little and many shops were closing at the end of the season but it was also a good time to pick up summer bargains.
We would stay there again. Well recommended.

Room Tip: Balcony rooms have a magnificent view.

Came to Naxos and Hotel Grotta for originaly 7 nights and stayed 10. Just loved it! Family run and fabulously friendly from the free transfer from the port to the breakfast (mostly home made), to the drinks served at the bar, to information about private guide to great restaurants/tavernas to eat local food. My room with balcony faced the track leading to the old city and the ocean. I was given a kettle, cup and teabags for my afternoon cuppa. The room is equiped with hairdryer, TV, refridgerator and clean towels everyday. The Hotel Grotta ought to have 6 stars....dont stay anywhere else....I'll be back.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with ocean view...just wonderful.
